MetalmindStats 09/08/25 4:50:58 AM #331 | IMO, if Snake and Sora's match pic could shift 5%+ the former's way, why couldn't Kirby and Bowser's have done the same in a markedly low votal bout between two characters with far greater fanbase overlap? Versus Melee Kirby in Melee Dream Land, that Bowser art looks just as clearly out of place as Sora did, and I think the contrast of expressions and match of ice puff against fire breath imparted in Kirby an underdog aura that played perfectly into his appeal. ...another unmentioned possibility (albeit one I tend not to favor) is that nothing notably unusual happened there at all - after all, Luigi arguably has been about on par with Bowser (with some fluctuations in the two's relative standing) ever since the Nintendo Boost. --- she/her (they/them also okay) ~never knows what to say~ |

Find it terrifically fun the whole way through, and also it's meaningful and resonant for me in ways that are too private for me to wish to get into here. Speaking of the latter, um... Vin_Inari posted... Well, if you wanted to add one extra Block comprised of unnominated songs, that would be fine. It is a bit late, but the list still isn't finalized yet & you did express an interest in making such a Block... seeing as you couldn't very well create it until people were done removing songs, there's probably a bit of a loophole about how by definition that Block of yours had to be blank until now-ish.Thank you all for the invitation, and sorry I didn't respond for a while, again... My original notion about a Block comprised of unnominated songs was that it was something I should nominate either before the official close of nominations or else not at all. And so my plan had been to determine the contents of such a Block based on what looked likely to get cut at that point. Ideally (imo) I'd be using/have used all this extra time to listen to all the unnominated songs, but I haven't been and continue not to be in a good place for that. As things stand, I, uh, have four songs in mind? Hoping to decide on a fifth sooner rather than later, ack. --- she/her (they/them also okay) ~never knows what to say~ |

I understand if you choose to disregard my vote as such. MetalmindStats 07/18/25 5:45:24 PM #17 | MZero posted... Even if we take the upper limits for the UK versions, say the GBC version sold 500k in the US, and all four versions sold 500k in Japan/the rest of the world we don't even hit 7 million.500k a piece on average sounds low if anything to me, given how wildly popular Harry Potter was throughout Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe, (Japan too I think, but iirc the country has exact sales figures for most console and handheld titles), and to a lesser extent various other countries with less robust markets for video game sales at the time. Combine that with the apparent PAL PlayStation bundles, and it sounds reasonable to me that the mistake here is simply that an all-platforms-at-the-time sales figure was misreported as a sales figure for what was presumably considered the game's primary platform alone. --- she/her (they/them also okay) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 07/05/25 12:41:51 AM #11 | Might be jumping the gun a bit by my criteria for myself, but it does feel fitting to formally nominate Sly and the Family Stone - Stand! today: Year: 1969 Track Count: 8 (most releases nowadays seem to have 5 extra tracks - singles and rarities - tacked on to the end, which we would not be covering) Runtime: 41:30 (according to Rate Your Music; appears to differ slightly between sites and releases of the same tracklist) Sample Track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JvkaUvB-ec&pp=ygUPZXZlcnlkYXkgcGVvcGxl (Note: many lyrics contain slurs or similarly outdated means of referring to other people, usually to make a point.) Stand! is chock full of the sort of deeply dynamic production paired with the potpourri of contributions one might expect from the groups conceit, in the process encapsulating views of a moment in American culture and history. Plus, its concentration of Sly and the Family Stone's most popular and acclaimed songs almost reaches the extent of a greatest-hits album, each (IMO) easily distinct enough to hopefully enable a compelling ranking process. Follow-up There's a Riot Goin' On has even greater critical acclaim and better fits the moment (at least in the US), but I feel it's rather less accessible and rankable. ...and yes, Sly Stone died two days before Brian Wilson, who we recently paid tribute to by covering Pet Sounds. --- she/her (they/them also okay) ~never knows what to say~ |

Maybe I'll even write more about it if it makes the Switch list (though the PC version is my first and favored) and if I feel like rambling; am undecided as of yet. ~~ And thank you for gathering and posting the list and coordinating write-ups, tazzy! I'm unironically quite fond of your approach and its brevity and how different many of the aspects you focused on are from what I might've emphasized in your place. In short, I find Celeste narratively (and musically) compelling and deeply resonant above all else, as excellently executed as I agree its gameplay and game feel are even in isolation. And I think it's really cool that Celeste matters so much to us, as its two first-place voters here, for mostly distinct reasons! --- she/her (they/them also okay) ~never knows what to say~ |

