Well, I really wanted to love Ghostwire: Tokyo, but it's just too repetitive. You really only have three weapons, plus a crappy backup bow. It doesn't take too long to catch on to how an enemy functions and start winning every fight. The only time it really came alive was during an optional sidequest that locks you in a haunted school, where it becomes a fairly decent horror section. You can change your outfit, but it's kinda pointless since it's first-person. You really only see your whole self in cutscenes and the clothing menu, plus your arms during gameplay. You don't even see your legs when you look down.

There's these optional sections where you have to protect a target from getting its life drained by the enemies, but the enemies ignore you in favor of draining the target, so you can just casually walk up behind them and do an instakill takedown. Even if another enemy is right next to you when you do this, they'll continue ignoring you. The only difficult one was when some poisonous ground spawned around the target that I couldn't walk on.

At least it's got some creativity in it. When it rains, the rain drops are actually blue kanji for some reason, and I once saw kanji falling like snow. I liked seeing the various mythological Japanese monsters, like the weasel with scythe blade arms, the things that are the size of a door and trick people into getting trapped behind them, and the intelligent floating two-tailed cats that act as shopkeepers. When your spirit detective buddy talks, his voice comes out through both the TV and controller speaker (which I think only PS5 has). I also just like when there's a "lights are on, but nobody's home" kind of catastrophe.

Something I found odd is that not every sidequest requires you to talk to every spirit involved after completing the main objective, and they won't pass on until you talk to them after. So you talk to spirit A to start, talk to spirit B for more info, then accomplish the objective and talk to spirit A to turn it in. Nothing requires you to talk to spirit B so they can get closure and pass on. You've gotta remember where they were and track them down yourself. You don't get anything from it, but it's just an odd decision to make it optional to help every spirit pass.

There's lots they could improve upon in a sequel, but since this is the last game Bethesda made before getting bought by Microsoft, it probably won't come to PS5.

Wow, Powerwash Simulator is also getting a crossover with freaking Warhammer 40k. Like I said, it truly is anyone's guess as to what they'll do next.

Finished playing- I MEAN HAVING VIVID DREAMS OF Hogwarts Legacy. It's pretty alright with a solid foundation to build on for a sequel. It won't win any game of the year awards, even in a world where nominating it wouldn't cause Twitter to have a literal nuclear meltdown. I was kinda wanting it to finish up near the end. Still, it's a gargantuan improvement over the last Harry Potter game, which was just a cover shooter with magic.

I wish there was more to spend money on. Once you get your own room to grow plants, brew potions, and care for animals to get byproducts from, all you can really buy are cosmetics and new gear.

The difficulty breaks in half once you get the ability to add buffs to your gear, so you can put your strongest plant damage booster on, toss out a couple Chinese Chomping Cabbages, and they'll tear through everything around them. Put on the invisibility spell, sneakily toss a couple 'roided-out cabbages, and they'll clear out any threats. Makes me think of those times in the Far Cry games where you can free a caged animal and just enjoy the carnage from a distance.

Some dataminers found references to a more in-depth classroom and house point system. You could earn points for your house by doing various little things and lose them for being mean and using dark magic. It could have essentially been a magical version of Bully. If they make a sequel (with 15m sales, I don't see why they wouldn't), they should definitely bring it back.

I'm gonna do Ghostwire: Tokyo next. It's a first-person action horror game where you face down against various Japanese paranormal creatures; the kind that have all sorts of unique, creative, and creepy designs. It got what looks like a roguelite/roguelike mode last month, along with new free missions, enemies, and abilities for the base game.

hecc yeah, legit horror game from Pokmon and GameFreak. there are certainly plenty of Ghost types with Pokedex lore fitting of that.

There's another girl with the same model elsewhere who says not to talk to her, or she won't hear the elevator, so the ghost girl could be this one's psychic projection.

