Modern Trails is afraid to be dark I think (to its great detriment), but Sky and Crossbell really weren't.

I honestly don't think anything comes close to Renne's backstory in those games. Maybe Kevin's but that's also Trails 3rd. The cult itself gets mentioned in Zero but the way it's described is way tamer than what's in 3rd.

"Renne sucks."

To elaborate, I don't think she's all that bad a character, but I do find her kind of annoying. She's like the dictionary definition of a "hat on a hat." First she's a spy-type gothic lolita character. Then she's a mech-character. Then she's a hacker. Then she's a redeemed character and kind of just becomes a hanger-on to Estelle and Joshua (weirdly making them less interesting in a way). Then there's her tragic backstory, which still feels like a weird anomaly in a series that is usually afraid to do dark violent stuff. It would be like if there was one episode of Avatar that had r*pe and graphic torture. Also her backstory just kind of "exists" in Trails the 3rd but doesn't really impact any other scene that features Renne in any other game.

I think the writing is on the wall now. Thinking Nuggets in 6. Pretty unfortunate for long-time fans of the team to have to witness all the overhyping and hoopla the media gave us; at the end of the day, we just aren't ready for a title run. Edwards is too young and perhaps after all, KAT isn't going to be the second guy they need.

Everyone's favorite member of the Phantom Thieves summons his persona and becomes... this. He's really into beauty. He can freeze you by your shadows like Peter Pan. He likes to lead the party on wild goose chases following arcane riddles. I assume his name means "blue white" which would make his first name Red obviously. While his rivalry with Oliviert is kind of interesting, I must say his schtick gets old pretty fast. CS4: Playing as him is cool but doesn't necessarily add anything to the character.

It's a tale of two names. First, "McBurn" is the stupidest thing I've heard in a while, stupider than Bleublanc. Is he a Scottish Nobleman? Is he a discarded McDonald's menu item? Is he Scrooge McDuck's drag racing alter ego? Secondly, "the Almighty Conflagration" is trying way to hard. But then again, it's a trails thing. We live in a world with "the Golden Rakshasa" and "the Radiant Blademaster" after all. He burn stuff make go boom. He very strong. CS4: He from a different world and have scary final form. Burninate the countryside indeed.

The hacking doesn't stop there. Just when you think Campanella is some kind of magical fairy being from the dark ages, he/they're also showing up to hack the Crossbell geofront. Still one of the series's big mysteries, it's unclear if we'll ever find out Campanella's deal. My guess is that they're not "real" and are actually some kind of AI for the head honcho of Ouroborous. I also have a bad feeling in my bones that they're going to eventually reveal that Zemuria is a video game in the Xanadu universe, but that's neither here nor there.

Sully is unique in that, as far as I know, she's a completely optional character in Zero and a pretty important character in Azure. So she's one of the few NPC's to graduate from having no face art to having face art (Mireille is another one, but she wasn't optional in Zero). A rags to riches story in many ways. You too can become a dancer even if you're born a Pokemon Trainer.

Pictured here as "Magical Girl Alisa," Alisa is definitely not a "smol girl," but you should go to jail if you want to romance her since she's utterly droll. It's a crime to make the canonical girl this bad. I wonder how much of this is her English VA. I feel bad for her, because I just don't think she's given enough direction. But yeah she's terrible. Also her CS3 and 4 costume is atrocious - get it together Trails. Her arc is also basically "my mom is terrible, *confronts mom,* mom remains terrible, turns into terrible mom."

If I remember right, he had a friend of the family/cousin/babysitter pass away, and lo and behold she has yet to be brought back to life/revealed to be an Ouroborous Enforcer. There's still time I guess. I'm not sure he's ever had fun in his life. Maybe when listening to an opera record alone in his room.

The New Class VII deserves a new Machias, and so we have Kurt. The problem is Class VII is only three people, and then it's only five people. It sucks to be in a three person class and one of them is a complete dud in personality. He's a serious lad who is self conscious about being a slim svelte Vander instead of a chunky one. Dude, it's fine, just enjoy the fact that you're handsome and really good at dual wielding. First world problems.

Other than that he's Crossbell's Josette: a gun-wielding party member who shows up at the end and no one wants to use. He's also kinda sorta part of the Guy Bannings mystery... between he and Sergei they really should've figured it out better than they did.

As the rest of this list will show, I have nothing against strong female characters. What I have issues with is a character who was barely utilized in CS2 suddenly being the strongest person in the world in CS3 and 4. I feel like she wasn't introduced in a way that makes me care about her, and so she just ends up being strong for the sake of being strong. I don't know anything about her other than that she's pretty and strong, and pretty strong.

This guy really gets the crap beat out of him over the series, which definitely puts him above Aurelia. He feels a bit more like a real person, albeit a real person who wears a stupid hat sometimes (and then a real person who wears a stupid mask sometimes). Great VA too. HOWEVER, he's still an overpowered guy who prevents the player from actually feeling like they've achieved anything by coming to the rescue all the time.

