I can see background extras / non-speaking roles largely being replaced in the near future. Doki Doki Panic was made from a prototype that Miyamoto was working on and already incorporating Mario elements. And aspects of said prototype were used to inspire SMB2 Famicom. It wasn't a reskinning of some random game, it was bringing the Mario that was deep down all along.
