I see few people considering them truly high quality or influential as games; what followed in their footsteps? Really, they kind of remind me of 2048; other people did and could do what they're doing better, but no one will actually pay upfront for a similar game when a decent enough one is free. Here are the 2010s games in the top 100: God, I only just now decided to look this over and realized, wow, the only FPS on this list is Overwatch. Which is kinda surreal, considering 7 of the all-time top 30 are FPS games, including the top 2 of the 2000s. I'm hoping this means the concept of Open World will eventually stop losing its overwhelming influence; at least most of these FPS games take less than 10 hours to beat. It's exhausting having so many games take several dozen hours when so much of that time feels substance-less. That's why I don't really get The Witcher III. It feels like Red Dead Redemption with fantasy and dragged out to a hundred hours. | CasanovaZelos 10/12/18 11:23:00 AM #48 | RDR is in this weird position for me where I feel like I didn't adore it as much in the process of playing it, but I think about it in retrospect a lot more than a lot of other, similar games? It probably is just what I said above, by the time I played RDR, no matter how great it was, I had the same type of experience many times before. So even if I can recognize it as one of the best open world games, that doesn't hit me as hard as something like Dark Souls which feels entirely fresh. Same thing with FPS games when I look through that list for the 2000s. Here's the list: http://playthatgame.co.uk/?action=mainlist Here are the 2010s games in the top 100: 1. Mass Effect 2 (#15 all-time) 2. Red Dead Redemption (#20) 3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (#21) 4. The Last of Us (#25) 5. Portal 2 (#28) 6. Minecraft (#31) 7. Grand Theft Auto V (#35) 8. The Witcher 3 (#47) 9. Dark Souls (#50) 10. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (#64) 11. Journey (#66) 12. The Walking Dead (#75) 13. Batman: Arkham City (#82) 14. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (#88) 15. Overwatch (#97) I think all 15 of these are worthy to varying levels, though I'd probably skip over the ones that are obviously revisiting old formulas when discussing the one 'big' game. (And Minecraft is in this weird zone of really being from 2009 but officially released in 2011 or something...) To me, the ones that have left the biggest impact (as far as influencing future game design) seem to be Dark Souls and The Walking Dead, perhaps Journey. But I think the latter two are key examples of having more impact than truly being great games in themselves, as I'd easily argue that they have been outdone by their followers (Life is Strange and Edith Finch, for example). So, for me, the answer is likely Dark Souls. While it's following Demon's Souls' formula, it did it to greater success and wider discussion. To be an era-defining work, something has to be both boundary-pushing and at the top of its field, and I think Dark Souls is the clearest example. Ended up playing through the first three Quakes and then moved on to Doom II and 3. It's weird how misplaced Doom 3 seems in the series. It seems to be doing a fair job at what it's going for, but later games did it much better and it simply doesn't have any of the charm from those earlier games. I thought that was simply a sign of how FPS games had changed with time, but now I'm on Doom 2016 and it's freaking majestic. But yeah; this was not a series I had expected to age well, and I was pleasantly surprised.
