and i beat night in the woods

the humor was hit and miss for me. some of it genuinely made me laugh, some of it was a bit much. but the serious shit, finji nailed it every single time. the message at the end really got to me. had kind of a shit year emotionally even though i've done well for some personal goals and with work, so hearing that stuff at the end was super touching that i started tearing up a bit. not out of sadness, really. just reminded of the good friends i have that kept me going throughout 2017.

i think i'm going to send some cheesy messages their way because hey it's the holidays and the end of the year is near!

played a lot of night in the woods yesterday. took some time for me to warm up to it, but yeah, i'm all in it now after stuff has happened. also, i like the routine of talking to the cool people of possum springs!

also got little red lie from the steam sale. been thinking of getting it ever since i read that paste review. i never got around to playing actual sunlight, but i edited a review for it. so yeah i'm excited to be reminded of how the world can be a cold, hateful place! perfect way to end the year.

and because i am bad with money, i got life is strange before the storm and little nightmares from the psn holiday sale. gotta buy these games!

9 and a half hours into prey and i can safely say that i'm REALLY enjoying it. good shot of making my top 10 if it maintains this quality or gets better! i do remember people not liking how it wraps up.

been busy at work though so not a lot of downtime to sneak in some zelda. i did manage to clear the first four shrines and get the paraglider. things will be opening up from here on out, no?

ddlc and butterfly soup! both by western devs who are obviously playing with the concept.

having been in b8 for... jesus christ over a decade, i already "know" umineko is the hot shit. i think people really like that steins;gate? people over at resetera have also recommended the letter and house in fata morgana.

and yeah there's the zero escape and danganronpa games i just hear about how wild they get.

not going to be diving into all of these anytime soon, but yeah, i'll actually consider some of 'em now!

i like the brevity of ddlc! it's very much an "experience" that truly empathizing with each character wasn't my take away. and even with how short some of that stuff was, i still had an emotional response to the characters' plights. i mean yeah having just gone through drama with a couple of women this year probably helped in that regard, but i can't ignore how i felt!

So who is gonna be at fault, Ben or Abby?

i think it's just because 2017 is a banner year for video games really

that and the staff ballooning to the size that it is now

i wonder if they'll continue with this process next year given how taxing it must have been on them to record over a day's worth of podcasting and also shoot videos. i love these deliberations, but i do hope they're not burning themselves out by committing to such a wild production.

beat cuphead!

died almost 500 times according to the in-game tracker but had a mostly good time anyway even if i sucked! those are some real tight controls and wild boss phases.

randomness definitely made it more difficult, and there were some bosses that got frustrating because of it. i know better players can make it so they're never in a position so bad that the randomness just fucks them over, but i'm clearly not at the same level!

also, i played it after the big patch that nerfed the op charge gun and fixed the weapon switching exploit so i have more excuses to make myself feel better.

i'm in the camp of thinking the q&a sections during panels or other live events have just been cringe-fests that i avoid now, but the call-in show has been absolutely fine. it's not a must-listen thing, but it's alright. them being able to screen questions is the difference maker. nobody just gets to be on the phone to try and be funny or ask about an endurance run or how to make it in the games industry. they also just get the caller to ask the question then drop the call immediately so there's no room for sad attempts at humor or awkward conversations.

but yeah if people don't wanna listen to it, it's not like they're missing out on gold.

anyway, i am way more excited for all the goty podcasts now after they've said how long they are and how they've enjoyed it!

internet's been out at home for the past couple of days so i haven't been able to update but hey i beat horizon zero dawn and have also been playing super mario odyssey during breaks at work!

really enjoyed horizon apart from some of the writing falling flat at times (which i think is more on some of the awkward character animation and staging), and i'm very much tempted to get the frozen wilds dlc because i hear good things about it, especially regarding the presentation.

i just love the combat and the variety of options when fighting the machines. fighting humans though isn't great. if guerrila is going to put as much of it in the sequel, they need to improve it.

the world is stunning, and i attribute a lot of it to the lighting. i think ac origins has more interesting locales, but parts of that game don't look as consistently picturesque as horizon's setting.

aloy is good and i love how having a woman as the main character play more of a role in how the people of this world react to her. i can see how some big aaa games, especially ones that have a character creator and let you pick a gender, just don't have their worlds comment on it as a sort of progressive equality thing. i just appreciate hzd tackling it in small and big ways, acknowledging it exists than glossing over it entirely.

i like the intrigue, and i like the themes the game touches on. i do wish it could have gone more into the truth about aloy's identity because it's kind of a big deal! maybe it's something to hope for in the sequel.

anyway, i'm in new donk city now and it's bright and sunny and i'm ready to really explore it while i'm doing nothing for hours at work. what a great thing this device is.

oh i think the melee is designed to be just for you to get a potshot in and push away medium to small enemy machines that get too close. it's really all about the myriad of ranged options and the traps for the big machines. removing components and exploiting weaknesses are super satisfying, especially with how the effects look amazing, whether it's the sprouting flames turning into fiery explosions or the crackle of electricity from a power cell detonating into a lightning storm that paralyzes everything nearby.

