There was one guy maybe five years ago who would go bananas defending them any time the molester priests and cover ups would come up. He would say things like the Catholic church handled it the best they could and that a lot of people were probably lying. It seemed more like he was genuinely disturbed than trolling because he would post very in depth responses and he seemed to have a lot of knowledge of the Catholic church. I think before long his position broke down into saying that it was a conspiracy against the church.

There isn't just one United States of America. There is a vastly different one depending on who, what, and where you are and the best one is limited to only a few that are far outnumbered by those experiencing the worst. Many people in many parts of America deal with the same problems that supposedly make other countries worse than us. What does it mean to someone who, for example, can't get clean drinking water and food for their kids or has the option of going utterly broke trying to treat a disease, dying, or both, that "it could be a lot worse" when this is supposed to be the best country on the planet? It's an empty, almost insulting sentiment.

I think anyone who can look at all our problems with poverty, hunger and obesity, homelessness, abysmal access to healthcare, corporate dominance, corrupt prison systems and the war on drugs, regular mass shootings, and the litany of other problems that make this country rough for a large amount of its people and say it's great is nothing but an impediment to actually making it great.

white includes all whites who are not Hispanic. so the number is less.

if you count Hispanics, (around 50% id as white) then the number is more.

but apparenly for the 2020 census they will try to have Hispanics pick a race more strickly
so that white percentage of Hispanics will probably fall.

Those results will be very interesting. I'm of heavily mixed blood, with strong indigenous presence on my Mexican side and a hodgepodge of white European influence on the other, but I've never seen myself as one or the other. No single category comprehensively reflects what I am and what I see myself as, which is an inner conflict a lot of mixed Hispanics (and others mixed with white) I know struggle with. Even thinking about it now, I'm not sure what I would pick.

I've been a lifelong fan of his music (Black Hole Sun was my first music video and Audioslave was a BIG part of my high school music experience). I've also been going through a lot of shit the past 8 months or so with treating my depression and anxiety. Now they're saying lorazepam (ativan) had a role in it and I was prescribed that shit as part of my treatment but I couldn't will myself to take it because I was terrified of the side effects.

I'm trying so hard to get myself right and it's like there's no real way to do that. The cure can be worse than the disease. Now someone I looked up to and greatly enjoyed might have succumbed to this very same shit I'm dealing with.

I'm mourning his death and feel bad for his family and all the other fans but on top of all that it's fucking hard to be hopeful for myself, I tell you what.

This is just using technology as an excuse. A private online account doesn't exist in its own little space in the world. They could've been on their smart phones in class liking the picture. They could've been in class or in the hall with the kid they targeted cracking up about an image of him being murdered.

Aside from that, and more importantly, the effects of what they did carry over into the school and can cause problems there. Imagine you go to school and see a kid who liked a picture of someone making threatening and racist images about you. That "like" is no longer just in cyber space. It's an expression of real world thoughts and feelings of a person passing you in the hall, sitting behind you in class, etc. I think of it as less about punishing the racist pieces of shit and more about standing up for and protecting the targeted kid, letting him know they have his safety in mind, keeping him safe from people who, regardless of the medium, condoned an image of him being killed.

One more key point, this more than likely did not start off of school grounds and is an extension of bullying or turmoil that started at the campus further giving them a right to punish them.

Lots of places, by design, have no room for improvement no matter how hard you work or how valuable you are. It's part of their system to bleed lower level employees dry and keep costs down. I've had enough jobs in enough industries to know a lot of times there is a very clear ceiling you can't do anything about.

From 18-28, I went through three long term jobs (and a stream of short gigs in between), busting my ass trying to get ahead, doing all the right things to be a model employee and prove I'm an asset deserving of advancement. In two of them I was praised for my work but basically told there was no room for me to move up unless a string of people just suddenly disappeared. In the third one, I was let go because they couldn't offer me a higher paying position but also couldn't justify paying me what little amount they were. I was offered not even a token raise. Then they brought in some new kid and expected me to train him.

After that, I realized that I could settle for doing the bare minimum to get my check. I'll never, ever break my back again to make someone else money on the long shot that they'll take notice and properly reward me for it. Ironically, after I settled into that mindset, I found a job I was naturally good at and actually liked. I didn't have to force myself to get through it or put up with shithead managers or anything like that. The money was decent and I got more promotions and raises in three years of working there than I did in 10 years busting my ass before, which isn't as big a deal as it sounds because the number before it job dismally low.
