I mean, the going rule is to never trust youtube videos, because it's standard practice to just edit out all the losses and then have a thumbnail bragging about 100% winrate.

I was watching this on twitch, though, and not just on nohands' stream (a few other high legend people were also streaming the deck, and I saw a few other streamers queueing into the deck), so it seems to be a real thing.

So I've been watching Nohandsgamer play belly druid at top 5 legend to pretty good success. Seems to be at least even with the rogue decks at the moment. I've been messing around with a budget version myself (replacing abominable lieutennants with runnaway blackwings--not sure I believe in abominable lieutennant enough just yet to actually craft it).

Garrotes with spell damage was an admitted unintended glitch and they left it alone.
I thought that got fixed?

Specifically, Talented Arcanist used to work with every bleed if you drew a bunch in a row, even though it's only supposed to boost the spell damage of the "next spell". They fixed that bug.

Hero power mage seemed like garbage.

But I messed around with big spell mage and that seemed ok. Specifically Arcane Overflow on 5 (kill something, make a 5/5ish size minion) into Grey Sage Parrot on 6 to copy Arcane Overflow is some Paladin level midrange pile of stats BS.

Lol
The current woirld championships? Yeah, see, 75% of the decks at the world championships are combo decks, cause they decied to do no balance changes before the world championships

And it turns out face hunter with turn 1 Trogg into turn 2 buff spell is good against combo decks that spend their early turns casting spells to draw cards.

If you were to tell me during united in stormwind that freeze shaman would be meta in the very next set, I would have laughed.

Usually decks like these have some amount of buildup, periods of releasing some support but not enough support for a few sets in a row before they are good enough.

When the legendary was leaked during spoiler season, everyone was like "uhh...does Shaman even have a single freeze spell in standard?"

Well, couple days of data now, we can take a look at how the death knights are performing. Drawn winrate relative to other cards in the decks that are running them.

1. Kurtrus: about 8% higher drawn winrate than his deck (median drawn winrate 59%, Kurtrus drawn winrate 67%).
https://hsreplay.net/decks/kz2qcnMFib4JG1tNy4oQnc/#gameType=RANKED_STANDARD

2. Scabbs--I'm going to skip over the most played Rogue list, cause it's thief rogue, which I'm assuming won't be the most played list in a week or two. Second most played is quest rogue, where he's good. About 3% above the deck median. (Deck median of 61% drawn winrate, Scabbs 64%).
https://hsreplay.net/decks/kh9V8nLs2uUi6WEdOHo3Og/#gameType=RANKED_STANDARD

3. Cariel, about 2% higher than the median drawn winrate in Libram Paladin. Up to 5% above the deck median in some decks with less antisynergy, but Libram is the most played paladin deck for now.
https://hsreplay.net/decks/kXaU1gy8t2DSIZ3lXzZbYd/#gameType=RANKED_STANDARD

4. Bru'kan, about 2% higher than the median drawn winrate in Freeze Shaman. Median drawn winrate of the deck is 57%, Bru'kan is 59%. Still enough to be highest drawn winrate in the deck.

5. Tamsin--I'm assuming Owl Warlock will just drop off in popularity--I already see top 100 legend streamers say that they're not playing against it anymore, and HSReplay released a "best decks to climb with" that had quest warlock and not owl warlock. In owl decks she's 2% above the median for the deck, but slotted into quest handlock she's...roughly at the median for the deck (deck median 66%, tamsin 66%) and not even being run in the turbo fatigue questlocks or zoolocks.
https://hsreplay.net/decks/f6a6HTokOgXjtXRp0utzB/#gameType=RANKED_STANDARD

6. Tavish: about 2% higher drawn winrate than his deck (median drawn winrate 57%. Tavish drawn winrate 59%). Not actually run in the most played hunter deck, though (face hunter).
https://hsreplay.net/decks/9Y2zZWGPJ9QKyAn6nJkfhh/#gameType=RANKED_STANDARD

