1995 did way better overnight than I thought. At least I feel vindicated in my 1987 seeing 1995 supporters shit their pants over how 'badly' it's doing here.

I kinda disagree about '96 not having depth. Resident Evil is a pretty good game to have next to Mario 64. And Crash Bandicoot, while not popular, is pretty iconic. That said, I'm expecting 2000 to win with 55-60%.

Well, compare that depth to 2000 which has a Zelda, a Final Fantasy a Pokemon game and 2 outstanding PC releases. 1995 has 'depth' until you realize that the only good games that came out that year were SNES platformers, and Chrono Trigger.

I am puzzled how polarized predictions were for 1995/1987. Everyone who picked '95 thought it would be a blowout. And then like five people had '87 winning.

Think that's a result of 2 different schools of thought pre-contest. Most people figured the years would be as strong as their strongest game, but others figured depth would matter. This is probably the most egregious example of single game strength vs raw depth of field, but 2000/1996 will have similar results.

I wonder if we'll get trends due to Chrono Trigger being terrible in Europe...

Europe also didn't get Mario RPG IIRC, could be a bad overnight for 1995. This match might end up being close by the end.

1995 isn't weaker than people expected; 1987 was just severely underrated.

Zelda. Metroid. Castlevania. Mega Man. If 1995 can eke out a win against these powerhouse franchises then I think that the contest future looks very bright for anyone who picked '95 to go deep.

Only underrated by the short sighted. Aside from the quality and history of the games in 1987, it benefits strongly from Breath of the Wild, and I think it and all the other Zelda years are going to run roughshod over the bracket.

Looks like we'll have proper system representation for Round 3+ pics

Could turn things around for stuff like SNES for 1991, N64 for 1996 / PS1 for 2000, GC / GBA / Xbox for 2001, etc

That's PS2 for 2000. Well, that requires 2000 to survive that 2000/1996 match in Round 2, since it seems like the Round 1 pics will be reused for Round 2. 2000 is at somewhat of a disadvantage because it's missing out on Pokemon GSC.

Also, you forgot about the PS1 for 1995. I expect 1995 to make it to Round 3, where it'll get a chance to use the PS1 to patch up its lack of depth beyond Chrono Trigger.

2000 doesn't need Pokemon to beat 1996. Or did I see a different result in round 1?

Not sure I understand this result. I took 2015, not even considering the possibility of an Undertale rally. It's just such a better year than 2005. 2005 is similar to 1995 in that it had 2 good games (SotC and RE4) and then a giant pile of trash. Meanwhile, 2015 had Witcher 3, MGS5 and Rocket League, all untested and all fantastically good games. Additionally, Undertale had its own intrinsic strength on this site that let it go even with ME3 before the rallying started.

This is the first result of this contest so far that just doesn't make sense to me.

1995 was doomed to begin with. It will take a lot more than Chrono Trigger + fodder to beat a landmark year like 87, especially with BotW being a big shot in the arm for the Zelda franchise that has been disapointing for the last 15 years.

This is so weird to me. I look at it and think "Where's Doom? Where's Titanfall 2? Where's The Witness?"

And then I remember this is GameFAQs, and that Dark Souls 3, FFXV and SFV actually probably would beat all those games on this site. Well, maybe not Street Fighter. C'mon!

Doom and Titanfall 2 were fantastic games, and probably the first FPS games in at least 5 years to even excite me enough to play. The Witness had potential, but the complete lack of a colour-blind mode meant it was unplayable for me at a certain point

https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/3486-division-5-round-2-pokemon-zelda-mm-mgs-pokemon-gs

This is one of the most nonsensical results we've ever had. Majora basically got that same result against GSC 1 v 1 a few years later in 2010 when RBY wasn't in the poll anymore. It's really hard to look at that and not imagine that MM boosted by the time 2010 rolled around, which makes me feel a bit better about getting snakebitten by that.

I also remember at the time that people were calling RBY's performance disappointing and an indication it wasn't THAT strong because it couldn't beat MGS, and more or less ignoring what else was in the poll. People were still in Pokeshock by then.

I remember people being really impressed by RBY there, this was the birth of Pokefear. It had no business beating MM with GSC also leeching it

My favorite prediction is nailing both Pikachu > Sora and Mega Man > Charizard in the most recent character battle. Got me tied for second in Guru that year!

e: If I have to pick only one then definitely Mega Man > Charizard. I was one of the few it seemed to take Charizard more at his Kratos match performance than as his Bowser/Mario performances.

e2: As for failed predictions I think I've only ever picked the correct winner like two or three times through every single contest.

Mega Man > Charizard was an upset? I took that without hesitation

I am also taking 2004 over 1994. I know this is an upset pick but we shall see on this one.

1994 has two killers: Super Metroid and Final Fantasy VI. Then solid backup in Mega Man X and Donkey Kong Country. Then it fizzles.

2004 has Half-Life 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metroid Prime 2, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Halo 2, Metroid Zero Mission, World of Warcraft, Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, Far Cry, KotOR 2, and more. It is the deeper year by far, even if no one game there would beat SM or FFVI. That should help it.

Ya, but the top 4 of 1994 would beat every other game in 2004. This seems like a no-brainer to me

How in the world is 1985 losing. It's the year NES was released. Crazy

System means nothing without games, and Zelda/MM/CV/Metroid are all better games than SMB. What this match definitely proves, is that game strength and variety are important to having a strong year.

this board is full of Nintendo kids, but most of them are Zelda fanboys/girls so it's likely just that there's just a bigger Zelda fanbase on here than a Mario fanbase. (especially since a new Zelda game just came out)

Even taking LoZ out of the equation, I would still pick 1987. Mega Man, Castlevania and Metroid are all better games than SMB1, and a much bigger part of my childhood.
