Ngl I wonder how it was back then. I mean the 23'd budokai had already been a big timeskip that completely redesigned the protagonist, so to have a second big timeskip right afterwards where he's a dad and the genre changes from fantasy to scifi must've been huge

the skip from end of the frieza saga to beginning of android saga was pretty gnarly

Watched 95 episodes building up to goku's transformation. And within a blink of an eye Trunks shows up and obliterates Frieza. It's such a great way to kick off the next arc by completely undermining everything before it with time travel and more SSJs

nah, DBZ is a far more brutal show

they missed out on goku getting a hole blown through his chest just so he can hold his brother down while his nemesis kills him; all in front of his son. I'm grateful I and so many other kids in america were exposed to this level of brutality on a daily basis at such a young age

totk is a step down. Too much of the repetitive crap from other open world games sunk its teeth into this game

played for about 20 hours. Finished up the wind temple which I thought was pretty damn fun. Literally felt like I was climbing into heaven. It was a remarkable experience to go from just tryna whats up to a homie, to conquering K2, climbing a floating ladder of broken debris, and ascending into a maelstrom of ships

but the temple itself was meh as fuck. The boss fight was pretty epic but beyond that meh

outside of that though, the motivation to explore really died down. Ive been in like 15 caves already and have 0 desire to go into anymore. Chasms are a chore to navigate. And the sky islands are a pain to traverse given the initial limitations of the battery size. And exploring the overworld just feels more of the same

dont get me wrong, diving into that chasm for the first time gave me a holy shit moment when that music started kicking in. Smashing through boulders in that cave under hyrule castle felt like I was excavating to the other side of the world

but now the game just feels like a big empty barren overworld that you navigate to go from mini dungeon to mini dungeon like shrines, caves, chasms, etc. Like a lot of other open world games, I just use it as a means to get from point A to point B to do some mini dungeon

the other thing that cheapens the over world is the amount of redundant side quests that litter it. Like helping great fairies the same way, getting a korok to his friend, helping a signpost guy stay up, sleeping at stables, helping the soldiers fight some monsters, etc. these are cool when done sparsely. But there are so many it just becomes a chore. Like they straight up feel like dailies in an MMO. I wish they were not in the game, and I really do believe they undermine and cheapen the overworld as exploration usually gets interrupted by one of these and while I do ignore them now, it still feels shitty cuz Im missing out on rewards and not fully completing the content

while I had that sense of wonder and urge to explore initially it quickly died down. It wasnt like botw where I put 150+ hours in that game cuz I was like guess I gotta go to kakariko to finish up this que Oh snap what is that over there let me go take a 5 hour detour

im still gonna try and finish it but man Im not getting lost in it and playing all weekend from morning till night like I did with botw

No remakes are cheap nostalgia cash grabs that need to stop

The more I play the more I realize this game is quite different from botw once you understand the full capabilities of your powers

I think I spent the first 5-6 hours exploring and playing the game like botw. I didnt use any of the zoanite items, didnt really use recall and notably ascend, and mainly did a lot of climbing

But after doing the wind temple, I realized totk isnt about climbing and walking. Its about rising and falling. And the game encourages you to explore the game with verticality in mind. Instead of climbing that mountain why not take a hot air balloon, dive from the sky, or ascend to the top. Or why not instead dive deep into a chasm or launch high into the sky to look at the glyphs

Im really enjoying the recurring npc quests like helping the overly packed korok get to his friend or helping the signpost guy.

The korok looks ridiculous, its like take your bag off. What makes it great is how they get a little bit harder, and theres still so many ways to do them. Like I built a super long stick, stuck him to the end of it, and shoved him right in his friend

same with the signpost guy. This man will literally let himself freeze then let that signpost fall. They get harder and the signs get more and more ridiculous but with added challenges

I'd also hope for more intricately-designed dungeons and for all your tools to not be made available right at the start of the game. They can still make the entirety of the map explorable and be able to tackle any of the major areas in any order, but have like, dungeon items or something be for puzzle-solving and also double as traversal options to expand your exploring options. Like say for instance at the start, you won't just be able to climb sheer cliff faces, but one of the dungeons hides picks or climbing gear so you can do just that.

I feel like with this, they can keep the Zelda feel while still having a wide open world to explore. You won't be able to go literally anywhere or tackle any obstacle at any angle at the start, but I think it's a good compromise.

This is why I loved RDR2 over Skyrim, BOTW and elden ring.

elden ring aint bad as the other 2 but there are still a good amount of caves

yeah it's so stupid. The best part about botw/totk is just exploring the overworld. You're traveling with a destination in mind but something in the distance catches your eye and so you explore. Shrines break this beautiful immersion

as for the literal caves. I think they're OK, the problem is having to use those light flowers every 20-30 steps which gets really tedious as it requires you to press the start button, equip it, drop it, and then strike it