More non-horror games should have horror or horrorish sections. I doubt we'll see any horror games from anyone besides Capcom or the hollow shell of Konami, so other devs should give us a taste of what they're capable of.

Spoke too soon; there's the buzz again. It does love giving a false sense of security, I guess. I wonder if the defrost is just doing the bare minimum to keep it down for a few hours. Either way, we've got another deep defrost in the near future.

I hate this fucking thing.

Some updates on the games I mentioned:

-The cat game is Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean. Yeah, I groaned, too. Looks like it's the third in a series, and the other two got fairly good reviews.

-Marathon is indeed a PvP game, despite the original being single-player, so there goes my interest in that.

-Alan Wake 2 is going to be digital-only for every platform. Their reasoning is that less people buy physical anymore, and even if you do, you have to download a day one patch anyway.

-The MGS3 remake is called MGS Delta. I don't know why they're playing coy; the RE, Dead Space, and Silent Hill 2 remakes just used their original titles. And one of those is a fellow Konami property.

I think the freezer's defroster actually worked. I haven't heard any buzzing all day. Just took a bit to kick in, I guess. Still, might be too early to tell. We'll see how things are tomorrow. Hope we can move things from the backup freezer. It's icing up as well, but thankfully doesn't buzz from it.

Watching the Playstation showcase. Stuff I think looks interesting:

-Phantom Blade 0: Badass samurai game against some magical opponents of some kind. Don't know if it's part of a series I hadn't heard of. Will look later.

-Sword of the Sea: From the director of Abzu and Journey, it's something that looks like a hybrid of the two. Very gorgeous desert and waterscapes with a sword you surf around on.

-MGS3 remake: Looks fucking gorgeous, but with this being modern-day Konami and Kojima absent, don't get your hopes up.

-Forget the name, but it's some adorable hack-and-slash with a pirate cat. Very nice art style.

-Alan Wake 2: I have a very high opinion of Remedy's track record. This will lean more into horror and have multiple playable characters. Due to the lighting, I couldn't tell if there was more than two. Looks like it'll take after the recent Resident Evil games/remakes. Really hope there's another song from Old Gods of Asgard.

-Assassins Creed: Mirage: Looks good. It'll be interesting to see how they add the characteristics of the old and new games together. I like that it's in a big city again and has a protagonist with a preset gender and personality. Makes for more consistent, fleshed-out writing.

-Ultros: Very colorful Metroidvania with a nice art style.

-RE4make for VR: Nice if you have VR, but I'd rather they make a first-person mode for it.

-Marathon: A revival of an old Bungie property. The trailer and environments have an interesting art style. Like, it's a sciencey testing lab with number labels and guns with colored parts, like they're test models.

-A device that is essentially a Switch, but PS5.

-The finale, Spiderman 2, with Peter and Miles both playable. Never got into the first for some reason. Guess I'm not really a superhero guy.

AW2 and Sword are definitely the two I'm most interested in. I'll also keep an eye on Marathon. This being Bungie, it could easily become another multiplayer-focused thing.

The defrost function is usually an automatic function of the fridge, independent of the controls. Freezers usually do it to avoid excessive ice buildup.

Guess it's just not doing its job, then.

sorry to hear that, Mega. how old is the freezer? could it be the wiring getting old? the house I'm in has had work on this and that but it still has problems because of a deeper wiring problem.

We got this thing last year; approaching a year of having it. A repairman found that there was some curved pipe in there that was useless without pump, so no idea why it was in there. It was just causing ice build-up and messing with some sensor, but he was supposed to have fixed it.

If I'm not mistaken most freezers have a defroster. That might be going bad and is allowing ice to build up around the fan.

No defrost function I can see. Only controls I can find are to adjust the fridge and freezer temperatures (freezer is on six degrees; the highest), and to do a turbo cool, which is the complete opposite of what I want.

Also, some dude out back is drilling something, which is making a kind of clattering noise. With all the other shit going on, I thought our running dishwasher was also starting to malfunction.

