my first guess for varsity blues was blues brothers lol

i think the thing that really made the site worse and got the horrible racist types to congregate was the advent of discord -- it let people who wanted to form groups and to try to establish a type of presence on the forums coordinate that effort a lot easier than skype, aim, irc, or vent allowed at the time.

i was on /b/ until the mlp board was made and i started there in 2005. it actually did used to be a place where you could have a decent discussion.