Yeah, I said it. Unlike Aurelia, Cassius is introduced in a sympathetic way, and I genuinely like him in CS2, but he's still just too OP for me to take seriously. I get that his OP-ness (say this out loud) is supposed to be juxtaposed with his goofy fatherly nature and his failure to save his wife and all that but I can only take so much Cassius-worship.

Bottom line: I don't like the super-strong supporting cast person who's either 1) never challenged, 2) loses an arm and is still the second strongest person alive, and/or 3) partial to saving the day too much. It's bad writing!

It's kind of weird that these characters had code names (Comrade, G, V, & S respectively). Their actual names are code names too basically, unless their Christian name is Gideon (which I guess is from the bible to be fair).

I put them in this order. They're all kind of Kojima villains. Gideon's just an angry academic who can't get tenure. Vulcan is Vulcan Raven with hair and without the indigenous appropriation. Scarlet's secretly religious and only has one eye. You will regret your words and actions. And by that I mean, you'll regret that Rean saves her in CS2. She's probably the best one though cause she's got layers.

Anyway, the best thing about these characters is that they make you feel bad for Crow. I guess they make you hate Osborne too, but he doesn't exactly need the help.

I feel like Garcia probably has his fans, considering that he's kind of cool in Azure, what with breaking Lloyd out of the pokey and all. On the other hand, can I remember any notable qualities about him besides "strong former jaeger?" The answer's no, and there's a lot of strong ex-jaegers with a bit more presence. Nice face turn though, and I remembered him BEFORE I remembered the actual main villain of Zero (Joachim) who doesn't make the list at all, despite being such a chill fishing dude.

Is drill hair still a thing? I know it was big in anime for a while there. Whatever the case may be, drill hair is one of Mariabell's saving graces. I don't remember if Mariabell actually physically gropes Elie in the way Shirley does but if not physically, she's doing so mentally for sure. She's also really into creepy dolls, which is a major red flag. There's story stuff that makes her kinda sorta interesting but other than that she's one of those anime women whose main purpose is to go "Aaah ha ha ha" every once in a while.

Did this series need yet another blond white guy? I can't tell them apart after a while. One of the major plot points around Prince Cedric is how he was a whiny baby in one game and suddenly wasn't the next. He never actually stops being a whiny baby though. Surely they could've come up with a better character to pilot the red megazord.

Definitely not a suspicious NPC whatsoever. Certainly there's nothing more to this character than being a friendly lawyer. A name like "grimwood" in no way links him to a plan to make a giant spirit tree appear in the middle of Crossbell. In what universe is he actually a mastermind plotting an elaborate plan to get revenge for his family. Also, there's no possible way that once he gets called out for being a villain he'll just immediately give up and say "dang you're right I have been kind of bad haven't I." (Spoilers: yes I know he comes back in Reverie but dang if Azure doesn't have the most anti-climactic ending of all time)

Like Vincent D'onofrio in Netflix's Daredevil series, Dieter Crois has big plans for this city. The geopolitical importance of suzerains is actually kind of interesting, and you can draw all sorts of parallels to Taiwan and Hong Kong if you want, but one thing I know for sure is that if Taiwan wanted to declare independence it wouldn't do so at the expense of big ass monsters roaming the countryside. Crossbell politics is more interesting than this dude, who like Grimwood is just being played. I guess to keep the theme he wants revenge for being constantly threatened by two competing superpowers? Fair enough.

It'd be one thing if the game actually let us hate her like she deserves, but the game wants us to like... forgive her and understand her or something. There's nothing to understand! She makes weapons of mass destruction for money! She treats Alisa like shit! Being a bad person doesn't make you a bad character, but when the game doesn't seem to understand that she's a bad person that's a problem.

Ten Areas of Gameplay Improvements in FFVII-3 (Not in order)

Materia Loadouts - A lot of people are complaining about this because they only keep three people equipped with materia the whole time. This is bonkers and they should feel bad, but sure, let's go ahead and address it for these players.

Summoning - Still looks great and I'm glad they exist, but I NEVER SUMMON. I honestly think they'd be better off just making them instant attacks instead of having them hang out on the battle field. Like it should be backwards from how it currently is. You choose to summon, the bar counts down, and then it eventually goes off.

Weapon Skills - This is improved from Remake but it still feels a bit inconsequential what weapon skills you actually equip.

Folios/Skill Tree - Just make it menu-accessible. Omit the useless skills. Reorder so that abilities/limits can be naturally learned through the main game without major reorganization, and save later stat boosts for hard mode/postgame

Rare Items/Morph and Steal - Actually give enemies rare items that can only be acquired through morphing or stealing them.

Fewer trinkets - "Obtained a fragment of the planet's blessing" is bad. You can keep crafting but don't overload players with materials.

Freeze for synergy/limits - Maybe controversial but these attacks are cool and you shouldn't be able to switch characters out of them. You want to emphasize their impact.

Walking speed - Another big complaint that I didn't think was a big deal but a lot of people do.

Auto heal - Give us an auto-heal function from the command menu for outside combat.

Music selection - Have a soundtrack function so you can listen to whatever music you want whenever.

Hottest AA take I have is that this case "isn't that much worse than" 5-DLC. It is worse though.

It's pretty much the most average case in the series. Inoffensive with some funny moments. Nothing amazing though.
