I actually just started playing it again yesterday.

It's fun, but it's rough. I play it on Switch and it crashes after every few games. Most of the maps are the same, with an occasional new one or a reskin from time to time, and there's about three new champions added a year if not more. The roster is almost up to 50 champions.

I love playing as Barik, he has a deployable shield and 2 turrets you can place. I have cards on him that repair the turrets when I'm standing next to them, and they also heal me a little at the same time. I've also reinforced my shield so it can take more hits, so I roll up on the point, drop a turret, wait for the enemy to show up and drop my shield.

That being said, the devs have fucked up a lot over the years. Stuff like pay to win, and then moving to Mixer, and then cancelling the eSports side of things. The current battle pass, which ends in ten days, is centred around character reskins depicting RWBY characters - and they've done GenLock in the past too.

That being said, I still adore this game. I hope it keeps development up all through Overwatch 2's lifespan.

Michael Shannon was a good Zod. But that doesn't make up for the rest of the movie.

I'm going to try and keep this short by confining myself to dot points.

* The movie feels shallow and bland - the krypton action scene at the start is like drinking foam, the faux-symbolism of Superman as a Christ figure is pretentious and wanky, and the scenes contrasting the current developing Superman with like innocent child Clark Kent felt insipid and weightless.

* The movie looks washed out and monotone, which I don't like, and I didn't like the CG.

* There's a weirdly disproportionate amount of time on the US military, which takes focus off of Superman and his development as a character - which is already impacted by the movie's attempt to portray him as a Christ figure and explaining why he's an aimless drifter as an adult. Much like any large blockbuster that features the US military, Man of Steel probably got Pentagon bucks to help fund the movie.

* The movie's too long. Every Snyder movie is too long, they move at a glacial pace and by the end it feels like barely anything important happened. Snyder focuses on spectacle, but there's nothing substantial behind that spectacle, so watching his movies feel hollow and pointless. Look at how drawn out and pointless BvS is for example - the same focus on overdrawn, bland spectacle extends to MoS.

* Clark Kent's backstory is terrible. The one thing I really liked about Man of Steel was the scene where Clark couldn't stop hearing people and had a meltdown, it was kind of like an autistic kid suffering from sensory overload and I thought taking inspiration from that was actually kind of inspired. But then...

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/5/5/AAbh80AADiYX.jpg

I'm not gonna rant about the point of the character, because regardless of his impact on the Superman character, this scene is pointlessly melodramatic for the sake of being "cinematic" and "moving". Just like every other big moment in this movie, it rings hollow and feels tryhard.

The crux of my dislike basically boils down to this. Man of Steel is like someone hitting you in the face with a brick for two hours, but they painted "symbolism" on the side of the brick so that anyone who didn't mind getting pummeled in the face could tell everyone else that they missed the symbolism in the act of getting hit in the face for two hours.

The movie wants to pretend that it's making a grander point than it is. It wants to say that this is the most grounded version of Superman ever, but Jonathan Kent dies saving a dog from a tornado. How is that more grounded than passing away from a heart attack and teaching Clark that for all his power, there are things out of his reach that he can never fix? It wants you to see Superman as a Christ figure, but it also wants you to see Superman as a character capable of causing a hundred 9/11s in a row. We don't have a kind and thoughtful protector of humanity, who loves us and wants us to be as safe as possible. We have a traumatized rookie who is basically forced to exterminate thousands of people to save millions more people, and then is forced to murder to prevent four more people from being murdered. And that's lauded as realism, and it gets a pass because "wow life is actually really hard and an actual Superman might actually be BaAaAaAaD!!!"

It's a shallow, immature movie that feels like an edgy 13 year old atheist trying to pwn who they perceive as an intellectually inferior Christian with petty gotcha questions to feel better about themselves. It's an insulting waste of my time.

Brad Taste in Music. I've watched Fantano for years, mostly just as background noise, because I like his voice and he comes across as a collected and knowledgeable professional. And when his personality shines through, it's a really fun channel to watch. That being said, the show is just him talking and giving really thought out opinions on music. There's only so much you can hear someone else describe how a song sounds.

Brad Taste in Music - while also a Fantano bro to a point - is a much more entertaining channel. He actually plays music in his videos and reacts to it, he's played both Phoebe Bridgers albums which is just a whole fucking trip to watch someone sit through. He also does themed videos where people leave song suggestions for the theme, i.e. worst songs ever or most.poorly aged songs ever. He goes at the music with a similar passion to a figure like Fantano, but he's not above giving shit a pass just because he really likes it, haters be damned. I'd recommend one of his themed videos, maybe something positive like Best Songs Ever. That, or look up an artist you like and see how Brad feels about their music.

Another music channel I'd recommend, despite being significantly more clickbaity and harder to recommend, is Justin Hawkins Rides Again. The lead singer of the Darkness has his own YouTube channel where he talks about music news and stuff like that. The video titles are pure clickbait bullshit, but I really like listening to what Justin Hawkins has to say about stuff.

