I quit the drugs two years ago and alcohol a few months ago. I've only kept smoking to help get me sober and will start the patch in the next couple months.

So yes, addicts do want to change sometimes. And something people need to realize is that once you're an addict, you're always an addict, regardless of whether you are sober/clean or not.

Well you shouldn't claim to change yourself and not do it.

And again, the best thing you can do is educate people. Not using lies or exaggerated scare tactics, but just the facts. Teach kids the dangers from a young age, bring in real former and even current drug addicts who are willing to share their story and teach people the realities.

Well people sometimes just won't care.

All you have to do is let them smoke until they need help. Then make them pay a fee for health care. If the fee can't be paid, still offer them free health care but intentionally delay the amount of time it takes for them to get health care.

No arrests required.

Why would you make them illegal? Have you learned nothing from history? It won't make people stop smoking, it'll just increase crime by pretty much making tobacco dealers and then you'll be throwing people into our already overburdened prison system literally just for smoking. As well as taking away potential tax dollars and funneling it through drug dealers and cartels who tend to be real criminals and commit violent crimes. Tobacco is a billions of dollars a year industry that have people literally addicted to the product, so if you don't think cartels and shit would get involved in it then you need to put your thinking cap on. Prohibition was a failure as was the war on drugs, Illegalizing tobacco is the opposite of what we need to be doing, which is taxing and regulating drugs.

And I despise smoking btw and am a once in a blue moon drinker as well so it's not like I'm biased in favor of any if this, I'm just using common sense.

Well this is why you disqualify people who smoke or abuse illegal drugs.