7. Guff: roughly median drawn winrate in his deck (median drawn winrate is 59%, his drawn winrate is 59%)
https://hsreplay.net/decks/O6zZAqLBJ8Xr6uDtefyxgg/#gameType=RANKED_STANDARD

8. Xyrella: roughly median drawn winrate in the deck that seems designed for her (big resurrect deathrattle priest). Deck median 64%, Xyrella 64%.
https://hsreplay.net/decks/NvplEz1P8HBWTKjwXv5aEb/#gameType=RANKED_STANDARD

9. Dawngrasp--I'm not going to count big spell mage as a real deck, cause lol it is flopping hard (Dawngrasp is the best card in that deck, but the deck has a 40% winrate). But I will count No Minion Mage as a maybe still playable deck that runs dawngrasp, and dawngrasp is roughly average in the deck (median drawn winrate for the deck 55%, Dawngrasp drawn winrate 55%):
https://hsreplay.net/decks/65dQFnEKgW56mbt4kFp0ee/#gameType=RANKED_STANDARD

10. Rokarra: data is really spotty, probably due to small sample size. Quest warriors are not running her. There's a control warrior list where she's maybe 1% above median for the deck, but also a Captain Galvanger charge warrior deck where she has the lowest drawn winrate, about 3% below the median for the deck. Might not be last in a month or so when there have been a couple waves of buffs and nerfs, but meta's pretty hostile for now.

But I think the way that Trogg works is he summons after the spell resolves so maybe it's not THAT strong. Like if you deal 3 damage to a 4/4 Trogg then the Priest would summon a 4/1 Trogg.
That's sounds correct, yes.

In general if the opponent has removal to point at Trogg, Trogg's not going to do much.

Trogg mostly punishes people who have non-removal spells they want to play early. Quests, coin, incanter's flow, overgrowth, nature studies, etc. Only takes 3 spells to get a full board of troggs.

for a bit of perspective among the card dump...most upvoted cards in the CompetitiveHS subreddit were...

  1. Windchill (Shaman, 1 mana freeze a minion, draw a card)
  2. Sleetbreaker (Shaman, 2 mana 3/2 elemental add a windchill to your hand)
  3. Frostbite (Shaman, 2 mana deal 3 damage, honourable kill your opponent's next spell costs (2) more).
Think I agree with these as the top 3. All 3 frost shaman spells are nutty. 1 mana draw a card is good, so adding a freeze onto it is great. 2 mana deal 3 is good (I'm literally running Darkbomb in wild right now) and this is Darkbomb that is also Loatheb that can also last for more than one turn if they don't cast a spell.

I think the two spells for sure are going to be run in wild. Not sure about the elemental that generates the windchill spell, might be annoying with shuderwock filling your hand with windchills.

4. Iceblood Garrison (2 mana Warrior, deal 1 damage to all minions for the next 3 turns)
5. Flanking Maneuver (4 mana DH, summon a 4/2 with rush, if it dies summon a second one)

Good clears. The DH card might be a little overrated cause DH just gets the best board clears--maybe you can't find space for that one when you have immolation aura. It is a one-sided clear, though, which is rare for DH.

6. Pride Seeker (Druid 3 mana 2/4, your next choose 1 card costs 2 less).

So...yeah, this card is actually a little scary. Cause you can use this before celestial alignment, then Alignment, and immediately cast Nourish for 0 to gain 2 mana crystals.

This is the difference between wild Celestial Alignment Druid and Standard Celestial Alignment Druid, by the way--the ability to immediately get mana the turn you cast Celestial Alignment. This makes Celestial Alignment way more dangerous in standard.

7. Contraband Stash: (Rogue 5 mana, replay 5 cards from other classes you've played this game)

(People don't think it's competitive, but even on the competitive subreddit, people love thief rogue enough that it's generating excitement).

8. Korrak, the bloodrager (Neutral 4 mana 3/5 deathrattle if this was not honourably killed resummon it)

(Some silly stuff can be done with this. Rogue can play that 2/2 that transforms into a deathrattle on 2, play the "your deathrattles trigger twice for the next three turns" on turn 3, Play Sketchy Information and draw this triggering the deathrattle twice, summoning two 3/5s on turn 4, and then turn 5 play this the 2/2 transofmrs into a 2/2 copy of it with rush, attacks in and dies generating two more 3/5s, you've basically got a full board of 3/5s at this point).