Is it theoretically readable for anyone? We're trying to keep all of our actual write ups stored on a backup Google Sheet; if anything goes really wrong in real life and we have to stop working on this suddenly, we can just make that sheet public & release all the work we had done. ...But if no one can see write ups posted this way, especially the really long ones with a lot of line breaks, then we're going to have to come up with another solution. ...It doesn't seem to be working on phones (at least, through any browser we've tried; a sheets app may or may not work), but we're hoping it's at least readable for anyone on a computer? For me, on my computer, it's there but almost impossible to actually read in practice. I have found two methods that allow for comfortably reading it, though - 1) Ctrl+C copying the write-up and pasting it into a word processor, or 2) copying the entire Individual Unnominated Songs sheet and then placing my cursor anywhere within the copy's write-up. ~~ Also uhh never actually responded when you answered my question and such Vin, ack. Decided for whatever reason to wait to post my planned others'-nominations-set-to-be-dropped Block at the same time, only to interpret what you said one way until the last minute and never just ask about it and so never actually nominate the Block. ...anyways, my silliness aside, thank you. What's next, Super Hexagon? That would be neat, imo! ...but then I think I like arcade-style games way more than I'm guessing you do. Also going to call back to what I wrote here: tazzyboyishere posted... but it seems to me veridically very difficult to play this game and not like it at least a little bit.I ran a Best Indie Game Ever contest here some years back (which felt successful and well-received, and I'd still quite like to stage a sequel someday). In the course of that contest, VVVVVV was the only game to receive 20+ votes on its own - doing so twice, no less, peaking at 27 votes. Its second match (against La-Mulana) tied for the highest votal of the contest to that point, alongside the other match of that day's topic, Undertale v Journey. That record held until VVVVVV's next match, against Undertale, where both games received 18 votes a piece - VVVVVV fell off a bit in the subsequent tiebreaker, but it stayed 4-for-4 at turning out voters at an elevated rate. My guess is that its polished, execution-heavy gameplay at a brisk, easily accessible length gives it a disproportionately high playrate (or, uhh, beatrate?) and hence really broad appeal here. ...would be neat to find out how Slay the Spire would fare in that sort of setting, come to think of it. MetalmindStats 06/12/25 10:51:41 PM #11 | I think I'd prefer next cycle's theme being one that allows for one or more Beach Boys nominations, but I don't outright object to a special Pet Sounds week. However, I do feel that said special week should be next week (221), thus delaying our other upcoming albums, if we go through with it. And also, Bitto posted... Sounds like a themed nomination idea!I agree with this - think it would complement some of our other cycles and general skews in our album coverage so far effectively as a one-time cycle and am happy with our current nomination cycle method. And it was really neat to see (well, technically remind myself of) the Acclaimed Music top 100 artists list, thank you Fool. Relevant to much of what we've posted about so far, I'm inclined to nominate Sly and the Family Stone's Stand! for next cycle if the theme allows for it and if I'm regularly participating by that point. All I feel equipped to fairly say about the latter is 'hopefully, and hopefully that I've already given this week's album a first listen is a good sign'. --- she/her (they/them also okay) ~never knows what to say~ |

It's been really neat to see just how much (albeit transitory) reach we've managed while maintaining a ~10-user core community - one in which several of us have stuck with almost the whole time, while others were regulars for a while before falling off or are regulars nowadays. (And then there's me, in whatever category you wish to file my participation and place in general) Compiling the above data gave me the chance (one I took) to spin several past Rank the Tracks albums (and a few stray songs off other Rank the Tracks) I hadn't heard recently. This turned the process into my pleasure activity for the weekend, which in turn made me feel like I was fully celebrating the history of Rank the Tracks. Most were relistens because I struggle to take in lyrics alongside other activities unless I already know said lyrics well, though this did allow for a few far overdue first-time listens. Of those, I found Desired's Lovestory especially enjoyable! After missing the G-Darius Original Arcade Score's week, this also feels like my first chance to mention how compelling and absorbing it is for me - have been really glad to find music from it in my mind as I write this! ...anyways, our newest album selection process in particular makes me very happy, with its balance between well-known/acclaimed and obscure selections, its interplay between themed and non-themed rounds, and how robust participation in it has been. And it's just one piece of the processes behind Rank the Tracks that have kept this project going for so long, all of which is a tremendous credit to Fool - thank you so much! It's also a great credit to the regulars, and to our participants in general - thank you all so much! This tallying process turned into a project that reinvigorated my interest in Rank the Tracks, and I'm very much hoping to return on a regular basis (from next week on at this point). --- she/her (they/them also okay) ~never knows what to say~ |

