The Kettle War (Dutch: Keteloorlog or Marmietenoorlog) was a military confrontation between the troops of the Holy Roman Empire and the Republic of the Seven Netherlands on 8 October 1784. It was named the Kettle War because the only shot fired hit a soup kettle.[1]

After the Dutch Revolt, the northern Netherlands formed their own republic, while the southern Netherlands remained with Spain. Since 1585, the northern Netherlands had closed off the Scheldt, so that the harbours of Antwerp and Ghent could not be reached by trade ships, and this remained so after the revolt. This gave an enormous impulse to the economy of the northern Netherlands (namely Amsterdam), but the southern cities were dislodged from their important trading position. The closure of the Scheldt was confirmed by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, to which the Spanish agreed. After the War of the Spanish Succession, the Spanish Netherlands had been ceded to Austria by the Treaty of Rastatt in 1714.

Since Europe's "Diplomatic Revolution" of 1756, Austria, and thus the Austrian Netherlands, had been in an alliance with France. Prussia, France's former ally, entered into an alliance with Britain. The change, sensational at the time, made nonsense of all the strategic assumptions and plans, current since 1713, based on the premises that the southern Netherlands would serve as a barrier between the Republic and France and that the Republic's security depended on close ties with Austria and Britain. It was a shift which undoubtedly made it ever more attractive for the Dutch to remain neutral in any conflicts between both Britain and France, and Austria and Prussia.[2]

In 1781 Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor, taking advantage of the ongoing Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, demanded the final dismantling of the Barrier system, and in 1784, he demanded the return of territory in the Overmaas and States Flanders (roughly current-day Zeelandic Flanders), as well as Dutch evacuation of Maastricht and the reopening of the Scheldt. This happened shortly after the Treaty of Paris. Although the Habsburg army in that region was not equipped very well, with a lack of artillery and supply, the emperor decided to threaten war with the Dutch.[3] Convinced that the Netherlands would not dare react, Joseph II had three ships (including the merchant ship Le Louis with the emperor's flag) sail from Antwerp for the Scheldt.

On 9 October 1784, as a letter to Benjamin Franklin asserts, the war seemed inevitable. That day the Dutch ship the Dolfijn was sent out to intercept the Imperial ships. After only one shot, which hit a kettle, Le Louis surrendered.[4]: 91 On 30 October the emperor declared war. On 18 November, the States of Holland reacted: the Count of Salm was asked to form a small army. The Patriots used the incident for political propaganda and organized the Exercitie genootschappen militia all over the country. The Admiralty of Friesland offered two new warships, but they were unable to leave the port of Harlingen and were dismantled.[4]: 92 According to the Annual Register for the years 178485, Dolfijn would have needed a full broadside of seven guns to stop Le Louis. Austrian forces invaded Dutch territory, razed a custom station and strongly occupied the old Fort Lillo, at the time used as a vegetable garden.

On 13 February 1785, the Dutch ambassador Van Berckel wrote an extended letter to John Jay, in which he explained the situation.[5]

As a consequence of this short skirmish, and under the mediation of France, negotiations were reopened between the countries. This led in 1785 to the Treaty of Fontainebleau. It was decided that the Scheldt would remain closed to shipping, but that the southern Netherlands would be compensated for this by the Republic. At a rough estimate the Republic paid 2 million guilder (according to other sources 10 million guilder).[6] Much later on, definitive agreements were made between Belgium and the Netherlands about accessing the Scheldt. The war contributed to the decline and fall of Duke Louis Ernest of Brunswick-Lneburg, advisor to the Dutch stadtholder, who was accused of favouring the enemy due to his familial ties to Joseph.

Update: Bloomberg has corroborated Reuters' report from earlier today.

Reporter Jason Schreier shared that Bloomberg has seen an email written by Gearbox's Chief Communications Officer, which notes that there are "many options under consideration".

The letter reportedly says "The base case is that Gearbox remains a part of Embracer... However, there are many options under consideration, including Gearbox's transfer, taking Gearbox independent, and others. Ultimately, we'll move ahead with whichever path is best for both Gearbox and Embracer."

This letter matches up with Reuters' report, and reportedly ends by saying that "there will be a lot of speculation in the coming weeks."

Embracer Group is reportedly weighing up options on what to do with Borderlands developer Gearbox Entertainment, including selling the US-based studio, a report from Reuters claims.

Published earlier today, the report states that three people familiar with the situation have told Reuters that a sale is on the table as Embracer Group "looks to shore up its finances". Gearbox market materials are already reportedly available to view to potential buyers.

Two of Reuters' sources claim that it's mainly international gaming groups which have expressed interest but have also cautioned that a deal may not even happen. Representatives from Embracer Group and Goldman Sachs the company working with the studio to explore a potential sale have declined to comment to Reuters, with Aream & Co (an investment bank also involved in the deal) not responding to the request.

Embracer acquired Borderlands studio Gearbox Entertainment back in February 2021 for a staggering $1.35 billion, but the company has continued to bring in other developers, including Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montral, and Eidos-Montral.

But back in June 2023, Embracer announced a "restructuring program" which would include lay-offs following the collapse of a $2 billion deal, and at the beginning of September 2023, Saints Row developer Volition (which is one of the many studios under the Embracer umbrella) announced it was being shut down after 30 years.

The official Twitter account for Space Adventure Cobra manga creator Buichi Terasawa's works revealed on Monday that Terasawa passed away due to a heart attack on September 8. He was 68.

In 2003, Terasawa had revealed that he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 1998, and he underwent surgery. He also revealed that despite radiation and chemotherapy treatment, the cancer relapsed. His second surgery left him paralyzed on the left side of his body.

Terasawa was born in 1955 in Hokkaido. In 1976, he moved to Tokyo to study under Osamu Tezuka.

Terasawa published the Cobra manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1978 to 1984. The manga followed the titular Cobra, a man who can turn his left arm into a gun, and who is on the run from authorities and nefarious forces due to his mysterious past. The manga was adapted into a 31-episode television anime and film in 1982. The Space Adventure Cobra - The Movie anime opened in July 1982, three months before the television series premiered. Terasawa launched the sequel manga Cobra: Over the Rainbow on Kadokawa's Comic Walker and Nico Nico Manga websites in November 2019.

Terasawa launched the Goku - Midnight Eye manga in 1987. The manga inspired two original video anime (OVA) in 1989. During the 1980s, Terasawa had begun using computers to make manga. He was the creator of the Kabuto and Black Knight Bat manga. He also created the Takeru manga, which is considered the first comic book series made using computer graphics.