9. Stonehearth Vindicator (Paladin 3 mana 3/1 draw a spell that costs 3 or less, set its cost to (0) this turn)

In the right deck, just really good draws. Paladin in the current standard the best thing they can get off of this is Hand of A'dal, which is the same total mana as drawing and casting with Knight of Anointment but it's a 3/1 instead of a 1/1. However, Paladin did get a new 3 mana buff this set, which might be worth running, so maybe you'll be able to get the full 3 mana discount).

10. Bless (2 mana priest spell, give a minion +2 health, then set it's attack to be equal to its health)

Inner fire was currently not in standard. Well, now it is, and it's pretty scary. Even a control priest who doesn't put inner fire into their deck might randomly generate one off of their many, many discovers. That 3/7 taunt they have in play? Might hit you in the face for 9. 18 if they choose to put Battlegrounds Battlemaster into their deck.

So...card dump is here.

I don't know if irondeep trogg is going to be good, but if it is good, it's going to be really coin-flippy in a very literal way.

If you go first against a quest deck, when they play their quest, you get 2 troggs, and then when they play their coin you get 4 troggs.

BUT if you go second...nothing happens. They don't have a coin, they already played their quest, the trogg is just a 1 mana 1/2.

If this becomes the meta, it's going to be really annoying, cause literally games will be decided by who goes first.

Thats neat but it relies on your opponent having a board that expendable performers can abuse. and whatever board state they have left doesnt have a taunt.

A single Scrapyard Colossus blocks it, for example. The new Hunter beast blocks it too.

It also isnt a full OTK like LSDH so idk how effective it is. Battlecry and in most general cases the hero power is pretty good though so theres a reason why hes third
Yeah, I mean, in general the hero power is savage roar, except instead of giving attack to your minions, it gives attack to your hero, so you can convert rush minions into 2 face damage per rush minion (but doing so normally costs 1 mana per attack, can be reduced to 0 mana with the 2/3).

Ulduum quest hunter had something pretty similar, except it did just give attack to your minions, and couldn't be used if you had an empty board. (I used to play Ulduum quest hunter a lot back in the descent of dragons meta--infinite savage roars was actually really strong inevitability, just keep making boards of 1/1s until they can't clear).

Also worth noting, we are giving attack to the DH hero here, so like...lifesteal weapon is a thing that probably goes in this deck.

Like...TBH, you probably don't really need to get fancy with an OTK, just have aldrachi warblades equipped, use that spell that summons three 1/1s with rush, which will allow you to hero power four times raising your attack to 10, you deal 10 damage to the enemy hero and gain 10 life. Do that a couple times and you should win.

My main concern is how much do you really want to build around a hero card when it's a 1-of in the deck. Like...if you knew you were going to draw Kurtrus reliably, we could add in cards like Bladed Lady (1 mana 6/6 rush if you have 6 or more attack). But this seems like a dead card if you don't draw Kurtrus. Likewise for aldrachi warblades--great with kurtrus, meh without kurtrus.

I feel like there is a good way to abuse Kurtus.
There is.

Felfire Deadeye lowers his hero power to 0 mana.

Expendable performers gives you 12 rush minions (12 not 14 cause you need board space for Felfire Deadeye).

So...12 rush damage into enemy taunts, and your hero gains 26 attack.

Hero powers are all toned down because they learned from the past to not give them infinite value. I think your evaluations on them are very unfair.
I mean, yes, for most of these heroes I evaluate them based on the battlecry, and mostly ignore the hero powers because most of the hero powers aren't noteworthy. But I still check the hero power to be thorough and make sure I'm not missing something. (A couple of the hero powers are genuinely big upgrades, like priest and demon hunter).

But yes, for Cariel and Rokara, how I evaluate those two cards is almost entirely based on the battlecries and the 5 armourgain.

