that's very true, yes. especially considering that they were unfamiliar with deception and keeping secrets and stuff before they made contact with humanity, since their communication is through thought. so i guess they probably really didn't consider that Luo Ji might be covertly working on some way of getting around their broadcast block. since they don't do ANYTHING covertly. but still, i would think that they'd want to leave no room for an unforced error. maybe that's just my human thought process though, lol.

yes, that whole sequence was so brutal. it didn't affect me to any inordinate amount, but tbh probably only because i had that part as well as some other broad strokes spoiled for me before i even started in on the series, from listening to the Worlds of Speculative Fiction video about the series from the playlist i posted before. it's something that i listen to when i'm out walking and getting my cardio in or when i'm doing my weightlifting routine, so the multitasking does limit how much attention i am giving it, and so i didn't remember all the details that were relayed, but i knew it was going to be something that was described as a microcosm of the dark forest hypothesis itself. so i was somewhat mentally prepared for it. although even so, it was still devastating and brutal. i had the opposite reaction as you, in that i couldn't put the book DOWN. and now i am curious as to whether the surviving ships are going to be a factor at all in Death's End. if there was anything about that that i was spoiled on, i don't remember. it should be interesting if they get word that Earth is safe for now, and just have to be like "well shit, we murdered thousands of our brothers and sisters in arms for no reason, we all could have just headed back together" lol.

finished The Dark Forest. i give it a 5/5. it was really good. i think i may even like it better than The Three Body Problem. it really ratcheted up after the timeskip. i do still think it has some plotholes though, mainly the one i talked about before, and also i really don't get why the Trisolarans didn't kill Luo Ji with the droplet they sent to Earth. they tried to assassinate him multiple times before, he is the ONLY human who they cared about actually getting rid of permanently, and they have this weapon that could do it easily, and it was heading seemingly straight for him, only to change trajectory at the last minute and go do its thing with the sun at the Lagrange point. which isn't a fullproof way of guaranteeing that humanity could never broadcast the coordinates of Earth and Trisolaris to the rest of the galaxy. they should have anticipated that Luo Ji could be able to think of some way to get around it. but still, i found the resolution to be enjoyable nonetheless, and am looking forward to starting in on Death's End and closing out the trilogy.

about 80% of the way through The Dark Forest now. just finished the chapter with the droplet. ho. lee. shit.

I finished Edgedancer, which is my first book finished in 2024. I don't remember when I started this last year, but I guess I had burned myself out on reading so much in 2023 in a short period of time. I want to read 10 books this year and my only resolution was to read more, so one book(albeit rather short) in the first ten days of the year is a nice enough start.

oh, how'd you like it? Lift really grated on me at first tbqh, but i eventually grew to think she wasn't all that bad.

i still need to go back and finish Rhythm of War......

haven't read any The Dark Forest in a couple days cuz i've been too distracted by having started up Langrisser I&II Remaster, but the trailer for the Netflix adaptation of 3 Body Problem just dropped today:

nice. i'm not really into graphic novels tbh, but i have Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy on my to-read list, after watching a Youtube video about it from the playlist i posted earlier, Worlds of Speculative Fiction. apparently she drew some inspiration for it and how mages work in it from the Dragon Age games, which is awesome. and looking at her other works, she's written a Mass Effect tie-in novel. i like this woman.

about 2/3s of the way through The Dark Forest now. i stayed up more than an hour past my bedtime last night just reading in bed because i literally couldn't put it down. i had to force myself to stop reading and just get to sleep. i've gotten to a very engaging and interesting point in the narrative.

i got to the end of the section "The Spell", where Luo Ji goes into hibernation and the eventual fates of a lot of the minor characters are briefly recounted, and into the next section where Luo Ji is brought out of hibernation nearly 200 years later, and everything is different. a lot of crazy stuff has been happening so far, and i'm not even that far into this section yet. i think the rest of the book is going to go rather quickly.

argh, i want to get it and play it, but i can't justify the expenditure right now since my backlog is already too big, and my Games drive isn't even working right now

damn, i honestly can't remember. i re-watch/play/read things so infrequently these days, since my backlog of books, games, movies and shows is so big. i think it might have been X-Men TAS last year? after i heard about X-Men '97. but even that barely counts since the last time i watched it, i was a little kid, and i think i only ever saw like the first couple seasons anyway.

yeah, like a decade ago, and i still feel bad about it lol. i didn't do it because i didn't like the girl, i did it because i was so clueless and shy that i just didn't know how to proceed, so i just didn't proceed.

i wish i had stayed interested in the game long enough to try out all the big mods for the settlement creator. i had big plans for themed builds, but never finished most of them, cuz i played the game for the most part pretty near to release, and the official Creation Kit hadn't come out yet, so all the mods were created with third party software and they were really janky and limited.
