As a major Sonic fan myself, I'm not expecting much from the Sonic franchise, even with Mania. FFIX has been ported a couple of times, so I think Zidane will do well against Knuckles. Drake had Uncharted 4, and he wasn't exactly weak before that, and while Mania was a good game, it's not like it was a huge knockout, just better than what we're used to from Sonic. Overall, I think the characters will stay mostly constant from previous contests. Sadly, I don't have Knuckles, Tails, OR Metal Sonic winning their first rounds matches (of which they all have competitive ones).

Is it? I'm looking it up now, and all I can find is that his foster father was Shintaro Kazuma, which would indicate that Kazuma is his family name.

A couple of notes on Kazama Kiryu:

Firstly, "Kiryu" is the character's name. "Kazama" is his family name. Japanese names are backwards compared to western names.

The Yakuza series has been around for a while, but Yakuza 0 was released in 2017, and was the first game to gain any real traction. Since then, Sega has released Yakuza Kiwami, a remake of the first game, Yakuza 6, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 (a remake of the second game).

In fact, there is a second Yakuza character in the contest: Goro Majima. However, I doubt Majima will beat Master Chief. At best, he'll pull a Felix and embarrass him.

ALSO, it has been leaked that Yakuza Kiwami will be one of the free PS+ games for November. However, as I write this, I realize that the Kiryu/Bomberman match will take place in October, so you can actually discount this point entirely. I imagine that discussions around this match will be a lot different if the contest were delayed for two weeks.

In any case, Bomberman lost to Phoenix Wright before Wright was in Marvel vs. Capcom, and he hasn't exactly done much to gain relevance since then compared to the rising popularity of Yakuza, so I'm going Kiryu.

You do make a good point about Pikachu. Most of Pika's popularity comes from the anime, not the games.

But then you have characters like Captain Falcon, who's more known for Smash Bros than his original games. Let's face it: nobody votes for him because they're an F-Zero fan. It may still be games, but it's also in that same "betrayal" of his origins.

I'm not scared of Master Hand (and I picked Hand to win back in the day). Melee's enduring popularity is in its competitive scene, which Master Hand is nowhere near. Plus, Kuja didn't show up until a good ways into FFIX, so everyone overestimated him.

I picked Spyro to beat Chun-Li just because the last Street Fighter game wasn't well-received and the Spyro trilogy is coming out. That, plus we're probably getting into N64/PS1 nostalgia territory at this point, which benefits Spyro.