Rokara is far better than people think. People just can't read.
What exactly is the thing that people are missing about Rokara? Cause the math I've done sure seems to suggest she's kinda so-so.

Hero power is nothing too special--basically shadowform. Occasionally you'll get an honourable kill from it and gain 4 armour.

Weapon can be an interesting tech against Paladin with giant minions--they might give you lethal by making a minion too big. But against most decks you won't hit minions bigger than 5/5 or so. And if you're attacking 5/5s, it's more like getting extra charges of your weapon that go face.

I'd compare the new Rokara to a corrupted (but not discounted) Libram of Judgment. Libram of Judgment has some healing (lifesteal) and 3 charges of a 5 attack weapon. Rokara has some healing (5 armour battlecry, and occasionally the hero power will give armour) and 2 charges of a 5 attack weapon, but you can double-dip some of those weapon charges by attacking a minion).

I don't think that's unplayable, (Libram of Judgment occasionally sees play). But I definitely don't think it's auto-include.

Also worth noting Rokara has anti-synergy with the quest, cause the quest will overwrite the weapon after one turn.

UltimaterializerX posted...
People not ranking Cariel 1 or 2 do not understand how thoroughly and completely broken permanent half damage is, even rounded up. She legitimately cannot ever die.

She's good but...being incompatible with two of the Librams (cause they generate weapons which would overwrite her weapon) is rough. And the hero power...does have anti-synergy with some of the decks that want to run her for the half-damage effect (like...that hero power isn't going to do much in a spell heavy control deck). Lategame for libram decks is often a hand full of librams of wisdom being played on silver hand recruits, so not having a target for libram of wisdom cause her hero power doesn't make a minion is a concern.

I'm honestly not sure where to evaluate her myself. The weapon rules, but I think several paladin decks won't want her. So like...probably really good in the paladin decks that do want her, but not worth running in other paladin decks?

Bru'kan is actually the first hero revealed where the hero power is similar in power to the death knights from KFT (most of the hero powers are like...draw a card).

I wasn't actually expecting them to print a hero like this. KFT had a problem where whoever drew their hero card first in a mirror match tended to win, cause they would get more hero powers, and thus drown the opponent in value. Since then they've been very careful with hero powers, usually making fairly minor hero powers. Guess they made an exception for Bru'kan.

Definitely a strange card.

Freezes all minions, not just enemy minions, so it's not a frost nova.

Also I'm guessing you can't cast it at all unless you have a damaged minion to target, so it's really not a frost nova.

Still has the potential to do quite a bit for 3 mana.

Shocked it took them as long as it did to print a card like Guff.
Expanding mana crystals above 10? Yeah, it's really felt like something druid should do for a long time.

One of the things that makes me not excited about druid, when in magic the gathering I love decks with ramp, is that druid fundamentally is like...trying to out-tempo the opponent. If a control warrior gets to 10 mana, druid who hit 10 mana on turn 7 is now royally screwed and basically can't win.

Letting druid get to more than 10 mana feels like an obvious way they could build up a longer game value plan, without breaking their cards for the tempo-style hearthstone ramp decks.

I expected them to do +1 max mana first though (letting you get to 12 mana crystals if you draw both copies). I didn't expect them to go all the way to 20 max mana crystals. Happy they did.

Is there a bug with battlegrounds damage? I just lost a game where I had 18 health and didn't lose twice in a row, and then suddenly I had 4 damage and lost the next round and was out. I had another game a couple nights ago where I hit someone for 16 and knocked them out and then they took 0 damage and continued on with the game.
Isn't that something to do with the Diablo event, where he can kill multiple players at once or something?

I don't know exactly how it works, haven't played the event at all, but here's a video of a lobby going from 5 players to 1 in a single round, so I assume there must be some multi-kill mechanic:

They fixed the spell damage bug a while back (where you could play talented arcanist and it would apply to all the bleeds).

The bleeds are still meant to work with ordinary spell damage.

Not a deck I see a ton of at my pleb MMR, but by all reports it was basically the best deck in high legend, so I'm not at all surprised by the nerf.

Quest mage nerf is a surprise.

