Mario

I agree that Mario "holds up the best" by today's standards in a way, but there's also the least to it. It's basically a more primitive version of the Mario games that would come later, whereas Zelda and Metroid are still pretty unique to this day, especially Zelda. For that reason, Zelda is my favorite, as its a pretty singularly unique experience, and also if you play it with a guide it basically transforms it into a fun little arcadey dungeon exploration game.

Weird that the PS4 was the only non-Nintendo one. I actually ended up picking up more launch era games for my 360 and Vita than I owned for the PS4, but I didn't get those within the first 12 months. I also got a 3080 so I could play games with next-gen visuals on PC within the first 12 months if that counts.

Combination of 1, 3, and 4 I think. I voted 1 because I think the game is ambitious but not that ambitious, and it's only being held back a few months for the next Switch, is my guess.

It's not, it was actually developed by NST, the Nintendo Studio in Washington State that got put on Mario vs. Donkey Kong duty for a decade after they fucked up Project H.A.M.M.E.R. and it got cancelled. No idea what the team that did the other 3D Marios is doing. The rumor is that they're making/made a Donkey Kong game since Retro's been busy with Metroid Prime.

It was very forgettable aside from the ending

Minesweeper could be fun to see. I never got why Tetris is hailed as one of the best video games ever while no one gives Minesweeper the time of the day in those talks, even though they have similar appeal and playrate.

I think it's because Tetris is a better game. It was also released on consoles. I also think that when people call Tetris one of the best games ever, they're saying that with their experience mostly being on one of the rereleases, like Tetris DS or Puyo Puyo Tetris, which are a lot more game-y.

I voted for the church because I think over time the Republican party would just acclimate to essentially being a theocracy that doesn't value any of the positive tenants of Christianity. A Catholic rule at least has the possibility for socialism.

When I was in the seventh grade, I was a Nintendo fanboy to the highest degree. Like, as big as you could be. One day there was a kid playing his PSP in class, and I told the teacher on him. Not because he was playing a video game, or because I didn't like him, or because I was distracted, but purely because it was a PSP. The teacher confiscated the kid's PSP, and afterwards, he came over to my desk and broke all of my pencils in anger. When pressed as to why I did this, I responded "Because one less PSP being played is a victory for Nintendo".

Probably deserves lower but I'm biased because I think it's the first game story I ever got really into. I think several games in the series have much more interesting conflicts (especially the Radiance duology and Genealogy/Thracia), though the cast of FE7 is pretty endearing and it does a lot with a relatively short script.

For me personally, probably Pokemon Gold and Silver and Rock Band 3. The gen 1 Pokemon games were a global phenomenon, and somehow their followup was a massive improvement in every conceivable way. RB3 I think is a weird answer but I was super, super into Rock Band from like 2008-2012 and 3's pro instruments sounded too good to be true, but they worked basically just as perfectly as they sounded.

Twilight Princess is also this for me, but I think I was more hyped for just the concept of a Wii launch game than I was TP itself, so I'm not sure if it ranks with the others.

Both Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire were kinda weird instances where I was massively hyped and loved both games at launch in a way where I thought they lived up to the hype. And in fact, I continued thinking that for months and even years after release. It wasn't until revisiting both games and reflecting upon my experience with them compared to their predecessors years down the line that the games were finally somewhat disappointing.

I've only every Nintendo platform outside of Virtual Boy and Gameboy Light....both of which I should probably get at some point now tbh. And yes that includes every revision of their handhelds.

Sony I've had PSP, PS3, Vita, PS4, and PS4 Pro. Also PS2 but I got it used after it stopped being produced, so I got it after PSP/PS3.

Microsoft I've had two 360s (the original model and the Slim) and the original model Xbox One.

I think Dark Souls will forever be boosted by being the first Souls game to really take off

I've seen opening impressions like Elden Ring's for other games before and for some reason it doesn't strike me as something that will have the lasting impact of Dark, which I think matters a lot. I also think the more modern you get the less receptive this site will get to stuff that doesn't follow 90s game design sensibilities or exist in a legacy franchise, and even the time difference between 2011 and 2022 matters there if not a lot.
