on the one hand, i've always thought the books were a better fit for a tv series than a movie trilogy. and now they can fix some things they screwed up in the jackson movies (like, indeed, not having tom bombadil).

on the other hand, the chances of this being as good as those movies (especially the special extended editions) are pretty much non-existent.

so i'm kinda split on this but i'm leaning towards "no thanks."

yeah, this is where the analogy fails because in my view there IS one person here who is "more malicious."

say there's an argument between user X and timjab and after five posts user X's posts have been 0% hostile and tim's have been 100% hostile. user X goes "fuck it, i've had enough of this shit" and makes a hostile post, and the argument goes down the drain. is user X at fault for the argument failing? to some extent, yes - if he had continued to make non-hostile posts the argument may eventually have turned out to be good. but obviously timjab is primarily at fault. you can say this "doesn't matter" but to me this disctinction does matter.

this reminds me of how muffin always makes a big deal how a woman who got raped is "also at fault" for wearing a short skirt and going into an area she knows is super dangerous. i actually agree with him on that, but i think it's ridiculous to say that it "doesn't matter" whether the victim or the rapist is primarily at fault.

well frankly, when tombolo questions your "timjab was so chill when you weren't hostile to him" claim, you should know you're wrong. since i've started posting here tombolo has been one of the friendliest, least hostile users on the board.

seems to me like you just got special treatment from tim and you can't accept that he wasn't quite as "chill" to other people.

Most of the time I'm doing it I'm not doing it out of a position of being hostile for hostility's sake, though. Like I do legitimately think you are dense in some regards. I do legitimately think you allow poster based bias to inject tone, subtext, etc into people's posts because you're bad at reading it yourself. In fact the Timjab incident is a pretty good example of it too-- instead of even trying to consider why tasteless jokes of certain topics that hit closer to home might be more offensive to certain people you automatically argued for "no Tim was just being hostile as he tends to be the joke wasn't offensive at all" even after you had a lot of other people (and if you can't consider me relatively impartial because I actually like Tim, there were Panthera and others) agreeing the joke could easily be taken as at least a little tasteless.

That's not meant to be venomous that's just meant to be honest-- there's no nice way to say dense unfortunately so it's going to come off as hostile if you're easily offended.

eh, even if i would agree with you that i'm bad at reading tone (and i actually do to an extent - i think i'm FAR better at in face-to-face interaction than reading words on a message board, though) i still wouldn't describe that as "dense." "dense" has a "super dumb" connotation and i just think that's unfair. i do not consider myself particularly smart but i'm not a dumb guy either. autistic savants are often bad at reading tone but still hyper intelligent (not saying i'm one, just saying there's not necessarily a correlation between being bad at reading tone and intelligence). also, when you threw this particular insult at me you never said i'm "dense at reading tone" or whatever - you just called me dense. i'd have been more accepting of you saying i'm "dense at reading tone," though i'd still think that's a weird and unnecessarily harsh way of putting it.

either way, the "dense" thing was just an example of you insulting me so it doesn't matter that much. if the other instances were also examples of "you just being honest," cool. you're still insulting me so i still think you're a jackass.
