I don't see why 'mental health' needs to specifically refer to having some sort of disease like depression. Stress can lead to plenty of mental and physical health problems down the line and thus blowing off some steam is a perfectly valid way to preserve one's mental well-being. You don't have to be sick to live healthy.

Addressing mental health is good for both sides of the coin. It keeps the workers less burnt out and it can help to ensure the quality of the worker remains productive. As long as not taken in excess, these "mental health days", "alternative sick day" or "I'm growing slowly disgruntled and want to screw around days" are an excellent step in the right direction.

All behold the endgame of capitalism:

All menial work is automated completely eliminating the need of a working class.

Education is hyperfocused on business and entrepreeneurialism. Humanities are a thing of the past.

Anyone who has not become a CEO and millionaire [or inflated future equivalent] by the age of 30 is culled in a Logan's Run type scenario to prevent the need for a social welfare net.

Everyone is literally a millionaire. Capitalism wins!

They could make those decisions, even if the US did what it is required to do so under the Paris accords.

But Trump showed them the way. He used his trickery and guile to teach the states that the true power was inside them all along.

TopicDoes the Holy Trinity contradict logic itself?
ShinyMasamuneZ
06/02/17 2:09:21 PM
#56
Think of the three members of the Trinity as aspects of the same thing or person. God, Jesus, and the Spirit all have different properties and roles that the other two cannot fulfill.

I could call my self Shiny and give myself three different roles: Gamer, Scientist, Teacher

While acting as a Gamer, I am not currently doing experiments or teaching people how to solve problems.
While acting as a Scientist, I am not wasting my time looking for Koroks and am not acting as a mentor.
While acting as a teacher, I am not pressing Up+B to recover nor am I analyzing gigs upon gigs of data.

All three roles correspond to the kind of person I am as a whole, but in general, the three roles manifest themselves fully only in certain places or times. They are separate, yet add up to an entire whole.

I am a gamer, I am a scientist, I am a teacher. But each of those three roles can exist without the other and are decidedly not the same.

Spear loses big on maneuverability so it's out.

??

-At long range: fight with spear extended
-Closer quarters: slide the handle through your hands so that it becomes a shorter weapon

-at moving silently thru unfamiliar territory in the dark: bad enough without a big awkward stick bumping around outside your own physical reach

Use it as a walking stick or simply have it drawn and poised to strike. If you're really worried about being attacked in unfamiliar territory, you wouldn't not have a weapon at the ready.

You can get crowbars the same length as a full size bat.

You can, yes, but given that they are solid metal, they become very heavy as they increase in length.

Spear also doubles as a walking stick, a long shaft for dislodging or retrieving far away objects, a way to test the depths of bodies of water, a method for poking dead bodies to make sure they're actually dead before approaching. Lots of utility.

Shortness means that you end up on average in closer proximity to a zombie than ideal. A blunt weapon is powerful, but would likely need multiple strikes in order to kill a zombie. If we're operating under the assumption that we need to disable the brain, then a bat may not be the best. If the head is not affixed to another surface (the ground or a tree), the maximum amount of force is lessened and the bat serves more to hobble than kill.

I'd argue a polearm like a spear with a long shaft and a very sharp tip (yup, this topic is definitely full of dick jokes) would be optimal in both keeping ones' distance and killing power.

Automation will be a process, not an over night deal. As automation reduces costs, people will be able to afford more for less. There will still be work for able bodied people for a while yet. And when we get to the point where that's not the case, everyone will have a universal income anyway and everything will be obtainable with very little hours of work required. So it'll be fine.

Most predictions about the automation of labor predict that the physical labor jobs that able-bodied people are required for will be the first to go. Industries involving manufacturing, construction, and mining are already or within the next decade or so, will be the first off the map. The size of the job pool is going to decrease as automation increases -- likely faster as automation has the potential to due multiple tasks as once.

I find your analysis of automation to be very "Equations 101". You consider only the base effect without considering the literally millions of factors and players that come into play in real life. It's like modeling the trajectory of a projectile without considering air resistance, object size, launch method or object rotation. The basic outline gives you a good enough idea of what can happen, but without considering the other factors, your accuracy is greatly diminished.

I also reject the notion that a UBI will allow a person to have everything they need or want. The UBI is to supply a person with a bare minimum for food, shelter, clothing and communications, but luxuries and other expenses are generally going to fall outside that sphere of influence.

Automation means less expensive labor and more accurate results. This is because machines are inexpensive compared to human labor, and because machines are more capable of processing tremendous amounts of information (which is one of the reasons healthcare is so expensive - it's a complex industry).

So if medical labor is automated in the majority and leads to cheaper diagnoses and tests, how does that scale with automation in other industries displacing labor and ultimately leading to a massive employment crisis?

It's great that medical costs are reduced, but if people don't have jobs to pay for them or still can't afford care from their meager UBI, what good does that do?
