Thank goodness for all the kata or I wouldn't have known a darn thing in the dating Sim I played.

Admittedly I still only get the gist of what people say in games but I can at least follow along because of what they say in conjunction with what they do, plus I know Japanese sentence structure so it helps to usually figure out what are actions and adjectives with regard to nouns. Then I look up the words and slowly learn a bit more.

For instance with the dating Sim there's parts where you get to suggest like 3 lines of dialogue to a person. Basically, if you have the right items, you'll have up to about 18 suggestions. It's like, there'd be 6 subjects and 3 options from each. Most of the time there'd only be a minor positive reaction to something and the other two responses would be negative or neutral.

It would be like
"She's feeling anxious. How to proceed?"
(Ask about family)
(Mention something from school)
(Discuss another character)
(Lighten mood)
(That reminds me)
(Would she like this gift)

Most of the girls didn't like jokes, go figure.

Easiest ending to get is the teacher ending. One of the harder ones is the GOOD teacher ending where you get through several extra days of events and still end up with her, but it's actually somewhat mutual that you start to like her instead of being how the default one was where it's like "well I'm best friends with your mother now and we'll be seeing each other a lot and you graduate soon..." Leeway into the picture of them in wedding attire. Though I'll admit I'm not sure if his dialogue was him affirming the feelings in that version or him dismissing it. Normally the VA uses proper intonation to note sarcasm or him ignoring somebody else saying something stupid. But it isn't like I can just pop in the game and check. <.<

This is toradora? I love that book/show/manga so I've always wanted to play the game, I have it on my PSP and started to play it when I was first getting into japanese, but didn't understand it at all.

I also played the oreimo game which was *hard* with my understanding at the time. There were these timed challenges. I didn't get far enough to know if it was actually a dating sim, I'm not sure I'd really want to play a dating sim of that series lol.

Visual novels are absolutely an amazing tool for learning japanese.
1. A lot of them are slice of life, so they deal with everyday (if dramatized) language/situations
2. You can read each line and take as much time as you need AND get a voice over
3. You can usually go into a menu and replay the voice over as many times as you want
4. You get visual context clues for what is going on.

I'm *pretty* sure otaku only means "you" in the context of a woman speaking about her husband. It is indeed a polite, informal way of speaking. Unless a counterexample of it being used to mean "you" for another type of person is provided, that is my understanding of the word. I personally think that a japanese person would interpret that as meaning "your house's electricity". Here's a dictionary page with three meanings for .

I played Pheonix Wright 1 in Japanese not too long ago. I have a basic understanding of the language. Either I don't know enough to the point that the jokes went over my head, or the original script was quite a bit drier than the English version. I'm guessing a combination of both, I think that localization team was remarkably talented.

The console/game boards, especially the PC board is completely loaded with incel/"alt right" trolls. I think the only people who browse this site "normally" are little kids or people with exceptionally weak mental constituion and lack things like empathy or the ability to read social cues. So unfortunately that kind of posting goes unchecked.

CE is the only non-game board remaining on the website with any serious activity and there are at least people who will call out the trolls.
