-Everything to do with microtransactions, loot boxes, paid DLC, season passes, and basically all the money-grubbing dirty tactics that has turned gaming into absolute shit in the last 5-10 years. I honestly can't remember the last time I played a new, triple-A title, because of all the bullshit that modern gaming tosses in fistfulls at you that prevent you from actually enjoying the game. It has to have been almost a decade now - last one honestly might have been Skyrim. Since then, I'm basically exclusively into retro gaming and indie titles, because at least those games usually don't have their heads planted firmly in their own asses.

People have been saying this for like ten years and it's still a flat out lie ten years later.

Do those monetization practices exist? Yes. Is it happening to every AAA game? Not even remotely. The biggest offenders are the annual franchise games and it's not exactly like those were ever not money grubbing

Also I'm 31 which means I've been coming here for over half my life. Yikes. Lots of good/weird memories though. Now I guess I just come here to see which faces recognize, but tbh I don't think much memorable stuff has really happened in at least five years. It's probably a good thing because everyone is more mature, but I miss some of that chaotic vibe tbh. Like the last super crazy thing I remember is the aunt butt guy

Secret of Mana is sad solely for the fact that the soundtrack is way better than the game. I heard some of the soundtrack before I had even played it so I thought it was gonna be like a legendary 10/10 game. I know it does have its fans, but it's pretty weak among the top SNES RPGs

He's talking about a wireless controller. They have USB cables, but they're only designed to be used with the console. It's confusing, because the cable actually only provides power to the controller, but it's still connected over BT

I'm so sick of the looting + crafting that plagues a lot of open world games now. It's all bloat, I'd rather just find arrows than craft them. It's a little better when you craft meaningful stuff, but I'd also rather that just be a reward for completing a special puzzle or dungeon. That shit sucks when you have to get an unusual item to craft it and then most of the time even when you find the right enemy it's a low drop rate anyway

I don't see the purpose of that. A docked Switch works just fine as a console. The Switch Lite at least is smaller and more made to be carried around; I don't see what benefit a console-only Switch would have.

Yeah the docked only one would have to be like $150 to even bother with imo. Or have better graphics but I don't think people want the higher fidelity going to the "inferior" version. It's unclear who the market would be for such a thing, but the lite has a more tangible audience

I'm also surprised we never saw a standalone switch console sold, to contrast the switch lite.

Like, a hardware box that you only plug into the TV? I'm not surprised we didn't see that cause it's a totally different design paradigm.

They should probably do another one unless they want to try catching up to MS and Sony in terms of computing power. But it would be kinda weird to do that now after years of being behind and finally landing on something that justifies not being as powerful.

I kinda hope the next iteration uses a dock that somehow adds power to it, though I don't know if such a hardware exists anywhere. Does the steam deck do it? Idk much about it. IIRC, the switch currently "unlocks" in docked mode by being able to consume more power but the dock itself doesn't actually affect anything. I feel like anything less than 1080p60 for the next iteration docked would be disappointing, that's already kinda out of date. 4K would be cool but I dunno if that's possible

I used to be insecure about my job because it wasn't really in my "field" but since finally moving on to new jobs, I think that's mostly gone. I never ended up in the right field but I'm so far removed from college now that it kinda doesn't matter. I've had to learn to stop trying to find happiness from work and just be content that I'm getting solid pay for relatively easy work.

I used to regret taking the job I got out of college, and while I definitely wouldn't take it if I had a do over, what I really regret more about it now is letting that insecurity affect me. I definitely became more withdrawn because of my job shame which in turn has had me drift apart from relationships that I don't know how to repair now.

Gotham Knights is getting pretty panned I think, it's not a good example. It does seem like this kind of thing is more common, but that could just be because game discussion is so omnipresent now. One thing that's definitely real and doesn't help though is that developers have gotten way too liberal about using patches to fix clearly unready games instead of just obscure or minor bugs.

Gaming in general is fine imo. Every time one of these topics come up people talk about practices from shitty games like CoD and Ass Creed and act like that's the entire industry (those games do sell a ton tho)

Weren't a lot of the 9/11 truthers always right wing? I can't really explain why but I think it might have something to do with the unpopularity of all the middle east conflicts. Then again, invading Iraq was at least initially quite popular with republicans, but of course 9/11 truthers are a small outlier.

I guarantee that a lot of those Trumpers who hate Bush now were totally on board with everything at the time, even though they probably wouldn't admit it. They're shameless and don't learn their lesson. A lot, but not all - and definitely more than ex-lefties who switched

I disagree that games have gotten bad and especially disagree that it's hard to find a good one, you have tons of resources at your disposal to find out about good games. Honestly whenever people say that I feel like it's just coping with the fact they play less. I mean it sounds like you're conflicted about how much one should play.

I will say that I think the "AA" tier of game, if you will, has largely disappeared. Something that's like a Mega Man X or 2D Castlevania or a non-FF JRPG. Now indie games sort of occupy that space, but not entirely. Thanks to indies we get types of games we wouldn't have really seen 15 years ago, but some types have also been lost.

I also can't remember the last time I played a game nearly all day (I think it was BotW and Mario Odyssey), even like a three hour session is really long to me now. I think I'm just at a point where I've played too many games that are in my wheelhouse, it's rare something really blows me away enough to get addicted to it.
