Some 2,300 people joined a demonstration called by the Islamist group Muslim Interaktiv in the northern German port city of Hamburg on Saturday, according to police estimates, after the rally only got the go-ahead from authorities under strict conditions.

The demonstrators gathered in the city's Sankt Georg district near the central railway station on Saturday afternoon amid a heavy police presence. Most of the participants were men, according to a dpa reporter at the scene.

The protest comes after more than 1,000 people attended a rally in Hamburg called by Muslim Interaktiv last month which passed off peacefully but participants had made calls for a caliphate.

The protest sparked nationwide outrage in Germany and denunciations from leading politicians. Muslim Interaktiv is classified as an extremist group by the German authorities.

As a result, authorities only let Saturday's rally, held under the motto "Against censorship and the dictatorship of opinion," go ahead under strict conditions, including a ban on inciting hatred or violence.

At the beginning of the protest, the conditions were read out aloud in German and Arabic.

In addition, Israel's right to exist may not be denied and Israeli flags may not be burnt or damaged, police said on Friday.

It is also forbidden to call for a caliphate in Germany in word, image or writing. At the previous demonstration on April 27, the words "Caliphate is the solution" could be read on signs. Speeches also called for a caliphate as a solution to social problems in Islamic states.

A caliphate is a religious state under a spiritual leader, a caliph, who claims succession from the Muslim prophet Mohammed. Contrary to the organizer's wishes, Saturday's event was only allowed to take place as a stationary rally, with no march planned, according to the police. The assembly authorities reported a counter-demonstration with 100 participants.

A House Republican has told Newsweek why she is introducing new legislation which would deport any foreign national charged with a crime at "pro-terrorism or antisemitic rallies" anywhere in the United States.

Rep. Beth Van Duyne, from Texas, who has sponsored a proposed amendment to immigration laws, said legislative change is needed due to pro-Palestinian demonstrations on American campuses which she claimed had promoted "violence" and "extremism" with "college after college not responding."

Van Duyne said she decided to introduce her bill after "seeing videos over and over and over again on college campuses where we're seeing an uprising and it just seems to be a growing effort to just push hate, violence, extremism and we just saw college after college not responding."

"Too many colleges have become breeding grounds for violent Marxist hatred for America and our allies, and we shouldn't be putting up with that. We need to send a strong message that their lawless behavior will not be tolerated," she told Newsweek.

"It's time that we deal swiftly and I think decisively for those that come to our amazing country and they incite hatred for America, hatred for the Jewish people, and they despicably demand support for Hamas terrorism which inflicted the worst loss of Jewish life since the Holocaust."

A Michigan township clerk was charged with multiple felonies on Wednesday, the latest turn in a state inquiry into efforts by Donald Trump supporters to tamper with voting machines to prove his false claim that he lost the 2020 election due to fraud.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement that former Adams Township Clerk Stephanie Scott, 52, has been charged with five felonies related to unauthorized use of a computer, concealing a voting machine, and misconduct in office, and one misdemeanor for disobeying the secretary of state. The most serious count carries a potential seven-year prison term.

Nessel also added three felonies to the charges faced by Scott's attorney Stefanie Lambert, who was already facing multiple charges over allegations she accessed and tampered with voting machines in other incidents across the state.

"When elected officials and their proxies use their positions to promote baseless conspiracies, show blatant disregard for voter privacy, and break the law in the process, it undermines the very essence of the democratic process," Nessel said in the statement.

Several X users made posts with such pictures, and on April 24, 2024, the blog Dispatches from Trumpland posted photographs of one such rally, which reportedly took place in Pennsylvania. The same blog had another post about Trump and diapers on April 11.

We noticed that the photographs that circulated all came from Dispatches from Trumpland, so we contacted the writers of the blog to ask for more details about the rallies. The writer replied that the photographs posted on April 11 had been taken at rallies in Greensboro, North Carolina, and Detroit. He added that he took the photographs in the April 24 post himself, in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania.

A sex discrimination lawsuit against Donald Trumps campaign has triggered new accusations that Trumps lawyers have intentionally covered up settlement payments to women, in violation of federal law.

On Friday, watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, demanding an investigation into the alleged cover-up. The complaint cites new allegations from 2016 Trump campaign aide A.J. Delgado, which she lodged in a sworn court declaration earlier this week as part of her ongoing discrimination suit against Trumps political operation.

Delgados filing presented evidence of top Trump attorney Marc Kasowitz openly admitting that the campaign wanted to use a law firm to cover up a potential settlement payout in 2017. The arrangement, as Delgado described it, appears specifically designed to evade the consequences of federal disclosure laws that require campaigns to publicly report the identities of payment recipients.

In other words, the payment would be routed through a middleman, to hide the fact that the Campaign had settled, from the public and the FEC, Delgado stated. I thus have direct, personal experience with the Defendant-Campaign hiding settlement payments to women, routing them through a middleman law firm, which to the public would only appear as payments for legal services.

Delgado also claimed to have information and reason to believe that other campaign payments have hidden settlements with women who raised complaints of gender discrimination, pregnancy discrimination, and sexual harassment. Those payments, she said, are related to the $4.1 million that flowed to Kasowitzs law firm over a two-month period immediately following the November 2020 election, as well as millions in mysterious legal reimbursements to the campaigns compliance firm, Red Curve Solutions, which The Daily Beast first reported earlier this month, prompting a federal complaint.