also corruption arrows are great and it's always fun seeing the big monsters fight each other.

i watched the first half of season 1 not understanding why anyone loved it with its tired premise of a narcissistic rich has-been asshole who thinks he's hilarious that everybody put up with

i was annoyed with bojack but stuck around for the side characters and the actually funny sight gags with the animal people doing dumb animal people things. also that intro is real good.

but yeah things got real later on and i couldn't get enough of it and now it's maybe my favorite ongoing tv show and certainly the best netflix original.

y'all forgetting that vinny, dan, brad, and even alex were playing pubg obsessively for months outside of murder island. the only reason they stopped was because they just had to do their job and play other games!

jeff also just enjoyed playing it solo, which is the least surprising thing because he's never been into playing anything seriously with a team.

the fact that they had a months-long feature on it where all sorts of funny dumb shit happened helps for sure, but we also have to remember most of the senior staff were constantly sharing stories on both podcasts, and screenshots and video clips on twitter about pubg.

big difference of course was, outside of murder island, they were playing with actually good players like will smith, matt pascual, and even danny o'dwyer. with people who knew what they were doing, it wasn't just the shenanigans and instant team wipes that they experienced!

they also stopped playing way before the cheating got real rampant, so i don't think it'll weigh much on how they talk about it. bugs didn't seem to hamper their experience either.

i'm not as confident about it being the lock for goty as i was months back, but i still favor it over everything else. i am sure it's gonna be vinny and dan's goty! probably in the top 3 for jeff and brad. maybe top 5 for alex.

this latest bombcast's discussion on mario only reassured me that it's not winning goty. only dan and ben showed any enthusiasm over the post-credits content. ben will abandon mario for nier if the support is there, and that's looking very likely. alex also said he'll still be playing mario, but yeah, we all know he will fight tooth and nail for nier.

brad sped through mario just to beat it. he said he's happy to hear there's more to the game, but let's be real here. only time he'll come back to it is when the deliberations are over and he's chilling over the holiday break.

jeff is done with mario.

also, what those two have let slip about their feelings on nier fills me with hope! it actually has a chance at site goty!

my mind still says pubg, but my heart hopes for nier. mario is this year's rocket league/overwatch.

i distinctly remember ben and abby saying they really enjoyed mario but it didn't really stick with them. ben's got nier in his heart and abby's got night in the woods. it's very easy for me to imagine jeff, brad, and vinny saying "it's great but it's another one of those" for mario.

alex might surprise and support it getting high up in the list because he's that sad boy who just wants the happy games to be rewarded. but i think if he feels it in the air that nier might have a shot at #1, he knows inside his soul that he has to do everything to get it there.

jason also likes it, but i wouldn't be surprised if he also ends up throwing his support for nier if the momentum is there! it's either that or nioh that'll be his personal goty!

jan says he really likes mario, but i don't think he'll be making much impact this year. next year, sure, when he's all settled in.

that leaves dan, and he will be torn between backing it, zelda, or pubg. and again, he is not good at arguing. he can be wily with throwing support behind a cause, but he just can't be the one leading the charge. and that will doom mario... to at worst #3 on the overall list.

zelda, even though no one really comes close to dan's love for it, will get the "respect" support for reinventing/returning zelda to its roots. them old guys who've seen it all love that shit.

in this year of amazing games where each one of them has at least one thing they're super passionate about, i really don't see mario winning. it'll be #2 at best. dan, its biggest fan, will 99% have it as his #3 behind zelda and pubg. no one is passionate for it the way some of them are for pubg, for zelda, and for nier. jeff made it point a last year that he'd rather reward stuff that people are in love with rather than games most, if not everybody, "merely" likes. it'd be the safest, most by committee winner, and i think jeff won't be for that. this ain't 2014!

only way i can see mario winning is if they all get tired arguing whether or not nier deserves to be over zelda and mario or if pubg should be considered at all.

which hey may be a real possibility!

but also hell yeah the fact that fucking nier automata having a shot at the top at all in this excellent year is just very good. love mgs but goddamn brad's burn is nuclear. dan sucks at making arguments, which is made all the more apparent come goty time, and he's going to run up against mr. filibuster shoemaker himself when nier gets brought up, not to mention alex, ben, jason, and probably vinny and jeff too.

gonna be up to abby, but i can see her conceding this because it's still her first time and she might be burnt out by that point!

man i am so fucking in on its aesthetics and mood and themes

i can definitely see it in my top 10, even if i think the forced stealth segments just suck and take me out of the experience and that i had the game hard lock right as i had this climactic moment

its cyberpunk cronenberg tech fetish nightmare is just so my thing

speaking of tech nightmares

been agonizing over what other games to buy with the black friday deals since yesterday

bought rakuen and dujanah on steam. promising starts to both, but i think i'm leaning towards dujanah right now because i need more of this absurdist glitch aesthetic. claymation is also fuckin cool.

oh and i also downloaded butterfly soup and doki doki literature club from itch.io. got em for free now, but i'll likely tip the developers when i'm done with them!
