voldothegr8 posted...
That isn't how slots work and casinos aren't risking their gambling licenses to rig them in such a manner. Don't forget there are stringent laws at play with casino games. No the rigging is much more straight forward, long term you lose 5%-20% on every single bet, depending on the machine. You can get lucky and win the battle and walk away ahead for a day, but the war is literally mathematically impossible to win.

This.

Generally, all regulated legit slot machines have a set hold % that refers to how much, on average, over millions of plays, the machine will keep. Think of it like cents on the dollar. So a machine with a 6% hold will keep 94 cents of every dollar played. There will be wins and losses greater than that but over the life of the machine it will keep that amount.

Almost every regulated casino I know of has some maximum hold percentage allowed in law. For example, in my state, its 15%. In reality the machines are all set higher than that to be competitive. The slot machine monitoring systems know in realtime what each machine is doing and they regularly vary based on floor location. So, the flashy ones by the entrance usually keep more than the older machines that are harder to find.

As has been explained, the theory is that if players are winning a little bit every so often they will keep playing and feel better about losing. But that is not the same as the machines providing wins at first and then getting cold. Thats not a real thing with legit slot machines. (The world of illegal slot machines is the wild west and anything can happen. I have seen 60% hold percentages on illegal machines).

Its pretty wild to think about how much money the casinos make on a few cents from every dollar. There are billions and billions of dollars in handle that go through the machines.

Ad far as being excluded or trespassed - that doesnt happen too much and usually its because the patron did something wrong. The casinos want people there losing money so its generally a high bar before they will exclude someone.

It was a conviction for sexual abuse and not rape because of how NY defines rape.

(spoilers for description of the sex act, just in case). The jury found that he forcibly penetrated her with his fingers but not his sex organ. That is a material difference in NY law.

I only point this out because saying he raped her plays right into his hand. Its not true and was actually the basis of a counter suit that he filed.

I keep seeing the rape word used to describe him and it does a disservice to the truly terrible human being he is. He was found, by a jury, to have abused a woman and then defamed her. The truth is bad enough.

No leadership on the right at all anymore. I thought more people would be speaking out about a felon being the face of the party and trying to calm the insanity but none of them are doing it.

They also arent pets. Like, I never understood having one as a pet other than to be like Im the snake person, look at me.

I see those people in Vegas with the boa or python or whatever it is walking around to get pictures and hate it. I avoid them completely. Some of them scare people with the snake. I would call the cops.

Yes, and if you got to the point that the article is trying to make, it's arguing that even from a practical-minded business perspective, these unsustainable business practices are resulting in unstable economies and worse products/services, you know, the two things capitalism is "supposed" to be good at.

Like, you do realize workers are consumers too, right? If workers are constantly being laid off, they're not buying as much stuff.

There is nothing unsustainable about keeping operating expenses in check though. The opposite is what is unsustainable.

As pointed out, FAANG and a lot of the SAAS sector had their revenue numbers materially changed during COVID. Responsible companies made adjustments to ensure sustainability. Generally salaries and other operating expenses are the easiest way to get leaner - so thats what they did. Its completely reasonable and good business sense. They reacted to changing market dynamics not the other way around.

Is this bad for the 10 or 15% of employees that lost their job in some cases? Of course. But the alternative is the company in its entirety goes under and all 100% of the employees, shareholders, and the people that benefit form what is produced lose everything.

OP actually walks through how and why people's lives are being ruined, not just handwaiving how terrible it all is

Its all based on a shitty and unrealistic premise.

For profit companies exist to make money. They don't operate a charity by offering guaranteed salaries. Public companies have additional legal and ethical standards to their shareholders to maximize profits.

A company should not over hiring or overpaying to the point it leaves the company in bad financial position. If they continue to operate in a way that lessons their profitability they are mismanaging the company, failing to uphold their duty to the shareholders, putting the future life of the company in jeopardy, and all the great things that the author of that piece thinks they should be doing will never happen.

it's the part we're not supposed to talk about when it comes to late stage capitalism: When profit is the goal, all things, all innovation, eventually becomes a race to "how do we make the most money for the least work"

"but it's a perfect system because people don't like when that happens and the infallible market will correct itself!"

yeah and now look what's happening. People don't like it. And the people with all the capital don't care because they can buy their way out of any proper correction. Wow. If only all competing ideologies and regulations weren't yelled out of the room in favor of this notion that a company that wants money and only money -won't- just be evil at the first opportunity where being evil provides more money

This is a better thought out and reasoned post and argument than the quote in the OP.

Businesses are firing people to stay cash flow positive wahhhhhhhh lol. What a shit take. (The article in the OP, not what I quoted).

HR is trained to say this but it isn't very true, unless you like meltdown but most people don't. Even then they won't hear about it.

It depends on a lot of things. What market are you in, what kind of job do you do, what level you are at. I regularly get calls about former employees and how people leave or take bad news definitely has helped and hurt.

For example, I fired an employee recently for something in their personal life that reflected poorly on the organization. They understand and took it like a pro and Im giving glowing recommendations about them and trying to help them land on their feet. I have also had someone not get a promotion (they werent ready for) and completely check out before leaving. Gave them terrible feedback. Smaller industry and market than some but the point is, how you leave can matter.

I deal with this on the opposite end. I lead about 200 people and often have internals apply for jobs that we ultimately do not hire.

Leaving and finding something else is obviously an option but you may also want to talk to someone you know that was involved and figure out why you didnt get it. Do it in a professional way, trying to figure out what I can improve so that I dont miss out on future opportunities type thing.

The way you respond means a lot if you intend to stay in the organization. Even if you dont, depending on the industry and your position, how you respond may follow you.

Yes, like anything you have to pay tax on income. Some of what has been suggested provide unique tax benefits though . If you use a Roth you dont pay tax when you take the money out once it matures but will be penalized if you take out early. That is why this is more of a retirement instrument.

If you just open a normal brokerage account you will have to pay taxes on realized gains but the rate will vary depending on how long the investment has been going. You can also deduct losses.
