Not only that, but the British Empire was SO vast, that there are many places where English overtook the "native" language. (Did you see "our" moron "President" AMAZED by the guy from Liberia that spoke perfect English?) Also, it's very well taught in Europe. (because of the money you mentioned). Anectotal: Before I started dating my (now) wife, I was messing around with a gal that was originally from Germany, but had lived in the States for many years. Anyway, she spoke (PERFECT) English, but with a combination of a gutteral German accent, but also a British accent. I always thought that was an interesting accent. |
