Didn't mean to abandon the topic, I posted this during my break and went back to work.

To those ragging on the company, I'm not a corporate shill but I don't agree with this hardline "fuck the man" stance. What more do you want them to do? Unless the guy comes in to discuss this or asks for help, there isn't anything else to do. I've done more than I'm suppose to, getting bereavement for a pet is already a nice gesture, and despite the fact he hasn't talked with management (that may have changed today) they are still allowing him to use up vacation time that he hasn't requested.

On that note, some of you seem confused on that. He isn't on vacation, he didn't request the time off and before today nothing was keyed in advance. At his permission, I was covering his missed shifts day to day with vacation time to prevent him from being fired from job abandonment. He never actually talked to a manager, I'm just his supervisor trying to keep his job.

I really don't know what is going through his mind at this point. I don't think he is trying to take advantage of me to burn through his time off before he quits. I've known him for 5 years now, well, I've worked with him for 5 years, can't say I really know him too well, never interacted outside of work. But I've never gotten that kind of vibe from him before. I never saw any behavior that would suggest some mental issues he was having either, not that I would notice though. I don't believe this is just about the cat dying, but I don't fucking know anything.

He sounds... okay during the phone calls I've had, but I'm not someone who tries to pry. If he says he needs more time, I give him more time.

But I'm done inserting myself into this for now, in 6 days I'll follow up and get an update from my boss if they don't tell me something first. I'm moving on from this after that.

Welp, I went above my boss to his boss. She says he isn't wrong but she doesn't want to give up on him just yet. She had the payroll clerk key in his last vacation days and pull his emergency contacts. She will call him herself and try to get him in touch with the care network.

I think this could be true. I've had phone conversations with him, I passed him along the help holiness, but he didn't seem interested and it was awkward as hell bringing it up. Maybe I should call in a wellness check?

I've been skirting the rules by giving him the time off I have been. The sick time is one thing, but even then, I've been scheduling it as time off vs. treating it as calling out. Technically you have to put in a request for that, if I was leaving him to call out he'd need a doctors notice after the third day. And I've been scheduling him vacation time with no request, that is usually something you need to put in a month ahead of time.

Like, we've already been extremely lenient here. Personally I'd just let him burn through his last vacation before giving him the ultimatum, but I don't really disagree with my boss at this point.

And yes, he has been warned about this.

Feels bad but I've done everything I can. He hasn't been to work in three weeks. I got him three days bereavement approved, then I started using his sick/personal time, and when he burned through that I started scheduling him for vacation (with his approval). He still has about 6 days of vacation time left but my boss said enough is enough. If he doesn't show up to work by his next scheduled shift they will consider it job abandonment and terminate him.

I get it, I love my cat, but damn dude. Just getting bereavement for that is a blessing. 11 year employee about to have his life upended over a pet dying.
