Shenmue is an interesting choice. It's a bad game by modern standards but I could see it having been pretty influential on action adventure games in Japan.

I'm glad it wasn't just a popularity contest, although as I said before they gave voters carte blanche when it came to criteria so it's pretty meaningless.

Well they save significantly now on distribution, which used to be a major factor in the cost of the final product.

The dumbest game purchase I ever made was Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg for $50 or whatever it was new. Total smelly ass game.

If you don't like $80 games, don't buy them.

Trader Joe's for bakery, prepackaged produce, dairy, and most non-perishables

Sprouts or asian grocer for other produce and bulk bin

Giant (mid-atlantic supermarket chain) for the few random things that I can't get elsewhere.

There are no billboards at all near me.

I was dreading going through this process when I got a newer car a couple years ago but I dodged it all. My mechanic offered to buy it after I told him I was selling. Gave him a decent deal but still got 2x the dealership value.

It's really just nostalgia keeping this from being lower. It is a great concept and a fun diversion for one playthrough but mechanically it has just so many issues.

For example, Para and I have talked about games we think are influential but I'm pretty sure we have different concepts in mind, because I can't see Tetris or Pong at all over something like Doom, The Legend of Zelda, or one of the early RPGs.

BAFTA's definition is meaningless by their own admission. "Influential could mean anything!" It's just going to be a popularity contest.

I thought this topic was to have a serious discussion about the subject. But it is true that nobody in this topic has really established a consensus for what it means for a game to be influential in the first place.

It's probably Super Mario Bros, but it's silly to say there's no argument for anything else. There are plenty of other hugely influential games from that era or earlier.

Wizardry and Ultima are the influence for JRPGs and WRPGs, respctively. The Dragon Quest games (among others) are still doing many of the same things that Wizardry did 45 years ago.

What about Colossal Cave Adventure? It spawned both adventure games and MMOs.

Dune II was the influence for every RTS game that came after, and so then also MOBAs and tower defense. How many casual mobile games have been played by people who have Dune II to thank?

Doom and Quake are the FPS games mentioned here, but those games just took notes from Wolfenstein 3D which was an iteration of Hovertank which was a ripoff of Battlezone, a FPS game from 1980.