I'm losing my fucking mind here. My mom's forcing us to do a bunch of renovations, I'm getting over the mouse incident, and my brother caught covid again. I really don't need to deal with this fucking freezer acting up again.

Ah, jeez...

So, we've got another mouse, I set up a mousetrap in the gap under our counters, and partially covered up the area with a floor mat so the cat didn't trigger it and get snapped herself. Well, the mouse just got caught, but unlike the last time, there's blood. I can see a spatter through the gap in between the mat and the bottom of the counter, but not the mouse and trap themselves. Now I'm really mentally preparing myself for the gruesome sight I'm gonna see when I pull the mat back.

Fucking thing; why couldn't it just have gotten its neck cleanly snapped like the last one?!

The live-action PPG has officially been cancelled. Good riddance.

Huh, Powerwash Simulator is getting a crossover expansion with Spongebob. That was definitely not expected. Its previous crossovers were with Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy VII Remake, both Square Enix games (before they sold the TR rights, of course), so everyone thought any further ones would also be SE properties. Now that they have a crossover with something entirely unrelated to SE, literally anything is possible.

Someone on Reddit said that Hogwarts would be a good location, since it's absolutely huge and has countless moving structures to expose/cover more dirty spots. Could also be comedy potential in wizards trying to use a smartphone to send you texts, as well as some goofy explanation as to why they can't just use a spell to make their wands spray water. Though the general earthy color scheme could make dirt blend in.

I'd love to see a Mario crossover with an expansion set in Isle Delfino. Sunshine definitely deserves more love and a sequel (which we apparently would have had if they couldn't come up with something original, ultimately resulting in Splatoon). Sunshine even has some pressure washing in it, since that's how it can clean the teeth of the underwater giant eel boss. Perfect opportunity to have a FLUDD skin for your sprayer nozzle, too.

Found out about this real interesting game called Venineth. It's one of those games that's just about controlling a ball and solving environmental puzzles, but this one takes place in some really fascinating alien/space environments and has an appropriately atmospheric soundtrack as well. I'd love to play it, but it's PC only.

Hogwarts Legacy reminded me that I find it kinda stupid in general when magic attacks only activate when you shout them. You'd think that would give your opponent some warning of what's about to happen. HL even proves you don't need to shout them, since using a spell while invisible makes you whisper it, and the whispered spells are just as strong as their shouted versions. By the time Harry is born, everyone should have switched over to whispered spells. Less theatric, but far more practical. These whispering wizards could be called wizpers.

Hogwarts Legacy starts off kinda slow, but really picks up as you acquire new spells. Giving it a loot system for clothing was stupid, though. If there weren't a transmog system, my character would look absolutely ridiculous. A Harry Potter game should have you pretty much always in your school robes. It's been a long, long time since I read one of the books, but I'm pretty sure Harry didn't put on a new hat and scarf every five minutes. Other than that, you can tell there was a lot of love put into it. It really carries the same whimsy as the movies (before they got all super serious and washed-out, of course).

Only real glitch I encountered was a lighting bug where an underground mini-dungeon had excessive amounts of sunlight in it, to the point it was almost completely washed out.

Er... at least that's what I've seen in my incredibly vivid dreams about the game, which I most certainly don't actually own!

Finished the RE4 remake. I can definitely recommend it! All the story beats from the original are retooled to be more dramatic and almost every boss fight has a nice twist to it, though Mendez and Del Lago largely play out the same.

Without going into detail, they resolved a loose end from the original regarding the infected people form the castle and village, which didn't get blown up. It's creepy, but kinda cathartic at the same time.

Rather annoyingly, they tied some unlocks to speedrunning the game, including the beloved tommy gun. I'm the kind of guy who likes exploring and taking his time. I feel like rushing through everything kinda devalues it. I'd rather they do something more reasonable, like get through with no deaths, or no health items used, or a high enough accuracy. I've always found it annoying when they lock great rewards behind you proving you don't need them.

