Song of Forty-One Days Ago: Strictly Genteel (from The Torture Never Stops [video])

Well, by now we're so far behind I'm just going to be lazy and go through some of the tracks I did for my project recently.

Did the 200 Motels version for this one. Beautiful tune. (The YCDTOSA 6 version is nearly identitcal if you want a non-video version of this, BTW.)

Song of Twenty-Eight Days Ago: Dance Me This (from Dance Me This)

Also from an album that was recently added to Spotify. Did this one a number of times before but I really like it so might as well do it again. Definitely one of my favorite tracks from Frank's late synclavier period (as far as Frank's synclavier stuff goes I prefer the mid-'80s stuff). Shame it's a bit short, though.

Song of Twenty-Nine Days Ago: Phyniox (Take 2) (from Joe's Camouflage)

Another Frank guitar solo from another album recently added to Spotify, recorded at a '75 rehearsal. The playing is a bit sloppy and hesistant (it's rather obvious that this is from a rehearsal), but the solo is pretty good nonetheless. (As far as I know Frank never actually played this guitar solo vehicle live, BTW - neither in '75 nor in any other year. Not sure why - it sounds good to me!)

Song of Thirty Days Ago: Merely a Blues in A (from Frank Zappa Plays the Music of Frank Zappa: A Memorial Tribute)

Great Frank guitar solo from this album. FZPTMOFZ is actually a pretty rare album - I think it was not available in stores and if you wanted to obtain it legally you could only buy it on the official site or something? Quite cool that we can now easily enjoy it on Spotify, even if it does only contain 4 tracks that hadn't been released on other albums previously.

Song of Twenty-Six Days Ago: What Will This Evening Bring Me This Morning (from Frank Zappa's 200 Motels)

Just did this one for my project. Another 200 Motels song I totally forgot about but like nonetheless! The multi-layered vocals in the second half remind me of Yes (one of my favorite bands), but also of the vocals in the way later Zappa song "Fine Girl."

As I point out in my project this was probably recorded for Chunga's Revenge in the summer of '70, but it never made it to that album. Good thing Frank did release it a bit later!

Song of Twenty Days Ago: Stucco Homes (from Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar)

I only recently found out that from 4:13 on, Frank actually quotes the recurring riff from "The Radio Is Broken" twice in this guitar solo! In this track the context of the melody is different as far as the chords go, so that's why I never recognized the quote before despite listening to the track many times.

Song of Twenty-One Days Ago: The Radio Is Broken (from The Man from Utopia)

Doing this one because I read that several times in '80, Frank and his band rehearsed an unreleased medley of "Twenty-One" and "The Radio Is Broken." Unfortunately they never actually played it on the second '80 tour (the fate of many rehearsal tunes), and this later studio version of "The Radio Is Broken" doesn't refer to "Twenty-One" in any way...

Gotta say that rediscovering songs I usually don't listen to has been a really fun part of my project. Like I said I'm not a fan of 200 Motels and never listen to it, so I didn't remember this song at all. I actually like it - even the weird dissonant classical stuff at the end.

Song of Twenty-Five Days Ago: Bogus Pomp (from Orchestral Favorites)

I'm currently slogging my way through 200 Motels in my project. A lot of the music on that album was later actually incorporated into "Bogus Pomp," which would explain why I'm not a huge fan of this album! Actually, after listening to this classical piece again I must say that it's actually a lot better than I remember it being. I certainly like parts of it, it's just not great as a whole and it's too long. That's pretty much the same way I would describe "Billy the Mountain," though I know most Zappa fans love that song!
