Spoilers after the first post but it's only like 90 minutes. The story follows this adorable baby whale and his mother. I'm currently about halfway through reading it and it's really neat. The art is really good and the lifeforms are fascinating. Highly recommend. Screenshots from Steam page.

My utopia would be a communist society that actually works the way it's supposed to on paper. Communism -- in theory -- is the ideal form of government. As we all know, in practice, it's absolutely atrocious.

But the society we have instead, capitalist, is a perpetual struggle to fight consolidation of power, corporate interests, decisions being made with only short-term gain in mind, a wanton disregard for others...it's completely driven by extrinsic motivation, which is what's lacking in communism, and less vulnerable to being torpedoed by human nature, but it's still heavily, heavily flawed.

What do you mean when you say communism? Do you get any of your own stuff? Do you have your own computer, phone, and vehicle? Are you sure you don't just want heavily-regulated capitalism?

Like I'd say I'm a libertarian but I want some shockingly invasive business regulations because maximum freedom is different from minimal regulation.

A "no murder" law is good for individual liberty because it protects you from getting murdered, which is more salient than allowing you to murder. Similarly, business regulations that prevent billionaires from turning into trillionaires are pro-freedom because they protect the 99.999% of the businesses that are small and medium.

There are such vast resources available in our solar system alone that we may never need to dig another hole deeper than we need to plant crops. It's oversimplified here, but the concept is real.

What exactly do you mean by this? I am imagining the same school buildings with the same students and teachers, but the students have a lot more freedom to pursue their interests and the teachers facilitate them. So if someone knows they want to be a stay-at-home wife they can learn the skills necessary to be the best wife and mother and household manager they can be.

"Traditional school" is not good and should be deleted from the face of the earth. Instead of tests and grades, kids should develop skills and build a portfolio of work. All the students should be allowed to do whatever they want. Literally everything can be used as a vehicle for self-improvement and it's the teacher's job to figure out how. Oh you're browsing instagram all day? What do you like about this instagram feed? What is the difference between a good and bad instagram? Do you want to try photography and marketing your instagram?

I regret every history class I've ever taken. I learned nothing in any of them. If I were doing the things I liked (math, science, music, programming, languages) I would have gotten much further in all of those things. I would have collaborated with other students and written music and made video games and it would be really easy to demonstrate the value that I could bring to a prospective employer

Trigonometry is a lot harder than calculus.

After algebra 1, you can manipulate polynomials. In calculus, it's really easy to work with polynomials. The concepts of a derivative and integral aren't hard to understand, and they have important applications to a wide variety of contexts. And polynomials are really easy to take the derivative and integral of.

Calculus isn't a self-contained thing. It's everywhere all over math and physics. If a geometry student asks why a square pyramid's volume is 1/3 of a cube's, the answer is perfectly comprehensible to anyone who's taken algebra 1. It just requires a detour where you learn a little calculus. But the necessary calculus is perfectly comprehensible to anyone who's taken algebra 1.

Nah basically nothing should be required. "Classes" are an incredibly limiting concept. Kids should be doing creative stuff all day with slight guidance from their teachers. They will learn what is needed as they encounter unfamiliar problems they need solutions to. I'd be more impressed with someone who has a portfolio compared to someone who knows what a cosine is

Also why calculus? How many people are taking derivatives on a daily basis? Statistics is much more generally useful.

The Heart of LISA
Preserving the original content of the game has always been really important to us all, but the changes we decided to make on our own were ultimately done to better express the main themes and values of the game. Many characters in this game are miserable people persisting off of lies and fantasies. To a degree, you will always be dealing with inappropriate characters and circumstances in this game. Feeling uncomfortable and questioning motives is a big part of it. It's designed this way, but to what degree? And for what purpose?
The stories, jokes, and characters of LISA are never meant to attack or denigrate who someone is as a person. Instead, they are meant to motivate reflection. And although the game features dark characters, it doesn't want to wallow in this notion. Quite the opposite. Even when the world feels like it's completely lost and you are all alone in this mess, you still have to take care of yourself.
You still have to find a purpose, find what you love. We all deserve it, and we are in this together. Buried underneath all the chaos, that's what LISA is about. And if only a tiny piece of that resonates with even just one player, we will have done things right.

No one outside of Texas, or without specific knowledge of Texas laws, could ever have gotten this. In Arizona, the default understanding is that toothpaste, toothbrushes are taxable, restaurant food is probably taxable (but maybe not, if SNAP benefits can be applied in that area), and non-restaurant food may be taxable depending upon the local municipality laws.

If your goal was to educate others about either Texas's laws and their peculiar oddities or to point out how odd taxation laws are broadly, I guess you get a point. If you wanted someone to answer the question you posed correctly, you lose all the points. This is such a weird factoid level of information that only the best trivia nerds might happen to remember it some day.

I don't remember any other flavors existing but I remember that this was shockingly consistent. Cherry has always been one of my favorite candy flavors so I don't know why I hated it so much in medicine. Is it just me or do the town segments feel really autobiographical? Like I would believe that Toby Fox had really religious parents who sent him to church for kissing a girl or whatever. I would believe that he had a friend with a laughy-jokey parent who got sick and didn't want to burden him with how serious it was. Maybe that's just a sign of good writing.

Chapter 1 was fun, put Jevil to sleep. I'm wondering if your soul being a heart is, like, the card suit. Like maybe Suzie's is a club and Ralsei's is a diamond. The heart on the overworld looks very much like the suit.

Chapter 2 is really good. The Queen is such a well-written character. I love the way she plays off Berdly and Noelle. I love that she immediately abandons the plan to plunge the world into darkness when Ralsei informs her that everyone will die. "Whoopsies didn't know that'd happen, you can go ahead and seal up the fountain then"

Chapter 2 seems to be about challenging Kris's role as the designated everything-doer and I'm all about it. I loved when Suzie and Ralsei learned S-action and R-action. I really love how much agency Noelle has. She's smart, so she actively participates in puzzles and offers solutions. Crazy.

I did the Snowgrave route, which is a much better take on the genocide route imo. Much better game design. It's cool that Berdly cares about Noelle enough to protect her. Her resistance to casting the spell was neat too. Good segment.

I'm dying over and over again to Spamton NEO but that's fine, I'll beat him eventually. I'll play through chapter 2 normally once I beat him.

Probably better than Undertale. The animation is definitely a lot better. There are a lot more people on the staff and it shows.
