nomura just gets a little silly with it sometimes

there's not really any correct order to play the series since most entries assume you have knowledge of most other entries but also build up to those other entries so..... probably just stick to release order?

When you say you'll be in Shinjuku for a week, that means you'll be traveling with that as your base right? Shinjuku is nice, but you don't need more than a day there. When I went 2 months ago that was my base, and I did most of Western Tokyo going to Shinjuku, Shibuya, Roppongi, Yokohama, and Kamakura.
yeah, most of the week's gonna be spent visiting cities in the area. i don't remember all of them off the top of my head but shibuya, akihabara, asakusa and harajuku are all definites
I went alone (very easy to go wherever I want whenever I want), but my best advice is to use Google maps. Pin key attractions you want see, but also be flexible. Don't try and hit every single thing, because there's not enough time for everything. Let yourself stay longer or leave early if you want. Also bring a battery pack because you'll be using Google maps a lot. Unfortunately I had to leave Yokohama early because I forgot my battery back at the hotel.

All you really need for apps is Google maps and Google translate. Translate mainly for signs because almost everyone speaks enough English. And pack lightly for days around town. I bought a sling backpack and it was amazing, very easy to swing around to my front to grab cash (bring cash, you'll need it), and it's light. I averaged 13 miles of walking everyday for 17 days, so bring comfortable shoes.
yeah, the walking's pretty daunting for me. i don't get around much and when i do it's in a pair of really unsupportive vans so i've been looking all around for shoes. ended up settling on some waterproof Adidas one with good reviews today

There are a lot of places that don't allow or will try to bounce gaijin in Kyoto. Be prepared for that, if there are restaurants with people who are standing outside but they're not trying to get you to come inside, they are there to stop you.

I recommend checking out Akihabara while you're in Tokyo, I found it more fun than Shinjuku.

Osaka is amazing, I liked it better than Tokyo. If you can go to a restaurant called Moegi in Osaka, I HIGHLY recommend it
good to know, thx! not spending that much time in Osaka since it's the last stop before the flight back but i'll try to hit up that restaurant

Since you'll probably be taking the train everywhere, the ticket destination is by price (I do not live anywhere there are subway, no clue if this is just standard). So look for the destination on the subway map near the ticket vendor, look at the yen price, and that is how much yen you put in the machine and buy the ticket for.

Going through train ticket gates, you always put the ticket in the gate and always pick the ticket up when it spits it out at the other end. Even if you go to the wrong gate, you must do this. You will always get your ticket back UNTIL you reach the intended destination, that is when it will keep the ticket when you go through the exit gates. Once again, I have not clue if this is just standard anywhere you go in the world or not.

If you don't know about paying customs in Japan, you just place the money on the counter or the tray that is provided when paying money. BUT employees may hand the money to you directly which is strange. I guess it is a one-way courtesy (it is rude for the store to take your money from your hand but it is ok to hand your money to you). Also if you are in more modernized stores, especially convenience stores, there will be a money machine at the counter where you will use that to pay for your purchases- these will be pretty straight forward, you put bills in the bill spots and coins in the slots, very similar to modern self checkout if you ever used cash. Usually the employee will move/wave their hand toward the machine to let you know that is how you pay.

Alot of modern quick/convenience restaurants that aren't mom/pop will use kiosks where you choose the food and pay for it. It may even be on a screen at the table. These most likely will have english language selection.

Alot of big convenience/drug store chains will give you the option to buy tax free (this requires your passport). You will save on tax but they will seal it in a bag that you are not supposed to open until you leave Japan. So only do this for souvenirs or purchases you don't intend to use in Japan. On the subject, tax is built into the price, so tax free stores just have lower prices (or actually, 2 prices, the tax free, and the with tax prices- If you are in a store that lists 2 prices for everything, that is what that means.). Other normal stores, its just the one price with tax already tacked in.

They will always ask if you want a bag when you buy something. Listen for the word FUKURO. Just say hai or ie if you want or don't want a bag. If you just stand there dumbfounded at the question, most employees will just grab a bag and show you what they are saying or even ask you in english.

You might notice in stores, like electronic stores or toy stores there may be signs posted saying no pictures.
this is all super helpful, thanks! i didn't know like, any of that

I mean, I get the idea. The visual of a few hundred people walking out might make the university think twice about who they pick for their graduation speakers, but this was also after all of their checks clears that (partially) paid Seinfelds appearance fee.
no clue if his being there was a surprise or not (i doubt it was), but there's plenty of motive to attend the event regardless. i'm sure plenty of the people who walked out returned after he left-- it's not like they went to graduation just cause and then left, they probably had people they cared about graduating, which was why they attended in the first place.
On one hand, I commend them for having a belief system theyre willing to to stand up for, on the other hand, I repeat what I said not everyone is going to have the same views as you do, and just walking away isnt going to make it disappear.
it's not just walking away? it's protest. obv it's not going to trigger immediate societal change but it makes a statement and spreads the message

But if you have the mentality that if everyone here doesnt think like I do, Im walking away., youre going to be walking away A LOT.
plenty of other people there don't think like they do, that's not the reason they walked out

the reason they walked out is because the university was giving a platform to a noted ass