...but not one I'm sad about. When I beat that deck it's stuff like "I do nothing but ramp for the first 5 turns, play survival of the fittest, then play clowns. Since these are the first minions I've played the quest mage still hasn't finished the quest and so I win". Or like "I'm playing a minion deck, drop crossroads watch post, and they can't kill it, and so I win." And if I don't do something like that, just play a normal minion curve with no watchposts I get absolutely dumpstered and they never fall below 17 health. Just not a deck I find fun to play against, whether I'm winning or losing.

I finally figured out my problem with Vicious Syndicate. If the data says something is bad, they just assume it is.

I dont care what data says - Celestial Alignment and Anacondra Druid are terrible for the game.
I mean, yeah, if there's a deck that instantly wins the game on turn 8, but they tend to die to aggro, and 70% of the people on ladder are playing aggro, VS will say that it's a tier 4 45% winrate deck.

But these tend to be the decks I really don't like. Cause I like homebrewing my own variants of decks, and usually my homebrew versions start with an aggro deck and make it a more midrange/greedy and value oriented, and then my midrange versions auto lose to whatever the flavour of the month combo deck is (Tickatus Warlock, Quest Mage, Garotte rogue, Celestial Alignment Druid, etc).

Speaking of which, nerfs are coming to a bunch of the big combo decks, and also Razormane Battleguard, also Renew is going back to 1 mana:

https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/hearthstone/t/balance-patch-next-week/74666

Razormane Battleguard
Old - 2/2/3
New - 2/2/2
Arcanist Dawngrasp (Mage Questline Reward)
Old - +3 spell damage
New: +2 spell damage
Garrote
Old - Shuffle 3 bleeds
New: Shuffle 2 bleeds
Renew
Old: 2 mana
New: 1 mana

Obviously a hotfix is coming, 0 mana 6/6s weren't intended.

But...wow, wild is now 35%-40% druid and rising according to the VS live report.

Mr Smite + Rockbiter + Windfury = 18 damage on turn 10

Not quite a GG combo but I could see this card being changed to "Your other pirates have charge".
I mean...reckless rocketeer + rockbiter + windfury = 16 damage on turn 10.

I could totally see Mr Smite getting nerfed, but I doubt it'll be because of a 10 mana combo with windfury and rockbiter weapon.

OK, beat my own record again; five juggernauts (with the sixth rokarra in my hand, but my opponent died).

Understandable. The whole quest meta is kinda fucked TBH. Basically simplified wild down to 3 decks. And every deck in standard needs to either have a quest, or have some lategame plan with similar power to a quest (like token druid summoning multiple greyboughs). Or just a lot of face damage like face hunter and garotte rogue.

I will say that I don't expect this meta to last forever. Either Blizzard will finally nerf more quests, or they'll print cards that make people not want to run the quests anymore. So maybe check in a few weeks after the next expansion? (Not the mini-set, I don't expect the mini-set to change anything).

A 3/1 rush for 1 by itself is stupid strong. Do you know how many times I've gotten pissed off by that stupid Fel Rattler in DH? And that thing costs 4. (And does more.)
Fel rattler costs 3, but yeah, it's good because it's a 3 mana swipe (that can't go face).

This is 1 mana holy smite. Still good.

Thoughts on the cards

DH

Crow's nest lookout: 3 mana 2/2 deal damage to the left and rightmost minion. Worth noting, if the enemy has one minion, this'll hit twice. But...TBH, as long as minionless decks like quest mage and big warrior remain popular, I can't see running this.

Need for Greed: If it works the way I think it works (the mana gets set to 3 even if you've discounted the card with the quest or skull of gul'dan) I don't think this will be that great. But still, it's tradeable. Quest probably swaps this in in exchange for some of the other tradeable cards that the deck literally only trades and never plays.

druid

Druid of the Reef: It's very good.

hunter

Monstrous Parrot: looks like garbage. And I say that as someone who still occasionally plays a meme deck in wild casual built around Unearthed Raptor. This still has the 3/4 statline of unearthed raptor, but it costs 4.

