I'm a security guard, and I work with this other guard who is in his 70's. He's a military veteran, serving over 25 years. He has told me very heroic, amazing stories and I commend him for serving his country.

With that all said, as an employee he's terrible. He doesn't like being told what to do, and a few times when I need his assistance, he straight up tells me "nope". A lot of policies at work he refuses to follow, and when upper management finds out, we both get in trouble, even though it's all his fault. He tends to not follow policies that he disagrees with...while on paper that seems respectable, his reasonings for not following those policies are stupid (I can give examples if needed)...and he will choose to maintain those beliefs out of convenience, no matter how many times he is told otherwise.

As a person he is mostly OK, but he has this superiority complex. He thinks he's better than everyone. I assume he's proud of his 25 years in the service, and that is why he feels that way, but that is just a guess.

One example of him being stubborn: he refuses to get vaccinated for covid because, according to him, "do you go to the doctor when you're not sick?" He also says "I tested negative, I don't need to get the vaccine". He's uneducated on the vaccine, and would rather believe his theories out of convenience, because he already decided he doesn't want the vaccine.

The reason I feel bad is because, on the service, he's a good guy. He cracks jokes a lot and is super charismatic. A lot of people at my job like him because they only know him on the surface, but never experienced his stubbornness. If I tell someone I dislike him, they would probably be surprised because they only know his good side. I feel like I'm backed into a corner where I don't like him, but everyone else does, so I feel like it's a "me" problem (maybe it is). I also feel like disliking him means I do not respect his time in the military.

TL:DR: He is a terrible employee, won't let anyone tell him what to do, will sometimes refuse to follow policies, causing us both to get in trouble. He is a 25-year military veteran, and maybe his experiences in the military contributed to why he is the way he is, but that is just a guess.

Have you ever disliked someone who is widely respected? Do I have a valid reason to dislike him?

i don't hate people on bikes, and i fully respect people on their bikes when i drive. i don't get pissed or anything, in fact i sometimes bike as well.

IMO if there's no bike lane, i think it's fair game to ride on the sidewalk. if there's no bike lane, 99% of the time there's just not enough room for cars AND bikes. on your bike, you have to ride on the side of the road (not even in the car lane like cars do) and you have to dodge parked cars while watching out for traffic behind you. also, making a left turn at an intersection is bullshit on a bike.

the only argument against bikes on the sidewalk is pedestrians that are walking. obviously that shit sucks, but what's the alternative?

When someone is making small talk with you, usually someone you haven't seen in years, and they bring up the possibility of meeting up again. But it's not genuine, it's just them trying to be friendly.

I went to a wedding over the weekend, and ran into these two brothers I used to know from high school. We were pretty good acquaintances but never really friends. We were basically friends by obligation because we were on the same sports team. Anyway, the three of us start making small talk, discussing our updates in life, and then the two brothers say "we definitely need to meet up, it's long overdue". My stupid ass agreed and got fed right into it.

One or two of you (out of the 10+ people reading this topic) might be thinking "maybe they were being genuine", but that is definitely not the case. We didn't exchange any contact information. Don't you think we would have done that? Anyway, while this annoys me, I don't blame the two brothers for doing this, it's just a friendly gesture when you're making small talk with someone you haven't seen in years. But I think the three of us know that we don't want to meet up with each other.

But the reason these bullshit invites really annoy me is because there are situations where I actually do want to meet up, but I can never tell if the other person is being genuine or not. So I have to play the guessing game and just assume one way or the other. This is why I wish these bullshit invites were not a normal conversation starter, because someone who is socially awkward may not be able to tell the difference.

There's an episode of The Office that makes fun this. Michael Scott is talking to some woman who is from out of town, and the woman half-heartedly invites Michael to her hometown. Little does she know, he already booked plane tickets to see her, and she was basically thinking "aw fuck". The woman was just being friendly and not really inviting him over, but Michael Scott didn't catch that social cue and assumed he was really being invited. I'm not a religious watcher of the show, so I don't remember who the character was or what episode this was, so someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

With that said, have you ever been fake invited to something? Were you able to tell it was just a bullshit invite?

thats not how any of this works. if you can walk outside of the gun free zone and buy a gun and walk back into the gun free zone with a gun, its not a gun free zone. it's like how putting up "no littering" signs doesn't prevent people from littering. there needs to be a country wide restriction on guns put in place, with teeth to punish those who do not comply. any less or anything else is ineffective and wont prevent preventable school shootings
I mean inside the buildings they are gun-free. If one other person had a gun inside the building besides the active shooter, that would be a better situation for someone to defend.

pretty much all of the mass shootings happened in gun-free zones, so that means the active shooter has a gun, but no one else does so there's no way to defend against the shooter

I don't think gun control is the solution, because, one way or another, people will find a way to obtain guns illegally. If there's a way to make guns magically disappear for everyone who isn't a police officer or using it for essential work, then yes I'm fine with gun control being the solution. But otherwise I think bringing a gun to an environment where people are unarmed is the problem.