Anyways, I do anticipate actually waiting a bit this time to nominate more Blocks and also lack anything else even close to ready at this time. However, I would like to ask you all and frankly also others outside the Hotel who see this, How would you feel about (close to nominations closing) me devoting, say, one of my Blocks to nominating songs others have already nominated? There's currently, by my count, three songs from that category I'm certain I care about that (based on the information available to me) seem to be at potential risk of getting cut. My idea is to give those who do wind up needing to make such decisions a bit easier of a time doing so, depending on how exactly things shake out at that point. ...would that mean each of those songs technically would have two nominators, though? Is that something I'd be making others think about? --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 05/24/25 5:40:31 AM #270 | Am finally almost ready to nominate a few Blocks to start, but first figure I should ask a couple questions relevant to my intended nominations - 1) my current plan is to nominate every song from an album which has two back-to-back songs over 10 minutes long each. I'd split them into two separate Blocks (first song ending a Block while the second starts another), but that feels like an arbitrary divide on my part, something I feel like I'd be doing for the express purpose of sneaking two >10-minute songs in close proximity. Am quite alright with changing things such that I'm not nominating both those songs (in which case I also wouldn't nominate most of the rest of their source album) - would you all prefer that? and 2) another of my currently intended nominations has a video that I feel takes the spotlight over the song itself, which seems at least somewhat against the spirit of nominating songs. Again, am happy to take that as a cue to choose some other song with a less center-stage video instead - should I do so? --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 05/08/25 11:48:28 PM #115 | Fluttershy_Pony posted... That's completely fine! There are no restrictions with what you do with your Blocks, so 20 songs from the same artist is quite allowed. Mixing artists in a Block is also fine, if you decide you'd rather go that route--Bane has a Block comprised of two excess songs from nominated albums (they had 11 songs each) & three individual songs, so either way is fine.Okay, thank you! Still deliberating on my nominations but did want to point out that both hombad46 and ZaziGuado have nominated Outer Wilds. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 05/08/25 12:00:35 AM #91 | hi! How would you all feel about me nominating, say, two albums from a single artist that add up to exactly 20 songs combined, and then listing those as my Blocks 1-4? The links I'd post would be for the whole albums, but I'd list the other components of your preferred nomination format for each song within my post. If that's not good with you all, I'm happy to go for a different approach. (or, alternatively, are mixed blocks of say one album and then some other songs not from that album to reach a multiple of 5 good? Would still list each song as above.) (Also not sure why I abstained from your last song ranking, in retrospect, especially after rereading some of the one before it...) --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 05/06/25 7:15:58 PM #31 | My opinions re others' opinions: LightningStrikes posted:I deliberately underseeded Astro Bot to give it a potential second-round draw against Metaphor, but not by that much IMO. Having it as a 1-seed at the end of the decade sounds plausible enough to me, though neither Mario Odyssey nor any Sony-published game got there in 2020. However, I tried to seed the top half or so based on how I think it'd shake out right now, and I definitely don't think Astro Bot is up there yet. ...though by that same logic, I think your Remake/Rebirth comparison makes lots of sense in retrospect, just not that Xenoblade 3 should sink for it. And what you said is really nice, thank you. MacArrowny posted... Which reminds me, 13 Sentinels should probably be in that GotD bracket...I forgot 13 Sentinels was a 2020 release outside Japan, oops. Though by my logic in determining the bottom half, it'd likely have only been a 50/50 inclusion or so. And I was trying to limit the influx of Atlus JRPGs, but in retrospect should have subbed out Shin Megami Tensei V for Persona 3 Reload. Re Wonder, I sort of agree with you and originally had similar plans, but I also think you're on the low end of B8 respect for it - that most of us would take it over the likes of Ragnarok and Xenoblade 3 without thinking twice. ctesjbuvf posted... I think Persona 5 being a remake might hurt nominations more if anything. It likely doesn't get that high a seed.Ehh, Golden didn't seem to get hurt in 2020, considering it was a Vita exclusive at the time - whereas Royal's on every contemporary platform that matters here. And I mostly agree with those who think Royal shouldn't be in, fwiw, but that particular cat's already out of the bag. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

Nine Sols eventually became the very last cut. There were, I felt, a great many games I had to snub in the process - albeit mostly almost surefire fodder, admittedly. Bayonetta 3, Dead Space, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, NEO: The World Ends with You, and Octopath Traveler II are a few examples that I hope hint at my process for whittling down the bottom slightly-less-than-half. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

Doesn't Steve have a song on the top 100 charts right now?IMO this prompt doesn't expect that the character stays silent in every adaptation of their source material, but tbf A Minecraft Movie is just too big to remain separable from Steve in Minecraft, in retrospect.
