Well The Northman is kind of interesting because it bombed but paradoxically also beat its (low) expectations, which makes me wonder if it could have been a modest success in a non-pandemic world with its original $65 million budget pre-covid increasing it. 2018 and 2019 saw the two highest numbers of theatrical releases per year on record, we are now at less than half that number of films releasing per year since the pandemic. We will have to see long term if we return to the more diverse slates. I hope so! You are right though this is a discussion for a different topic.

This is a totally different argument but it isn't like the Oscars pick different kinds of movies now, it's that the movies that they pick aren't making as much money as franchise tentpoles with 200 million dollar marketing budgets. It isn't like West Side Story, Dune, Nightmare Alley, and more aren't some inaccessible films. It's that mainstream audiences have been hoodwinked into thinking that the only movies they should go see are franchises like Marvel movies and Jurassic Parks and Stars Wars and the like. I mean Schindler's List was a top 12 highest grossing movie domestically when it was out. That's no less "artsy" than the wide majority of films being nominated today. It isn't like the Academy is nominating like Holy Motors or Vitalina Varela for Best Picture. The most surprising thing they did recently was nominate Drive My Car which is mostly just a drama about a guy dealing with the guilt of his wife dying and there are a lot of scenes where he's directing a play. It's also like one of the most critically acclaimed films in years. If anything the more questionable nominees are the perceived crowd pleasers like King Richard, CODA, Belfast, Don't Look Up (using last year as an example) while the films closer to be thought of as "artsy" are generally reviewed as some of the best films of the year.

I think those three are bad examples - Dune actually was a big success and outperformed a competing Marvel film. Nightmare Alley bombed in cinemas but did frankly bananas numbers on streaming, and West Side Story had a terrible opening but a long tail - its clear that the issue these films face, rather than franchises, is the pandemic. The audience is still there, they just werent going to the cinema opening night. There are signs of recovery too, look at how well Everything, Everywhere, All at Once has done. I suspect that if you didnt have franchises, people just wouldnt have been going to the cinema at all. The issue is that the studios are so terrified of taking a loss on anything upfront they arent willing to invest in a more diverse slate of films that will get more people going to the cinema in the longer term.

I do agree though that if anything the Oscars have gone the other way, there are more mainstream accessible films getting nominated not less. However Ill defend CODA, that film was an absolute delight, and even King Richard is better written and acted than the typical Oscar biopic. I think since they changed the voting method a few years ago the Oscars have actually been okay.

Gonna predict Tucker and Dale again. Can also see Train to Busan.

I do consider the dialogue in RotS to be good on the whole. Lines like Unlimited POWAH are effectively conveying what they are trying to do. They just cant all be winners. Tbh I think if it were in service of a better romance that scene you posted would not be that bad anyway.

So my reason for this poll was thinking about the original reception of Attack of the Clones and how many, many people were touting it as a huge improvement over The Phantom Menace for a few months after release. It infamously got five stars from Empire which they later retracted. This poll seems to bear that out - while TPM always would have been ahead, it would have been much, much closer with AotC back then. We must also consider that questions like this bias people towards always having picked the right option even if they changed their minds in reality so the true number of switchers is likely even higher.

I distinctly remember loving TPM at release and while it has many flaws, even now I dont consider it to be that bad. Its mediocre at worst. AotC I didnt like even at the time, its one of the first films I remember watching and not thinking its very good even as a kid. I guess the change in opinion has mainly come from older fans, Im curious about why so many have changed their minds on this subject.

Unlimited Power definitely was, only a Sith deals in absolutes, every line of dialogue in the opera scene I was on YTMND in 2005 that whole movie was memes.

Speaking of opera, my point was not that it is on the same quality level as (great) opera but that its speaking in the same way eg high emotional concepts rather than logic or complexity. That Anakin/Padme exchange (though not good) is an example of this as its purely focused on making the emotion of the characters explicit.

Theres a lot of confusion about the memes here. Generally speaking, the memes dont happen because the lines are bad, unless its truly remarkable eg the sand line. The memes happen because the lines are GOOD. This is why therere almost no Episode I/II memes but almost everything in Episode III was not only memed, but became a meme straight away. Because the dialogue is working on the level of memorability and emotion of something like an opera, which is what the film intended. The purpose is not to have extremely witty, clever dialogue but rather dialogue that works on that simple, effective, dramatic level which is why Episode IIIs dialogue is good, actually.

The Prequel Trilogy dialogue having 'soul' or whatever is absolute revisionist history. The memes sprung up because the dialogue was bad, the movies are now old enough to be nostalgic (despite being very bad), and everyone in our generation has watched it. Again, no. This is actually the revisionist take. Episode III was well-received at release, getting an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 7.6 on IMDB and an A- Cinemascore. These are solid grades for any mainstream blockbuster. The general vibe in the fandom was positive for a long time. It was after that there was a bit of a turn when Star Wars was in the semi-wilderness years pre-Disney, and that was more just lumping it in with the other two prequels. Theres a reason, like I said, that Episode III has so many more memes than I or II., because it connected more with audiences on that memorable level.

Lets put it this way: If what you were saying was accurate, people would be memeing Michael Bays Transformers as those were more popular than Star Wars at the time and all the dialogue is absolutely dreadful.

I will say though, to a lesser extent Episodes I and II were well-received at release, need to make a post in another topic about that.

Easily The Last Jedi. Rogue One and Solo are kind of different things.

This topic is far too generous so far.

Hard, hard, hard disagree on that but well get to it. One point in particular stands out.

What I can say aside from that though is that Get Out works without the satire, its very much a type of horror thats been done before and done well. The satire just elevates it further.

Oh by the way, I think Get Out will win. Its been very conspicuous by its absence from all the discussions and predictions, and is the film that has both the mass appeal and the artistic appeal to be so far ahead of everything else.

Im really looking forward to seeing what bad opinions drop next! My 17-30 have all gone and only one of my top 12 is out. It is just my 16 left from below that. I am quite happy whatever happens.

Under the Shadow is terrific and is a better Iranian-but-not-really-Iranian horror film than A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Unfortunately never really caught on outside of European film circles.

I think that makes sense! The only thing Ill say is that having a message at your core and having fun as your main goal are in no way mutually exclusive. All three of those films I mentioned have messages. I think nearly every film on this list is about something regardless of if its mainly trying to be fun or not, thats the great thing about the horror genre.

Cinematography. Among others that was just the first thing that came to mind.

More to the original point I think fun was referring to the more lighthearted tone, which Ready or Not, Tucker and Dale, and Cabin in the Woods have. You can also describe fun as the experience of watching it - Train to Busan and A Quiet Place have serious tones but are real thrill rides. Then you have stuff like the Peele films which are satire and theres fun in that.

Basically, I think that Suprak means lighthearted horror films and Inviso mainly doesnt like Aster, Eggers and possibly Kent.

The Last Jedi is one of the best Star Wars films and one of the better blockbusters from recent years.

I was hoping my prior statement of keeping predicting Happy Death Day would count.

Just one? Surely Ready or Not, Tucker and Dale and Cabin in the Woods all qualify as fun.

Its a flawed distinction though. Nothing stops a film from dealing with serious issues snd also being a fun time, the Peele movies embody this best for me. Horror has always had social commentary, thats nothing new, and it doesnt stop the films from being enjoyable either.