And the thing about music youtubers like this is that the goal is never to hold them as a shining compass of objectivity in regards to music. Fantano doesn't know shit about ABBA. Brad Taste in Music is just vibing and having a good time. Justin Hawkins can be kind of kneejerk and smarmy. But all three channels are informative and entertaining in their own way, and enjoying them is one way to expand your musical palate. Hawkins recently spotlighted a Scottish singer named Paolo Nutini, and that shit is so far up my alley that I'm planning to do a deep dive into his music. Fantano's King Gizzard reviews are how I began to really keep up with their music, because Nonagon Infinity was a tough fucking nut to crack and seeing someone whose opinion I respected - whether I agreed with his takes or not - was one way to stay engaged with the band even when I was struggling with the music. Brad hosts these mediashare streams where you pay to send songs in for him to react to, and it's a great way to find new music. I found like a sci-fi hip hop group a while back, I didn't keep up with them but the music was pretty entertaining.

There's a whole new generation of music youtubers who are shaking up the formula, and I'm really into it.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Leguizamo was plastered on the set, at one point he fucked up a van door during an action scene and slammed Bob Hoskins' arm with it. Broke the dude's arm.

That being said - I think it's reductive to boil this down to Twitter beef aimed at James Franco. Criticism of the casting is one aspect of this backlash, but that came after Leguizamo criticized the concept as tough to execute without aggrandizing Fidel Castro, which he feels would be the wrong thing to do.

He's saying to boycott the movie because it's a fucked up idea, and Franco's casting is one aspect that points towards this movie not getting it right.

MrMallard

The song is okay, but it's mythologized in a really cyclical and repetitive way like Hotel California is and it has the sort of reputation that makes the most annoying brand of drooling moron overplay it because of its status as a masterpiece. Then those same morons get on your case for not wanting to listen to it for the fiftieth time, because your burnt-out ass is "disrespecting a classic".

Like once you crack the mystery, that it's a historical account of the musical landscape from the death of Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper up to where the song was released, the mythologisation starts to get old really quick because the same handful of shallow hacks will keep perpetuating this narrative that it's such a tightly woven mystery that the average layperson will never know its true meaning.

I had a friend who would play the same songs over and over and would like repeat the same platitudes over and over until it was almost unbearable. Like I showed him Pac-Man by Gorillaz and he would keep rapping Colt 45 by Afroman over the beat because that was the most striking part of the song to him, that it was so tightly measured and expressive that he could rap other songs over it. That guy wore American Pie out for me. Just fucking played it and repeated the whole "wow what a saga it's an incredible song" spiel for months, had me entirely sick of this song by the end of it. Like good for him, but I just couldn't stand it after a while. He had that effect on me with a lot of his tastes, and I'm glad I'm not friends with him any more because when I eventually voiced my displeasure he'd like make it out that there was something wrong with me. That baggage is just sort of latched onto American Pie now because of that guy.

To go further into the Hotel California comparison, that song is ultimately a self contained narrative about a guy visiting a hotel and experiencing a bunch of spooky shit. But for years it's been held up as this song depicting a hidden truth, where its applicability as a narrative has supplanted the actual narrative as a song. It's about drugs, or it's about the music industry - when it's just this song about like ghosts or murderers or cultists or some weird shit the narrator gets entirely too caught up in. That's what makes it so compelling, it's this evocative story about being trapped somewhere against your will and having forbidden knowledge, and it's just a weird non-sequitur about this fuckin ghost motel or something.

But where it goes wrong is when people insist on there being that hidden meaning. Where the song is placed on a pedestal as a masterful tale woven beyond the ability for mere mortals to comprehend it because of some bullshit fan interpretation that dictates that its meaning must be more significant than just being a suspenseful story about getting innocently wrapped up in some weird ghost shit. Where the mastery of the song is based entirely on horseshit that makes the reader and writer feel more smart than they actually are. And the exact same problem befalls American Pie, even though it actually does have an explanation that connects all those dots. People still call it an unsolved riddle, and that applicability that other people try to use to fit other narratives into it is why it's so widespread.

Again - fine song. I loved it for years. But it gets really old when people prioritise this mysterious narrative above the strength of the song itself, and all you hear from people are how masterful and evocative the song is for years and years instead of just listening to it as a piece of music. It's a classic, and therefore we must play it as much as possible as a way of honouring it as a classic. And we must dictate what makes it a classic whenever it comes on, whether it be the actual explanation of the song or some WatchMojo-tier cult of personality horseshit that fluffs up the legend so morons can speak up the whole thing. It gets really old after a while.

I saw an absolutely batshit crazy video this morning. In 1998, a TV show in Japan began broadcasting a series where a naked man was locked in a room until he won 1,000,000 ($8,000) from magazine giveaways. He was given no food, no clothes and no utensils of any kind. They didn't even give him a toothbrush. All he had was a table and some water.

It started with a weekly update that they pieced together from recorded footage, but by the end of the year they were livestreaming this constantly naked guy online for anyone who wanted to watch - and he was still under the impression that they were only using "show" footage rather than broadcasting his entire life. They had a dedicated team of people censoring his genitals because he never won any clothes. He didn't even get any toilet paper for ten months.

