Way back in 2016 I played the first half of this game for the Game of the Month club. It was fine, but not really my kind of game. It got chosen in my random trophy list in the current TrueTrophies event, so I figured I could beat the game in a decently small amount of time, and boy was I wrong about that.

Honestly though the main problem was getting through the levels - the game's instant kills on even specks of magma or crowding enemies into extremely thin corridors or small areas caused more deaths than any of the bosses. The bosses were actually the highlight of my play - unfortunately I don't remember the bosses I fought in 2016, but the area 4 and 5 bosses were both fun fights. I really enjoyed the Space Invaders portion of the area 5 boss. The area 6 boss just had too many forms (and I kept dying when it started launching magma) to be fun, but I still managed to clear it eventually.

The trophy that the event chose was finding all secret areas, so some levels I did not collect all treasures or save all the scientists, and one level I just skipped completely. I do intend to go back and get 100% eventually.

bonus question: what's the best "dungeon crawler" game?

It's definitely a Persona title. But for pure dungeon crawlers only, the best one I've played is Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk.

Trinity Trigger is a ripo- I mean, tribute to Secret of Mana but somehow manages to get everything about it wrong. It's also not really built for single player - to get the best experience you probably have to play co-op, because the AI for your party members won't use specials unless you switch to them, and they frequently get trapped running into walls during boss fights all the time. If I counted how many times this happened in a boss fight, it would probably be around a hundred - you pretty much had to enter every boss fight with a full pack of healing items and hope they survived. The story is basically a copy and paste of every generic JRPG ever, and they even lampshade the inconsistency of how a desert and a snow area are next to each other on the map (that part was actually funny though). There's also the annoyance of having multiple weapons for each character that share nothing - you have to upgrade each individual weapon and outfit them appropriately and there's just not enough of a reason to do so because the game is so short and there isn't enough resources unless you grind a lot. I mostly just kept each character with their default weapon for the entire game.

I will say though that it's a short game and definitely doesn't overstay its welcome, the battle system (for the character you control) is still very good, and the English voice cast does an excellent job. The latter is a usual from most XSEED titles like this one, but it's always nice to see.

Haar is great. Best dracoknight in the series, especially in Radiant Dawn which gives him a lot more additional levels.

Just need to get more people on the board to play Genealogy though
