I already mentioned it, but I've been trying to work on the middle parts of the comic, but rewriting and redrawing for it is tough, though I should be able to push through. I took a break and messed around with eyes. The guide I'm trying to use isn't in English, so I kinda ended up giving up on following it exactly. Annoyingly, I feel that colorwise, the first attempt, the one on the right, is probably the best.

For comparison's sake. I might need to adjust the showering part a bit more, to enhance the feeling. I feel like the closed eyes don't look as good. Also in the 2nd panel, the guy in the backgrounds far side arm looks better going own rather than being a bit below and straight. By the way, despite this being a later page, it doesn't mean I'm done. I skipped past a lot of the middle because it requires rewrites and possible very different looking panels, so I'm putting it off. As an aside, I'll probably want to make a color chapter cover at some point, the color thing I did above is perhaps something of a prototype.

Also I gotta practice drawing male heads, they just don't look right at all lol

For comparison's sakeI really need to learn perspective, it would allow things to look much more interesting. 2nd panel and 3 panel in particular could benefit from it. 3rd panel will probably need more revisions, or at least should need them, who knows if I'll bother

finally finished this drawing!

This might sound like a crazy small detail considering everything else, but I like how you managed to add the lip stick/gloss. I can never, ever make it look decent when trying it myself, the color is just off, or it ends up being too much. I think its sort of an underrated thing in terms of difficulty. So pulling it off well actually impresses me whenever I see it.

You know, I really should've read my review on this page before I started to work on it again, cause I still very much agree that a third panel on the top (to indicate movement, would've been a good idea. I'm still not super happy with this page (and I forgot her mole). The lack of movement frame, for one, but also it seems tough for me to make it evident she's still hugging on the third panel, without making it look decidedly worse. Skill issues become apparent when you try to convey something, but run into trouble figuring out how to convey it properly.

Like, I do think it looks better, if only because more effort was put into things, but it feels like a marginal improvement. tbh, even though it's the point of the 2nd panel, I get the sense the face is a bit too offmodel in the 2nd panel. Also using screentone means I'm a lot lazier with the dark hair than I am with the white hair, which I feel it also evident in the 2nd panel, at the very least. I should probably keep that more in mind. (I haven't mentioned it in a while, but this still reads right to left.)

Alright so best to ask now, should I make a new topic as soon as this one dies? I originally thought I wouldn't make another topic until October, but activity has been fairly consistent, so I'm willing to make another thread (or if someone else wants to make the thread, that's fine. Either way, the @ 's in the OP should be changed based on activity.

I really need to get better at not having the hair stick out too much to the side. Even if I draw the face itself fine, the hair at the side doubles the size of the head by itself, I don't think I mess up the height very much, or at least not as badly. I've always noticed I had poor control over horizontal hair, just haven't worked on fixing it. When I try to copy things I see, I never seem to be able to do it quite right in that regard.

Despite saying this, it just decided to stop refusing to work for me, I managed to get 3 pages probably close to the final draft stage. It's a bit annoying, cause I feel like none of them really match up to the panel of Lily being half asleep which I posted a while ago, but maybe that's fine? At the very least, I shouldn't keep myself bottlenecked with this project forever, while I'm doing other stuff, it's just kinda, omnipresent, watching me over my shoulder. I'll never be truly satisfied with it, so best I get it done, so I can post it, and it can likely be forgotten by everyone except me.

Ive been having more and more issues with my tablet, so even when I feel like drawing, by the time Ive finally got the issue settled, my motivation is dead. Drew this as a quick test thing, I could do more with this character, but it depends on how willing I am to study the right perspective.

It's pretty good, actually. I forget, did I tell you about the thing where you put the reference photo upside down, and how it usually helps you to copy it better? Like, it disassociates your brain from the whole thing, and allows you to focus on how lines are actually done, instead of your brain filling in the gaps automatically.

Also I've been drawing, but I'm not particularly pleased with how things have come out. Might have to just move on and accept I'm not gonna be happy with a lot, but I suppose I 'could' try redrawing in a more interesting angle than what is currently there. One of my major bottlenecks was the page where it showed different parts of the room, I just couldn't get the motivation.

So I have been working a bit on remastering pages, these are what I've done. I'm not particularly happy with the first page, and for the second, I (clearly) need to go over the first two panels again, though I'm wondering if a more sketchy style is a good idea for the pitch dark panels. But even so, they feel a bit awkward. Also I really hate doing the details in hair, I'm just so bad at it , and I know they don't look right.

