Kherson mayor indicates the city has fallen
From CNN's Nick Paton Walsh and Tim Lister

The mayor of the Ukrainian city of Kherson Ihor Kolykhaiev has said that the Ukrainian military is no longer in the city and that its inhabitants must now carry out the instructions of armed people who came to the citys administration indicating that the city has now fallen under Russian control.

The announcement on his Facebook page follows several days of pressure on Kherson by Russian forces who had surrounded the city.

Kherson is a strategically important city on an inlet from the Black Sea with a population of nearly 300,000. On Wednesday in Kyiv, the mayor had disputed Russian claims of control saying Ukrainian forces were still fighting in parts of the city. The new posting said Ukrainian forces had left.

The mayor also told the New York Times in an interview that a group of about 10 armed Russian officers, including the commander of forces attacking the city, entered the city hall building Wednesday. He said he was informed by the Russian officers that they were planning to set up a new administration similar to those in two Russian-backed separatist enclaves in eastern Ukraine, according to the NY Times interview.

What this means: If Kherson is now under Russian control, it would be a significant moment in the conflict, as it would mark the first major city seized by Russian forces.

Late Wednesday, Hennady Lahuta, the head of Kherson regional administration, issued a message saying: I ask everyone who is not at home now, or who is planning to go outside, not to do so. The occupiers are in all areas of the city and are very dangerous.

Without saying explicitly that the Russians controlled the city, mayor Kolykhaiev said on Wednesday night that there were armed visitors in the city executive committee today.

"The team and I are peaceful people, we had no weapons, there was no aggression from our side."

I didn't make any promises to them. I just have nothing to promise. I'm only interested in the normal life of our city! I just asked not to shoot people.

In his Facebook message, he went on to say, We do not have Armed Forces in the city, only civilians and people who want to LIVE here!

Kolykhaiev said that there were now new rules in the city, which included a curfew and restrictions on transport in and out of the city.

He said that another rule was that Pedestrians walk one by one, maximum two. Dont provoke the military.

He finished: Let it be for now. The flag above us is Ukrainian. And in order to keep it the same, these requirements will have to be met. I can't offer anything else.

I'm concerned that in the event of a Russian withdrawal, all sanctions will be immediately dropped.

Make no mistake, if this fails Russia will just do it again in a few years (in Ukraine or elsewhere). Sanctions should continue until there's a complete regime change.
I think they should continue indefinitely. Until the entity known as Russia is no more. It's name forever a stain on history.

I'm quite impressed how well Ukraine is doing.

We may actually be seeing a situation where Russia has doomed itself. It's expending a lot of military on an unimportant target, demoralized it's entire military, polarized it's civilians to a renewed hatred of the government.
If the world doesn't just suddenly forgive Russia when Putin dies and the invasion is abruptly called off, I think all of Russia might just disappear.

Define "win" in that scenario.

If Russia suffers 10 to 1 losses when they have the better equipped and better trained military, the Russian Generals will take Putin behind the woodshed and put two in his head.
Putin is untouchable. He'll kill his generals instead for failing.
But as long as they take Kyiv, the loss of life doesn't matter. They can always get more soldiers. It's the loss of equipment that is the problem. And they seem to be using their older equipment. Probably saving the new stuff for Nato.
Otherwise, why haven't they deployed the microwave emitter just as an example? Wipe out the defense force in one shot and leave infrastructure intact.

Yaryna Arieva and her partner, Sviatoslav Fursin, rushed to tie the knot with the sound of air raid sirens ringing in their ears.
"That was very scary," Arieva told CNN Thursday. "It's the happiest moment of your life, and you go out, and you hear that."
The couple had planned to get married on May 6 and celebrate at a restaurant with a "very, very cute terrace" overlooking the Dnieper River, said 21-year-old Arieva "Just us and the river and beautiful lights."
They don't know what the future will bring but they're determined to stay and fight. After their wedding, the couple prepared to go to the local Territorial Defense Center to join efforts to help defend the country.

A brand new couple, with all the men being drafted today, I imagine they want the chance to live and die together instead.

Basically need them to fall apart on their own like East Germany. Cut them off from everything.

But we are too chicken to do that. It might raise gas prices and hurt people's precious SUVs. Sacrifice for the good of the world isn't a thing anymore as covid already proved.

Putin threatens "those who may be tempted to intervene" in Russia's military action

After Russian President Vladimir Putin announced he had ordered military action in Ukraine early Thursday, he threatened "those who may be tempted to intervene" on Ukraine's behalf.
"Now a few important, very important words for those who may be tempted to intervene in ongoing events from the outside," Putin said. "Whoever tries to interfere with us, and even more so to create threats to our country, to our people, should know that Russia's response will be immediate and will lead you to such consequences as you have never experienced in your history. We are ready for any development of events. All necessary decisions in this regard have been made. I hope that I will be heard."

Biden condemns Russia's "unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine"
In a statement early Thursday morning, US President Joe Biden condemned Russia's actions, shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced military action in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
Biden's statement:
The prayers of the entire world are with the people of Ukraine tonight as they suffer an unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces. President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering. Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way. The world will hold Russia accountable.
Biden added that he is monitoring the situation from the White House, and will meet with the other G7 leaders in the morning. He will announce "further consequences" imposed on Russia by the US and its allies tomorrow, he said.
