SMT is ok, but i should have specified, hi-scifi. Like Star Trek. Not so much like Cyberpunk.

Yeah Star Ocean, Xeno, and Phantasy Star are pretty much it for that category. And some indie games, like Cosmic Star Heroine.

For a Western indie game styled like a JRPG you have Cosmic Star Heroine.

Oh and Baroque for weird ass creepy cyberpunk.

Its still strange to me i dont see more protests against the ai being used to name targets, find them, decide the acceptable casualties, and executing them in what is basically genocide. They are training ai to do this in war now and that isnt really brought up as an issue anywhere.

NHK had an hour long special on exactly that. But in Japanese and also Japan is one of the most anti-Israel countries outside the Middle East, so yeah, you probably won't see much about it on English language TV.

get rid of save ribbons

Limited saves is a good mechanic if you want to build tension. Part of what makes the original game work is all the limited resources. You are always managing your resources and that includes saves. By limiting saves you get the type of consequences for dying that causes fear. Similar to what Dark Souls mantes to do without actually being a horror game. Nothing makes an enemy scarier than knowing if you die there will be consequences. If you just reload from the last checkpoint right before the enemy appeared it's not really scary.

Technically the entire board game genre of dungeon crawlers is a simulation of D&D dungeons or more appropriately D&D is an expanded version of a dungeon crawl. Dungeon (the original dungeon crawler board game) and D&D were developed at the same time and share a lot of elements, but Dungeon has no real story telling and is much simpler. Personally I really enjoy the Shadows of Brimstone series of Dungeon Crawler board games, but there are tons of them. Technically even Mansions of Madness is a dungeon crawl board game, but it had a lot more story elements to it. Kind of related is the card game Arkham Horror which has a lot of choices and story along with exploration elements. It's a pretty unique card game.

And Descent (mentioned earlier), at least in the second edition, is a very great dungeon crawler board game.

Even if you want to genocide everyone because you're a sociopath, you wouldn't want to use a nuclear weapon right next to your own country for obvious reasons. They're both evil and stupid. I mean look at that hand on Miku, Lost but Singing. If that isn't AI generated than someone should have said something, because a hand can't look like that.

Honestly at this point if it's a popular franchise it probably had a crossover. D&D and LotR had entire sets with mechanics. 40k was like some commander decks as was Walking Dead. A lot of stuff is just variant art like Miku here and Godzilla. There's a bunch of others.

What's a game that requires perfect play? Like as an example of an actual game. Is it games with one hit kills? I would only argue those require perfect play if you have like pixel perfect jumps, dodges, etc. Celeste had some really tough jumps, can't remember if they were pixel perfect, but it also had extensive difficulty modifying options. Can't really think of any other super hard one hit kill games right now.

Not really. Things like , and are still used in modern Japanese, just not as often. The biggest one would be the negatives ending in instead of (there was no nn sound in Japanese, it entered to transcribe Chinese loanwords, over time some Japanese words that had n sounds like also started being pronounced as , but it's way more extensive than what these types of shows have where it's only done on negative verbs).

Reddit unfortunately encourages echo chambers. There are very few neutral subs and they're all smaller. And it isn't just news or politics, literally a gaming sub will have certain group opinions you either share and get a bunch of upvotes or get mass downvoted for having.

The voting system is theoretically supposed to be quality of the post and not I agree/disagree. But in practice it's just the latter. I used to try to help people on the Learn Japanese subreddit, but a lot of fluent speakers would get downvoted for sharing objective stuff by people who literally studied for like a week (Dunning Kruger effect). Just not a good system unfortunately.

It's also one of the most botted sites on the internet. Fake accounts, upvote manipulation, tons of it. Moderation is also completely up to a given sub and can be completely unhinged or just automated by bots.

Shin Megami Tensei is more of a DRPG and those tend to be dark even in Japan. I would say it's only recently they started making a lot of Japanese DRPGs that aren't dark, probably due to the success of Etrian Odyssey.

I was into JRPGs in the late 80s and early 90s. I knew DQV existed in Japan because my cousin was there (and informed me Dragon Warrior was called Dragon Quest there). He got me a copy of it and he didn't really play games and I didn't really understand that this game would be in Japanese (and also not fit in my SNES). Thankfully I figured out how to mod my SNES (aka take some pliers and rip off those hinges), but unfortunately the game was entirely in Japanese. However it was only kana and I using a dictionary managed to get the menus figured out. I was basically ignoring dialogue and just running around doing stuff. Learned some basic words, other people online playing helped form early guides (some of them are still on this site). Eventually got Dragon Quest VI as well. I had been reading the dictionary just learning words but still not understanding grammar really, but eventually got a grammar book that helped a lot. Then I wanted to look into other Japan only RPGs and SMT was recommended a lot. That was a massive undertaking as it has kanji (unlike DQ) and a lot of complex words (but English menus lol). I had an N64 and not a PS1, so I basically missed that generation, but I bought a PS2 with money from my first job and modded it by removing the front (it's like a disc swap technique) to play imports. After that I started basically only playing Japanese games outside computer games.
