People equate an authoritarian one party state with communism and capitalism with freedom as a result of the Cold War.

But you can easily have unfree capitalism (some would say that's the only kind) and an authoritarian one party capitalist state (see China now and much of Central/Latin America during the mid-late 20th century)

I love it. And its my 2nd favourite Final Fantasy.

But yeah theres some hard stopping points where you just wander through multiple locales with no story progression.

About the white South African girl who comes to live with a black American family during the 1970s apartheid era. Based on a true story.

I just found out that the real life South African girl, whom the character was based on, ended up forming an anti-apartheid movement for students when she went back to SA. Sadly, the American family suddenly stopped hearing from her one day and never heard from her again. Its presumed that she was murdered for her activism.

There's a lot of one dimensional characters and ones people forget solely due to the amount of characters the game has. You'd think people would learn from Chrono Cross that having a ton of party members only works if it is something like Pokemon or Xcom, not a regular JRPG like Suikoden.

I agree that CC didn't do the huge party roster that well, but I wouldn't say the same about Suikoden. Like somebody else said, all the stars physically show up in your HQ doing specific tasks or socializing together. They move around to different areas and sometimes trigger small optional scenes when you enter the room. You can also learn more about their backstories via the investigator.

FFXII is a prequel story.

Not really relevant as its not a tactics game. There are multiple games that take place in Ivalice that could technically be considered sequels/prequels.

Definitely a new story centuries into the future / past. Any prequel / sequel to the original plot would just be living in its shadow, and tbh I was never so gripped by the story / characters that I craved seeing more of them.

I know the Advance games let a lot of people down, but I really liked a lot of the framework / worldbuilding they brought to the table, particularly the races.

I could see a prequel revolving around (or adjacent to) the Ajora story. Either directly involved with Ajora/his disciples, or taking place during the same time period and occasionally interacting with Ajora. That would allow them to include the Lucavi again (maybe even seeing the rest that didn't get shown in the OG FFT) since they've become a theme in Ivalice games with both FFT and FF12.