It is an insane story whether you watch the Atrocity Guide video or the Cr1tikal video. I would highly recommend watching one of those, because the above isn't even the full story. There's even more. I'm about to go into spoilers, I'd recommend discovering this in your own but the following is fucking insane and made me laugh like a maniac.

So when he leaves the room after 335 days, the producers take him to Korea and get him a nice suit, and take him to theme parks to enjoy his freedom and take him out to eat at nice places. And then, WITHOUT TELLING HIM BEFOREHAND, they take him to ANOTHER room in Korea and tell him to get naked, and they tell him to win enough magazine giveaways to cover his plane ticket home to Japan. He didn't even speak Korean, he had to use a Japanese-to-Korean translation diary to write the entries.

AND THEN, the crew kept upping the price without telling him. The plane ticket was for economy class, and they upped the price to business class. And then when he hit that goal, they upgraded it to first class. So he spent three more months in Korea winning enough goods to cover his trip home.

And when he got home? They put him in what he thought was another room. So he begins to strip off his clothes because he's just spent over a year completely naked writing into magazine giveaways, fully expecting to be trapped in yet another giveaway game. But as soon as he's naked, the walls collapse and fireworks go off, and he learns he's actually on a big stage in front of a crowd of hundreds of people. Ass naked, covering his dick while fireworks go off around him.

Yeah, exactly. He's won one league after 20+ years, but he's trained and fought and made friends for every known league in the world. He made it to the top 4 a couple times, and then he didn't do so well. He still perseveres, and he still cares about his team and his friends. That's the spirit of the anime.

No, I mean, when he caught Noctowl, it was supposed to be shiny -and- smaller than other Noctowls.

Oh shit, I take it back then. My bad.

Dude won against a mega metagross with pikachu's iron tail. There is no backpedaling after that. Pikachu is gonna ohko garchomp with thunder wave somehow at this point.
Yeah because Pikachu owns. See almost any of the movies, or most of the TV show. He and Ash have an unbreakable bond, and Pikachu perseveres and gets stronger even without evolving via Thunder Stone ostensibly because this is a shonen with a theme of the power of friendship. This is absolutely nothing new.

Also fuck y'all who don't believe in my boy Ash. You're really gonna do a Death Battle-esque amount of research into Pokemon stats and whether any one Pokemon is objectively any better than another, therefore signifying the objective winner of this fight? This shit is a shonen, and the theme throughout has been the power of teamwork and perseverance.

"Grrrr if Cynthia doesn't win and fight Leon I'm gonna go break a bunch of pencils" - fuckin touch grass. Let my boy Ash fight, and hopefully win.

They fucked up with Noctowl, it's supposed to be a dwarf.
In the show, it's almost as tall as Ash is. Game physiology and anime physiology aren't the same.

I fucking devoured the Johto anime back in the day. Stopped watching at the start of the Hoenn season.

I agree with the topic title, but that's probably as far as I would agree with TC. Not based on anything I've seen, just based on how I feel.

Glad I could inspire you.

I'm still stuck on Borderlands 2 because I can't be assed to continue with it.
I can only imagine. Borderlands 2 was kind of a slog for me because Borderlands 1 is one of those formulative games that I know inside and out, and 2 has so much more background noise and the focus is on being this world-saving hero instead of being a bandit douchebag killing even worse bandit douchebags because you want to be richer than your wildest dreams. I don't even like Handsome Jack as a villain until two thirds of the way through the game, and even then the stuff about killing off former Vault Hunters just kind of sucks to me because like. These guys died hundreds of times and came back through the New-U stations. I don't see how killing Roland is like a serious stepping up point y'know. "he's meant to be hated" - but for most of the story he's mostly just annoying. Like long story short I kind of prefer the basic simplicity of the first game over the people making dubstep noises with their mouths in the second game and the focus from looting and greed to "oh jeez gang we gotta stop the bad guy!".

And then there's the DLC, which is like - it's probably pretty good, but there's so much of it. And combine that with you playing every prior Borderlands game and their respective DLC campaigns, and that's a recipe for burnout.

I mean tbf, if you're still drink-driving at 82, you must be a fucking incredible drunk driver to have not died yet.

Honestly, I didn't really like it. I think you're paying for aesthetic and atmosphere - and those two things are fucking immaculate - but the gameplay itself is a bit of a drag. I didn't like how the battles worked.

You control a little avatar monster who can run around doing different attacks, and you can switch between the little monster fellas on the fly. But I felt like that was lengthening the gameplay without offering a sufficient award, because levelling also felt kind of slow and there's a food mechanic to enhance stats like health and attack which ground any fun I was having to a halt. I got to the point where the world opens up and I just stopped because I wasn't into it after the list of chores I had just gone through y'know

That being said, I'm willing to concede that this could easily be a me problem. The fact that it's physical is a good thing, it'll probably accumulate in value like the PS3 original. And $25 is a great price for a game of this calibre. That's a solid price for any physical Switch game.