With that said, we live in a world where, as men, we just have to know. We have to be fun, charming, have zero personality flaws in order to be successful with women. And a bunch of other rando's in the recent primaries in both parties have been in the background a few times
Let me rephrase. No one in the primary who loses the first time will win under most circumstances. Sure, those candidates you mentioned tried running again. Did they win? No.

Is this a surprise? Most politicians don't bother running a second time when they lose the first time. When they lose once, their political career is badly impacted forever. The one and only exception would be Nixon, but he also tried to fake his way into a re-election. Who knows what he did to get elected from the start.

1. Murder. The perp knew that when he pulled the trigger it would kill the victim.
2. Depends, did the guy just knock him out with a punch and then walk away, and the victim died? Manslaughter. Is the perp a trained fighter? Probably murder. Did the perp continue to pound the victim to a pulp after the fight was over? Murder.
3. Same as above, doesn't really matter if they knew each other.
  1. It's not premeditated though. I thought murder meant it had to be planned ahead of time. In this case, the man did not plan on killing the guy until he was riled up by the argument. Not a law expert or anything, just trying to understand better.
  2. For point #3, why would previous rapport not matter? That would mean the killing could be premeditated.

Obviously this is the very simplified version, but manslaughter generally applies when the death was not intentional while murder applies when there was a clear intent to kill
there is such thing as voluntary manslaughter though

Machete posted...
They all sound like 2nd degree murder, #2 could be voluntary manslaughter depending on details not covered in scenario (did he beat the dude and the dude happened to die or did he beat him woth the intention of killing him? Did he stop when he realized the guy was in trouble and did he call 911/try and save/help him at that point? Etc.). Scenario #3 is too vague to determine premeditation. More evidence of it would be required to up it to 1st degree.
why would #1 be murder and #2 be manslaughter? the only difference is the gun. is it because #1 is more severe?

anyone can correct me if im wrong, but determining manslaughter vs murder is not by severity. just because it's more severe, does not mean it gets bumped up to murder. murder is premeditated, manslaughter is not. sure, the guy beat the other one up, and he wanted to harm that person, but he did not previously know the person and did not plan on killing him prior to being riled up by the argument

So what did you get fired for?
Not the first time someone asked me that on here. Let's go through the list.

  • Used to work in retail. An irate customer called me the N word. Hell no!! I told that customer to fuck off. Got fired. I was insulted that my job didn't have my back on that one.
  • When I worked at a hotel, the CEO/owner was treating me like shit, saying my work was "garbage", yelling at the top of his lungs. Told him "don't talk to me that way". I didn't care that he owned the building I was working at, you don't talk to me that way. Fired.
  • Used to have this really shitty boss that assigned me her subordinate's work, even though I was behind on my own work. I emailed and spoke with her nicely about it many times, but she always ignored me. Finally I lost my cool and told her "that's not my fucking job". Got fired because her feelings were hurt.

As someone who has gotten fired many times, I happen to know a lot about the termination process.

Do you guys agree with my new work policy?

Think about it. They:

  • Bring you in a small room
  • Explain what you did wrong
  • Break the news that you're fired, or rather, "we have to let you go"
  • One of the managers is packing up all of your shit while this is happening
  • The person is almost never mentioned again. You might hear they are "no longer with the company", but you never hear WHY they were fired.

For the most part, I agree with the termination policy, but I would change 2 things:

  1. A manager shouldn't be the one packing up your shit, YOU should. A manager packing it up draws attention from coworkers. They know what happened when they see someone clearing out a desk.
  2. All terminations should be public. If John Smith gets fired for too many No Call No Shows, that sould be revealed to the whole department. I see too many people get fired for the same reasons. Knowing that person X got fired for reason Y, that would prevent others from making the same mistake.

I know I'm gonna hear the same argument from people. "That's illegal" or "you're gonna be sued". Remember: Legality is not a good measurement of ethics. Just because something is legal, doesn't mean it's ethical. Same for illegal and unethical.

Believe me, if I ever became CEO of a company, I would make this happen. In fact, I would have an open Wiki for coworkers can look up all employees and why they were fired.

What do you guys think?
