Not your imagination. That is one franchise where the difference between the manga and the anime is not only noticeable, but almost night and day.

True! But Heathcliff always did feel like the knockoff, and no one I knew disagreed.

Also was looking at images of Go-Bots toys and one of them looks like a dead ringer for Transformers' Cosmos.

Not a coincidence. There is a fair amount of cross-pollination between the two series, to the point that Go-Bots (... if you dive deep into the TF Wiki) is considered a Transformers series, albeit one that is very distantly related.

There is a browser extension for Chrome(-based browsers) and Firefox that overrides the Flash player in Crunchyroll and forces it to play HTML5 instead. Thanks to that, I am able to watch anime on my laptop again. Big win!

I've always wanted to get deeper into Lupin.

One of my buddies at Crunchyroll is in the process of watching the entire franchise, from the '60s all the way up to the present. (He had to set aside this entire year to do it.) The impression I get from reading his experiences is that Lupin III has almost no continuity, and the number of different writers and directors involved over the decades means that the type of show it is can be very different from one series to the next. It tends to be a comedy, but it can range from being dark (like the original manga) to being Japanese Looney Tunes (like the "pink jacket" era of the anime). You can pick and choose the bits you like. The "blue jacket" series is the one currently running on Crunchyroll, and that one has been well-received, but you can start almost anywhere in the franchise and have fun with it.

Castle of Cagliostro is a good place to start, but it is important to remember that it is not characteristic of Lupin III as a whole. (The best description I have seen is that it is a good movie, but not a good Lupin III movie.) Lupin is almost a hero character in that movie, and he and his friends are not terrible to each other, which is kind of the point of Lupin III.

Signs I should not read this topic while tired:

I kept seeing The Last of Us 2 and kept thinking to myself, "Don't they mean Left For Dead 3? Is that a thing?" ... No, no, it's not.

And I do enjoy the occasional survival horror game, but I'd probably like them more if I were better at them. For me, Resident Evil 2 was mostly about wrestling with unresponsive controls, rather than zombies.

The discussion here is going to unexpected places. Interesting.

I feel like the methods of the groups in the topic titles need to change. Instead of trying repeatedly to change or destroy things they dislike, why not create things they do like (and leave everything else alone, since there is room enough in the entertainment world for all of it)? This always boggles my mind. ... Then again, I suppose it takes less energy to complain endlessly than it does to actually "be the change you want to see in the world".

The pacing in the Persona 5 anime is driving me nuts. It feels like A-1 Pictures is going to stop and do every single fan service event in the game. Approaching the end of the first cour, and the Phantom Thieves are only starting the third Palace. Unless the series does a bunch of asspulls, there is no way it is going to be able to do all eight Palaces without being a complete mess. ... That, or it will stop at the 'good' ending and leave the 'true' ending for OAVs or something.

*reads the linked article*

I have been a fan of Dead Or Alive since the original (20+ years ago, at this point), and I find this disappointing. The series has always been a blend of fast-paced game mechanics and sex appeal. If you tone down the sex appeal, you get ... Tekken, but faster (and less juggle-happy), to be honest, and Tekken started sucking for me after Tekken 5 (except for Tag Tournament 2). Granted, DOA has been excessive about this in the past, but I feel like DOA5 hit the right balance, and toning down it from that is catering to a ... certain hostile demographic, one that most likely does not play the games (or any games, for that matter).

I have nothing to add to the Star Wars discussion, at this point. Between Zeus and PO, it feels like all possible bases have been covered. To quote ol' Darth, "Impressive."

As far as Mortal Kombat goes, I agree with Wave Master: The games are great when it comes to presentation ("Mortal Kombat has always been, and always will be!"), though I think the character designs can be pretty fugly, sometimes, especially the women. And the game play is clunky, but it always has been.

Almost too many questions and topics of conversation to which I can respond here, but that is a good thing. Going to address several of them in short order.

-- Agelessness / immortality for my superpower, though I imagine my archenemy is going to be a Scotsman brandishing a Japanese sword given to him by an Egyptian ... with a Spanish name ... played by another Scotsman.

-- Having a robot double of myself makes my superpower twice as useful. I can get him to play all the games for which I do not have time, and he can help with the dusting. And I suppose I would use him for naughty business. Immortality breeds boredom, after all, and, if he is a robot version of me, then he is going to ask, anyway.

-- Jamie Foxx annoyed me in ASM2. I do not see him being a great Spawn.

-- I need more Waterdeep like I need a hole in the head. I enjoyed the Mordenkainen book, but the campaign-based expansions (e.g. Tomb of Annihilation, recently almost completed by one of my groups) have done very little for me.

-- Enjoyed Solo. Had a lot of fun watching it, in fact. Reminds me of the old Han Solo books that followed the original Star Wars (e.g. Han Solo At Star's End). A little disappointed that it is doing poorly (... by Star Wars standards), but it is what it is.

-- Rogue One is easily in my top three favorite Star Wars movies.

-- The Last Jedi was designed to be divisive. Lots I enjoyed about it, lots that just made me raise a brow, but they went into it trying to do what the audience did not expect, and, in that regard, it succeeded. Not one of my favorites, but not a car crash, either.

-- ... I thought Black Panther was great, but everybody in my family has the same thought about it: "We liked it a lot, but we definitely don't feel like the target audience."

All right, that catches things up for me, I think, but I will add that I have been actively rereading books from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. (My copies are old enough to not have "Legends" branded on them.) Enjoyable, but it feels a little strange, considering that the 'canon' universe is liberally taking things from "Legends" and repurposing them as needed (see: Solo).