Defias Blastfisher: So...back in the stone age when mech mage was a thing, they did 4 random damage on a 4 mana 5/4. This with one beast is 4 random damage on a 5 mana 3/2. Doesn't go into any existing decks. I guess the idea is that you put this into a deck with Rodent Nest, and then you play rodent nest on 4, pop it, then play this and deal 12 random damage. Yeah, that's a game winning blowout if it happens. Sounds like a very high RNG deck, though.

mage

Grey Sage Parrot: Big spell mage support. In another era, this would be scary. Right now, I don't think existing mage decks want it.

paladin

Sunwing Squawker: I mean, sure, put this into libram paladin maybe? Most of the time is a yeti that adds a libram of wisdom to your hand. Occasionally will draw a card instead, or summon an 8/8 divine shield taunt. The one thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't save you from a bad draw. Didn't draw libram of wisdom or hand of a'dal? LOL, sucks to be you, here's a minion that does nothing. Not sure this makes the cut.

priest

Defias Leper: This is a big deal for wild shadow priest, since it already runs patches the pirate, and was using bad pirates to pull it out. Now it can run good pirates.

Amulet of the Undying: Gross, big priest support. That said, don't think this matters too much in wild. Scrapyard Colossus isn't usually the best res to get off of your res effects anyway; you'd rather grab blood of G'huun. Probably relevant in standard, though, where priests run lightshower elemental, and Taelan Fordring.

rogue

Blackwater Cutlass: 1 mana 2/2 weapon looks a little bit frightening to me, but...I guess 2 mana 2/2 weapons have been historically pretty weak even with upsides, and if there's a class where it could make sense it's rogue, since the weapon shuts down rogue hero powers, doesn't play nice with the existing "weapon rogue" archetype.

shaman

Brilliant Macaw: Doesn't say "this turn", which is a big deal. But...I don't think it has very good targets in standard. In wild it can replicate Zephrys, Reno Jackson, and Shudderwork. In standard...most of shaman's battlecry cards already have very good stats these days. 2 mana 2/2s. 5 mana 5/6s. Seems like a card for wild reno shaman.

warlock

Shadowblade Slinger: so...most warlocks have moved on from the self damage plan, and are now mostly doing a handlock plan. This maybe pushes them back towards the self-damage plan.

Wicked Shipment: Lost in the jungle, but it's imps. Zoo hasn't shown signs of life in ages, though.

Warrior

Man the cannons: 2 mana swipe, although only 3 damage to the primary target, and 1 damage to your minions too, not just enemy minions. But...still excellent into Druid, 3 is a good number for taking out key targets, and they often have a bunch of 2/1s.

Defias Cannoneer: I've seen the people hyping that this spells doom for wild. I...think it's overhyped. Something that was mentioned on the state of wild podcast is that you basically want to cut all 3 and 4 mana pirates (except for southsea captain). You want to run basically all 1 cost pirates, because in the current meta, completing the quest fast is a big deal. Quest Warrior can beat Quest Hunter, but they do so by completing the quest first. This new card, Defias Cannoneer, is a 3 drop, and you don't even necessarily want to play it on turn 3--only if you've already got a weapon equipped. It will often wait for turn 4 or 5 for after you equip a weapon. The wild VS list still has one 3-drop spider tank pirate left in the list, so maybe this could sub in for stormwind freebooter. But Stormwind Freebooter is a lot better on turn 3 when you don't have a weapon yet. This by comparison is better once you have a weapon. Overall...maybe it replaces Stormwind Freebooter, but I don't think this moves the needle very much for wild. Watch out to see if they release another 1 drop pirate, though. It could be a 1 mana 1/1 with no text, and it might get run in wild pirate warrior just to complete the quest faster.

Golakka Glutton: Who would want to tech against beasts this badly? Maybe blizzard is worried the parrot cycle will be too good? But...3 mana tribe tech cards don't have a good history. Looking at Dragonslayer here, which even if the opponent didn't run dragons at least it was a 4/3. This is a 3 mana 2/3 if the opponent doesn't have beasts.
