Sometimes it doesn't work as well as it should, but I pretty much constantly and subconsciously keep track of my orientation gyroscopically.

With a bit of local geography info, I know for example this highway runs north-south or that mountain is to the west of town, etc, and I really don't have to reorient myself very often to keep basic track of my own turns and rotations.

It's actually super easy for me right now because my house is almost perfectly square with the Cardinal directions, with the garage being on the North side, and my most used road into town goes almost perfectly east-west.

I always just sort of assumed everyone did this, considering I don't think about it at all.
