Honestly that's my take. Ego is part of it. Probably the biggest part. But it's also that he determined that the hit he would take in support by everyone openly knowing he took a 50k paycheck would be so significant that it would actually financially hurt him in the long run.

1 mil yen is something like 7 or 8 thousand dollars I think. Which is still a significant amount, but not quite as world crushing as a million sounds to people familiar with less worthless currencies may think.

The quality of the subject is irrelevant. Masterpiece just seems to be a buzzword that, I assume, brings viewers in so it's overused in the "video game youtube essayist community"