The declaration is particularly significant in that it captures a direct admission of the campaigns actual intentions behind this middleman arrangementto keep the existence of a settlement from the public, and, by doing so, from the FEC itself.

In a statement to The Daily Beast, CREW president Noah Bookbinder demanded an investigation, saying that Delgados allegations raise serious concerns about a potentially illegal cover-up.

Arizona GOP chairwoman Gina Swoboda called RNC Chairman Michael Whatley on Monday to raise concerns that Arizona was not getting enough resources, according to three people familiar with the call, who like others for this article, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.

Top party officials reassured her that resources would be coming to the state. The AZGOP and the RNC are joined at the hip. Together, we are 110% focused on sending President Trump back to the White House and saving our country, Swoboda said in a statement Tuesday.

Its a different operation that is built by people who win races and have won races, LaCivita said in an interview. As it relates to 2020, they did things their way. Some worked. A lot didnt. But that was then, and this is now.

Since taking over the party in March, Trumps new team says it has reviewed the 2020 operation to identify waste and redundancies. Officials say they have decided not to hire separate political, communications and research operations at the campaign and the national party complaining that in 2020, the RNC and campaign clashed and said the RNC has improved the data operation to better target voters.

Trumps aides say they will build a more narrowly targeted volunteer field program using their successful effort in the Iowa caucuses as a template while taking advantage of a recent Federal Election Commission ruling that will allow them to directly coordinate message and script plans with outside groups who have paid canvassing such as door-knocking. The operation is being run by LaCivita, Blair and Alex Latcham, a former White House deputy political director for Trump.

NEW YORK A prominent transit union leader plans to sue Columbia University over alleged mistreatment of school staffers during a building seizure last week the latest labor group to wade into the debate surrounding campus unrest.

John Samuelsen, international president of the Transport Workers Union which represents 155,000 workers across the airline, transit, railroad, universities, utilities and service sectors castigated Columbia President Minouche Shafik for waiting too long to authorize the NYPD to clear out Hamilton Hall after demonstrators occupied it last Tuesday night.

Its on them to protect their workforce and they didnt do it, Samuelsen told POLITICO. He called dissidents behavior toward staffers working at the time of the takeover, including two custodians and a security officer, an outrageous affront to working people.

One of the unions local branches represents 725 workers at Columbia, including custodians, security officers and electricians.

Officials should have known the building was a target given its history as the site of an occupation by students advocating for racial justice in the 1960s, he charged.

Were exploiting every legal means at our disposal against Columbia, against the individual occupiers of the building [who] thought that they could hold our custodians hostage to their ideology, he added.

The union honcho, who also represents the 44,000-member Transport Workers Union Local 100, insisted he supports students constitutional right to protest.

Samuelsen repeated a claim to which Mayor Eric Adams has been clinging since police officers responded to protests at Columbia and City College: that outside agitators snuck into student encampments and exacerbated tensions.

The NYPD arrested 109 protesters at Columbia and 173 at City College. The mayor has continued to defend the timing of police officers response.

A Columbia spokesperson declined to comment on Samuelsens legal threat.

An organizer for Columbia University Apartheid Divest, the group that was behind the encampment but was not involved in the takeover of Hamilton, told POLITICO they could not speak to the actions committed by or words said by the autonomous group of students who occupied Hamilton.

The vast majority of individuals involved were peaceful and only had the intention of being peaceful and treating people with respect, said the organizer, who was granted anonymity, adding that its the first time theyre hearing about the allegations.

The move represents a significant escalation by one of the most politically active unions in New York state, as Shafik and Adams deal with political fallout from the NYPDs crackdown on protests on campuses. The union has not shied from picking fights with powerful Democrats Samuelson recently launched an attack ad against Gov. Kathy Hochul amid an ongoing disagreement over a union contract.

In a letter to Shafik late Monday morning, Samuelsen urged the president to provide the names of the protesters arrested inside Hamilton Hall, access to footage from the building and information the NYPD gave to Columbia on the number of students who participated in the demonstration as well as outside actors.

He also wants to meet with Shafik and discuss steps to ensure workers safety if the protests resume, as well as compensation for affected union members.

When the custodians told the demonstrators that they wanted to get out of the building, at least one smarmy, sanctimonious, elitist ... occupier in a reference to the Gaza protests and takeover of Hamilton told them they would not be able to exit premises because this moment is bigger than you, Samuelsen alleged in the letter.

The custodians had to then fight their way toward one of the barricaded exits to escape, he said.

The security officer, an African American woman, managed to slip out before the barricades were set up, Samuelsen added. But shes still shaken by her run-in with the demonstrators who verbally attacked her in a very aggressive and extremely offensive manner, he said.

Labor unions have been increasingly weighing in on turmoil afflicting institutions across the country. Shawn Fain, president of United Auto Workers, blasted the mass arrests. Other unions have called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

The Professional Staff Congress, the City University of New Yorks faculty and staff union, on Monday requested that CUNY Chancellor Flix Matos Rodrguez ask Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to drop charges against students and employees.

CUNY faculty recently staged a strike in support of the protest, but the union did not authorize or support it.
