An idea I've been playing with is a "group photo" or "postcard" of this community's favourite VGM, something specifically visual rather than spreadsheets and playlists. So this year's experiment will be using https://topsters.org/ to compile all day 1 nominators using their first-slot song! I tried it on last year (with minimal proofreading) and got a nice 74-sized chart:

If people are interested enough to care this year, I can let you choose a different nomination and thumbnail to represent yourself (https://topsters.org/ works well because it has a game database, and lets you upload custom thumbnails).

This is really just a proof of concept though, my ultimate vision is a nicely-designed chart (not Topster) with each user's pick of *any* VGM! The idea is to be a visual snapshot of the community, with each song coming together to paint a picture of "Board 8 VGM." Let's see how this year's trial run goes!

This is really cool! I'm not sure if I want Shatter to be the rep for my tastes for vgmc 17 even if it was my first nomination. I'd prefer it to be from a game I know better about/have played before but I haven't decided what would replace it.

Kinda both but especially the name. Alliterations are cool. Was disappointed with the name "Freezing Temple" but like oh well ig. At the end of the day, it's the same song and doesn't really matter. It's a banger either way so I instantly supported it without hesitation.

hmm guess I'll never understand the appeal of songs like SPHILIA and EXSPHERE. They're possibly two of my least favorite winners in any contest ever, and that's not only including b8-specific contests but just game music contests in general. I must be missing the context here, because I remember someone mentioning the former was a really emotional song in the context of the game which is why they loved it so much. SPHILIA is significantly more listenable (and therefore significantly better imo) than EXSHERE though so I'll give it that much.

Ah okay. Though as I said before, I'd argue even the winner isn't determined by entirely fair means. I suppose that can't be helped though.

I don't even think vgmc accurately determines the "best" song as some winners have been polarizing (vgmc 13) and others or at least other "retirees" as they're called have been beaten by "non-retirees" in BOST before (see the Meta Knight's Revenge vs Persephone matchup). This means that just because something isn't retired, that doesn't mean it's not as good of a song as any given retiree. A lot of vgmc (and BOST), despite seeding, does somewhat depend on luck to an extent. I guess you could argue that vgmc is more accurate of the voters' true opinions on the contestants, but it is far from perfectly accurate either.

This may arguably lead to more accurate results, but at the same time, it might not. This could also become even more reliant on luck; what if OST that is clearly preferred rolls its absolute weakest song against an obviously less preferred OST's strongest song? Chances are, the less preferred OST will win. Then again, I guess there's no real perfect formula to this. The most accurate way to determine this would be to force everyone to listen to the entire OST of every song in the bracket then vote on the OSTs as a whole alone, but that's obviously way too time consuming. I'd also argue that finding every single piece from an OST in order to have them compete in the bracket then making sure each piece has a YT upload would also be too tedious especially considering how often vgm gets taken down from YT.

I had no idea going into this contest that what I was nominating had already been in every previous BOST. I expected it to also be out by R3. I guess luck was on my side!
Congrats to both finalists! EO3 also gets bonus points though for having one of my favorite discoveries: Sunlight on the Water (arranged version).

Other favorite discoveries include (but aren't limited to): Archange (AC7), Castanets (RO2), Running to Horizon (Enthusia), and When the Heart Ignites (WA 5).

Somehow of the five favorite discoveries I mentioned above, three were beaten by my own nomination, marking the second contest in a row my nomination beats a favorite discovery (the first time was vgmc 16 with Shevat from Xenogears being my favorite discovery that got beaten by DKC's Aquatic Ambiance in round 4). That's wild.

Match 1: this is my 2nd least favorite MRD song so far. It's decent unlike my least favorite but this is still a very easy vote for Brawl.
As for Bramble Blast, I'm just gonna copy-paste my commentary from rtvgm for it--I really like the acoustic guitar on this. This is a great remix of an already great song. However, Im probably one of the only people who still enjoy the original song much more. The melody feels drowned out and hard to hear at certain points in this remix. I might even go as far as to say this is kinda overrated. As I said before though, its still a remix of stickerbush symphony, so its still great by default despite my thinking the original is better.

Match 2: I actually don't mind the singing in Kimigatame - For You (2016) all that much. It's good but doesn't hold a candle to Shadows.
Hooooo boy Shadows Cast by the Mighty is an absolute banger. Probably either my 2nd or 3rd favorite from the ost (still annoyed Hellblade wasn't in the set but whatever anyways). I had this ranked 2nd out of 152 songs from the 2021 contest if that's any indication of how much I really dig this song. That guitar solo is pure bliss.

First matchup is kinda painful because I supported Genshin but I nominated CT. I like the CT song better ofc but dang both are good.

Second matchup is pretty easy; I like Uncontrollable sorta but really don't like Face of the Deep.

Snubs matchup is close because both are really great. I feel like the woodwind melody in College was a little too loud/rough on the ears though despite being good overall, and Resolve is super epic, so I'm giving the edge to SC2.

Yoshi. I have a bit of a story to tell on this one. I got my first console when I was 7--it was the Nintendo DS. I had Mario Kart DS but hadn't played it yet at the time. One time, I brought over my DS to a family dinner and let my cousins play with my DS. They decided to play my copy of Mario Kart DS that I had brought over. They showed me how to play it, and I distinctly remember that both of them used Yoshi. After learning how to play the game, I became addicted to it for a while, and because my cousins both played Yoshi, that was my character of choice almost all the time. Even after moving on to play other Mario Kart games like Mario Kart Wii, I still usually mained Yoshi.
