lolllll

at work someone asked me a question

"is this cat blind?"
"why do you ask?"
"When i hold up a treat and move it, the cat follows my hand, but when i put the treat down it keeps looking at my hand and can't see the treat."
"so the cat can see your hand."
"Yeah but not the treat"
"So it is not blind"
"Yeah i guess it's just weird"

So this kitten arrived at the shelter the day he was born early in June, no mom, had to be bottle-fed around the clock. Kittens like that have a 30% chance to make it.

He made it!

This is Duncan, our newest accidental addition. My wife had taken the kids to the animal shelter to donate some toys and play with all the cats in kitty city and he made us fall in love with him. He's at least 8, a little bumpy and I think he's mute but he has an awesome personally.

He was in the shelter almost 6 months before we got him so they dropped the fee to 5 bucks.

Aww that's wonderful! Best of luck with your new friend. I love older kitties.

I'm a little concerned about one of my cats, he's recently become very desperate when it comes to food. He's not losing weight and there is always food available for him, but anytime there is more food available he's very frantic for it, he's also not gaining weight despite all the extra food he's having.

Could be thyroid issues or a number of things. Generally if behavior and appetite change noticeably it's good to see a vet

I didn't realize there were still some library cats around, infrequently. I know of a few bookstores with store cats, but I rarely hear as often about library cats for whatever reason. According to an article I saw in the Chicago Tribune today, Litchfield, IL's library(between Saint Louis and Springfield, IL) has one, called Stacks. And it mentioned that in the staff breakroom of the Richmond, IL library(Nippersink Library), that they have a cat who resides in that room called Newby. I'll post a link to that article later, when I have more time. Anyway the link on Litchfield, IL's library site about Stacks:

http://www.litchfieldpubliclibrary.org/stacks-the-library-cat/more-stacks-photos.html

Also, some other library cats that are still actively serving as library cats:
http://mentalfloss.com/article/52810/10-cats-who-live-library

Library cats are great. Sometimes senior homes take in a cat or two as well. Cats can have jobs!

Through the power of my wonderful cat, my wife has been converted. A friend of ours has barn cats that just had kittens. We're thinking about getting a second cat - a widdle bitty kitty.

We like old people names for animals. I've had our seven-year-old cat since a kitten. Her name is Marta. For the (possible) new kitty, we're thinking Gertrude if we get a girl, and maybe Arthur or Earnest for a boy.

Wow. Over a year ago now this happened (it's post 33). We got a little girl kitty and named her Gertrude.

Awwww. How is Gertrude?

My poor Nosferatu is in the animal hospital. He was totally fine Sunday morning, missed Sunday supper and seemed off, then wouldn't eat Monday morning. I called the vet and got an appointment for that afternoon. Only a few hours later I came home to pick him up and he was not moving and only minimally responsive.

He has bad urinary crystals and had a blockage. So now he has a catheter and fluid IV. He's going to be at the vet for a few more days at least. Thank goodness he got in on Monday. With how fast he went downhill I'm positive he would have passed away by this morning.

If your cat is acting weird don't wait, get the vet.

Visited nosy at lunch and he was grateful for the attention.

I'm pretty sure she's a tortie

Definitely a tortoiseshell cat. They're beautiful. I've heard a lot about tortitude. There's potentially some science behind it. If you recall the tamed silver fox experiment, as the temperament of the animals changed so did their appearance, including coat colours.

I don't know that calico or tortie necessarily have an attitude. They're almost always female cats. Females behave more catty than males do in general. So you're going to associate that appearance with female cat behaviour.

Adopted two kitty cats

What do you recommend for food, litter, toys, play areas or scratching posts, etc?

Any brands recommended above others?

Any good links to toys or window beds on amazon?

Tyty

Congrats! Pics meow? Details? :3

I highly recommend a water fountain for your cats. I have a stainless steel one (Pet 360 or something) I got at costco for $70.

For food, anything not filled with grains or byproducts. I feed Acana which is made in Canada, and a variety of wet food.

The sunny cat bed is amazing. And cheap. Get this and put blankets on it! Cats love it. http://www.amazon.com/Sunny-Seat-Window-Mounted-Cat-Bed/dp/B005AUM8U0

Otherwise scope out local pet stores for something that looks nice and feels sturdy.

I don't know anything about cats (my family was dog only) , but my girlfriend was raised with them and now wants one for our apt.

Help me :x I don't know anything
And anything else you can think of :o

Tytyty

1. - Female cats are great! All cats are. Females tend to be more "catty."

2. - Older is better, no kitten destruction, just ready to settle in to a home!

3. - As far as cats getting along are concerned, if you want to get 2, get them at the same time. The easiest cats to pair are kittens (whichever sex). For adult cats, female + female is the most difficult pairing but by no means impossible. They do not have to be sisters and littermates aren't guaranteed to get along. Speak with people at the shelter and let them know you want to take home 2 adult cats. They may have a bonded pair. Not everyone wants to adopt 2 at once, so go in and make that clear, and I am sure they will try and work with you. 3.5 - that's plenty of room for 2 cats. Get cat furniture, window beds, etc. and they will be happy.

4. - Cats should do well for that! You can just leave out extra food and water. They might be a little bored and lonely, but with 2 kitties it will be much easier for a cat. You cannot do this with a dog. I have gone away as long as 2 nights with my cats left at home. They get stressed but they deal.

5. - Personality, not aesthetics! Truly talk to shelter staff about what you want in a cat. Spend time volunteering there with cats. I bet you'll find one you really love. Barn cats, inured cats, abandoned cats, etc. all can be loving pets. Truly feral cats or cats with serious known medical concerns will not be in a regular shelter adoption program.

6. - Cats train themselves. They're tidy animals. They will use the litter box on their own before they're even weaned.

7. - Significantly cheaper than a dog. You have food, toys, furniture, and your vet exams. Treats aren't needed. I spend probably $80/month max for 3 cats for their basic stuff, vet is extra. I don;t make much money and they don't really hurt my budget.

8. - It's good you think about it! If you have more questions come on back.

I feel pretty depressed about it all. The house feels emptier (especially without Star, since she liked me the most and always went to sleep in my bedroom). But hopefully we can get a new pair of kittens before the end of the year, so that will be something to look forward to.

That is sad. Sorry to hear about your older kitties. Sounds like they were cared for well. It never feels the same when cats leave a home. They are like the spirit of a building.