It's our female cat's 18th birthday! Or, at least by my brother's estimate. She was born on the streets, so he obviously wasn't around for her birth.

Well, that sucks. PS5 games can't install from a disc in rest mode. You've gotta have the system fully running the whole time. Can't remember if PS4 games were the same, but they generally installed fairly quick.

Also, just packed away the PS4 since the 5 can do everything the 4 can, plus the entertainment center has less clutter now. Although I'm probably gonna have to break it out one more time, since I found out you can upload Borderlands 3 character saves, but only one at a time. I uploaded two, but when I went to download them on the PS5 version, it only retrieved the latest one.

There's a physical game store about a mile away, and since my brother sprang for the disc version of the PS5, I went over and took a look. It had games from every major console over the past decades, so there was only one shelf dedicated to each modern system.

I got Dying Light 2 (PS4 version, but it has a PS5 upgrade), and I most certainly did not get that one game about wizards, no sir!

Been thinking of some more games I could get. I found Ghostwire: Tokyo for a decent price online, so that's on its way.

I think Greedfall 2 is coming to PS5, and I really enjoyed the original. You could tell that while it didn't have a massive budget, the people working on it were passionate about it.

And there's Evil West. It's a third-person beat-em-up where you're a monster-slaying cowboy with a big variety of weapons. It looks to be a throwback to older PS360-era games, with a balance of nice graphics and fun gameplay. I watched a gameplay trailer and actually felt excitement and hype; two emotions I haven't felt in literal years!

Alright, RE4 remake gets a lot more bearable after that second red cultist.

I like that after you complete the section where you play as Ashley, you can go explore it as Leon to get some things she couldn't grab.

The military island is proving hectic, but still not as bad as the castle. Seems like the gem drop rate is kind out of balance, so oval gems drop much more than rectangular gems, which is unfortunate since there's multiple treasures that require multiple of each gem type to get the most value out of them. I'm probably gonna reach a point where I just sell off the half-complete treasures and excess gems.

Apparently poor posture can affect teeth, too. Mine hasn't been the greatest lately. Sure hope it's reversible.

So, I went to the dentist today, and they found nothing wrong with my teeth. Despite that, my tooth continues to bother me. The only cause I could think of is that I grind my teeth in my sleep, so I got some tooth guards from the store. Gonna be fun trying to get used to sleeping with those in.

Giant group of regular enemies? Check. Red robe cultist disabling my attacks and making instakill plagas sprout? Check. Constantly starving for shotgun ammo because the game keeps giving me money and pistol ammo? Check. Needing to worry about Ashley getting kidnapped on top of all that because they removed the wait command? Check.

Fuck, the castle section of the RE4 remake is no joke. The water room is as much of a pain as ever, not at all helped by the overall more resiliant plagas. Thankfully, the part where Ashley separates from you to turn cranks is less of a pain. Since the bolt-action rifle doesn't come with a scope by default, she's closer to you, and you can take out the enemies coming for her with a handgun. If an enemy grabs her, they just hold her in place instead of starting to carry her off, so you can get a clear shot at them.

But after that, there's a room where you have about 15 guys in an enclosed room that you have to squeeze past to get some breathing room. This room also introduces a couple "fun" new things the red robe cultists can do. First, they can control the plaga you were injected with to make you temporarily unable to attack. Second, they can make the plagas in other enemies erupt prematurely, without any damage needing to be done to them. If it weren't for some convenient explosive barrels, that room would have eaten all my ammo.

The RE4 remake has that thing where reloading a magazine in a partially-full weapon gets you an extra bullet in the chamber. I've been curious if this is a thing real guns do. It seems to make sense if I think about it.

On a similar note, games with fishing in them have fishing line tension to deal with, and careless reeling will cause the line to snap. This is another thing I'm wondering can actually happen. Fishing line is supposed to be really damn strong.