Besides the nitpicks I have, I'm curious if you all think this level of art is 'good enough' for a finished product, or at least finished for what it is.

I definitely missed it, but I like what you posted. Despite relatively little detail, I can still feel the 'form' of the dress, which I feel like I'm terrible at capturing, if I did more poses that were less static, I'd more quickly learn how to do it myself.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/5/50e2e8d1.png

So I sketched out the room layout. Removed the random box, added a closet, and I also added a desk. While the room was meant to be sparse, a nearly empty desk with like one paper on it still captures that feeling. Also added a bump into the wall cause I realized since it's an apartment, having a closet would be weird with a perfectly square layout. The inside of the closet should probably be bigger, but it's not meant to be seen anyway. Hopefully having this means I can have the slightest bit more interesting looking backgrounds.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/d/dfe31e8d.png

Page 39, tentative final page, will probably have to get the perspective better, but maybe I can cheat it a bit.

I have some notes for myself, I think I mentioned it before, but on the off-chance any of you have anything to say about it, by all means. So:

  • From about page 16 on, I need to establish better what actually happened, for one, when they were attacked, what exactly happened? Could be obvious, but they were bombed.
  • I think asking/answering the question "how did they survive?" is important. Aloe was late getting back, since she's a newbie. Lily ended up unconscious in the one section that wasn't completely destroyed (and was sealed), and that's a good enough answer for what Aloe would ask.
  • I brought it up before, but I didn't like very much how I did some of the conversation about 'what to do next'. Lily is meant to feel more put together than anyone else, when she's around people, with Aloe dropping her guard only around Lily, but they felt too much like equals, which is a matter of me not trying very hard to get their differences across.
  • In that sense, it's possible that I should move part of that conversation to the next chapter (which sounds exhausting to think about, but hey, maybe I'd do it faster, if I do it at all). But I do think it's important to establish that Lily has eased up from the old days, I don't think I could do that very well with what's in my head for what's next.
  • By the way, I'm definitely gonna have to redraw pretty much everything lol, and probably revamp a ton of panel layouts, beside I switched to different gutter sizes. And also the faces are pretty wonky in earlier pages (well, in later ones too), even in ones where I think I might have been trying. I feel like I might have been improving in the last stretch, slightly.

Anyway, for how long it's been going, not very much to it, but that's fine. Completing something, even something amateurish and short, is the really important thing. I might start from page 4 or so, because the intro pages probably need to be revamped in a different way than the others.

Edit: more like page 7, not page 4

So honestly, I'm more and more liking the idea of the MC intentionally using no extra shading/screentone (maybe a little bit). The issue is, the backgrounds can't be super blank all the time, in that case, or else there's not as much contrast. And without contrast, it would feel a bit dumb. I should probably add more tendrils to the top panel around the middle, the reference I was using for it, didn't, but it feels a bit empty as-is.

Also for last post's image, I realize having arm over arm makes way more sense lol, not sure why I changed it. I feel like I could make that one decently better just by implementing a few changes... well I guess I'll see how I feel. Might not be worth it.

Truth be told, if I'm improving personally, it's hard to tell. Inktober, I was kinda forcing myself. November and what little I've done in December, has basically been dedicated to drafts, where I can't allow myself to focus too much on quality, lest I get no work done at all. I've realized I haven't done a full work in quite a while... and I still haven't, but I made a quick mockup, at least. I feel like this could become something, but now I'm in my head of whether it's worth it to try and do a whole thing.

I think I've gotten too used to doing very unfinished pages. Doesn't hurt. Better to have them somewhat done, then not at all. Arguably, the best way to do things is to write a script ahead of time, then doing extremely rough layouts, I just have a hard time working that way. I should really try to get at least one more page before the end of the year, going lax for a while killed any productivity I had, even if it was for good reason.

Lot of white space near the top, probably should try to include something there. I really wasn't in the mood to do the 2nd to last panel, especially since the third panel definitely feels like I screwed up the proportions, so I thought I'd rather get down an approximation, since I'll definitely have to get the proportions correct and fixed later anyway. I feel like the dialogue is skipping some steps, probably because I can't (or at least, am not) casually drawing it, so I want to get through everything, but that leaves it feeling a bit awkwardly paced. Might have to live with it, though, I mostly just want to have finished 'something', even if that something has 100 more flaws than I'll be able to see myself, when completed.

I was working then my tablet did it's thing, so I'll just bump now to make sure. I got a quote on what the repair cost would be... it would be more worth it to buy a new one, I feel.
