I really like Your Lie in April too, particularly because of Kaori. It's interesting to think about her motivations during different parts of the story, how much of her was real vs an idealizied persona she was acting out, and so on.

Edit: Added spoiler tags, why not.

Best way to do this would be to have both LiS1 endings, one in each timeline. They have to do two alternate realities anyway, so this is the one case where it wouldn't necessarily be that much more work.

I'm finding it hard to get excited about this, though. Like the trailer opens with Max saying she swore to never use her power again. That means, no matter which ending in LiS is canon, she made a tough decision, let it stand, and learned a valuable lesson. Now she's just... going to use her powers again? To save this rando girl? I'm sure there will be some narrative BS to justify it but right now I'm just wondering why she's willing to risk it.

Also if Chloe isn't in this game in some capacity and this new girl is a love interest I will fucking riot

Fang was incredibly lucky to outlast Vanille that year. Vanille was powerful enough to eventually win on her own merits, no way Fang ever manages anything outside that very specific set of circumstances.

Speaking as one of the biggest Life is Strange fanboys on the board, I'm not super excited about the new Life is Strange. Really should've used a new character, then I'd be hyped. Max has too much baggage from the first game, too much potential for them to trip over themselves and ruin the new story by disrespecting the old one imo

I fell two weeks behind in most airing shows, caught up in about half of them today. Finally watched Girls Band Cry up to episode 8 (which is still two behind, lousy SobsPlease delay). I could do with fewer embarrassing public shouting matches, but after the Jellyfish debacle I'm really appreciating the way GBC handles drama. I can understand where everyone is coming from even when they aren't all on the same page. Also, Rupa is great. Every band anime from now on needs a Rupa.

Also there's the extra note here that Jellyfish, despite being an anime original, is technically adapted from the scripts for Yuki Yaku's still publishing novels. He's already talked about stuff that had to be cut from the show but will be expanded upon there. There's probably going to be a LOT of content there that we didn't see here given that over a year has passed in the story.
I'd actually be really interested in hearing what was cut. All this recent drama aside, my other big problem with the show is that it has that style of writing where it feels like nothing happens offscreen. Over a year has passed and these girls haven't gotten any closer during it? They haven't already talked through some of their big traumas? It was really blatant in that one episode where they had twitter drama, decided what to do about it... then the screen goes TWO MONTHS LATER and I'm just like wait what happened to the twitter drama during those two months???

It's just...to call Yukine "abusive". I just don't see it (yet)
I mean, at the very least she completely abandoned both her daughters. Maybe abusive isn't the exact right word but it's not far off and it's a good shorthand considering all the other stuff she's done. She's not out there beating them or anything but she's a shitty parent.

Something not being immediately addressed in full in the next episode does not mean it's being ignored

They made it pretty clear that the thing I thought was the main issue wasn't even a problem. Kano doesn't feel betrayed, instead she only feels bad for using Yoru to try and reach her mom. That means the narrative thinks Yoru has nothing to apologize for. With Kiui drama taking over next ep, I guarantee we aren't getting a reckoning for this. In the final episode, Kano will go and see the Sundoll show, see Yoru's work, say "you did good", and they'll hug it out. That's it. Yoru abandoned her friends for selfish reasons to go and work for some pretty objectively terrible people and the narrative just isn't going to explore that I guess.

What bugs me most is that 90% of the show has been building up the relationship between these two. Kano was abandoned by her mother, then it was Yoru's mural that brought her back. Yoru lost her art, then it was Kano's love for it that brought her back. They were doing this together, and doing it for each other. It was great. Then all of a sudden, nope, it was all about Kano's mom. Yoru wasn't doing anything for Kano, she needs the abusive mom's approval to feel good about herself. Kano wasn't doing anything for Yoru, it was all about reaching her mom. Yoru's betrayal didn't hurt because Kano was losing the person she was singing for. It hurt because her mom picked someone else. I thought Kano was sad about losing Yoru. This episode made it clear that she was sad because she lost to Yoru.

I guess it could be argued that I'm misreading the narrative (which was a little condescending but I'll move past it since you said that wasn't your intention). Maybe a rewatch of the entire thing would show that they were always building up to the abusive mom being the focal point of everything (even though she was barely a presence in the narrative until this arc). However, what I loved about Jellyfish was the relationship between Yoru and Kano. They had a great dynamic where they built each other up, but arguably it was kind of unhealthy and codependent. I was expecting this episode to explore what Kano said at the end of last episode. To realize that it was her, not Yoru, who was the jellyfish who can't swim (because she can't do anything without Yoru). I could've gotten behind that if it was coupled with some sort of reckoning for what Yoru did. But nope, it turns out Yoru wasn't even a factor. It was all about the mom. The Kano/Yoru relationship that made me fall in love with the show in the first place, it turns out that never mattered at all.

I guess the TLDR for this whole thing is that I'm angry the show isn't going a certain way, but I'm going to have to accept that it never intended to go that way in the first place. And that bugs me because it was doing such a great job going that way. If they intended to go this direction instead, they did a terrible job setting it up and it's just... an unsatisfying way for the story to go, in my opinion.

This one I can't even begin to understand lol. Everyone was either so incredibly endearing this episode or was tragic, Mei in particular was so earth shatteringly heartfelt, cried watching an anime for the second time with week.

We'll have to agree to disagree!
We probably should just agree to disagree but I quickly wanted to explain why I hate everyone now because I need to rant about this somewhere.

It looks Yoru's betrayal is going to go entirely unaddressed, but that's fine because Kano doesn't actually give a fuck about Yoru. Kano is only sad because she couldn't impress her mom. It turns out her motivation for the entire show was her mother, which wasn't set up at all vs all the setup that went towards her relationship with Yoru, which no longer matters. They completely invalidated the only parts of the show I enjoyed. But all of THAT is fine because JELEE has no reputation anymore. Mei tanked it with her horrific singing. None of their fans know or care about the behind the scenes nonsense, all they heard was fingernails across a chalkboard for two minutes. Given that I muted it after thirty seconds and resented having to keep watching for the visuals, I'm betting 95% of their fanbase is gone now. But, even if they aren't, I'm sure this upcoming Kiui drama will be the final nail in their coffin. Who the fuck is Kiui freaking out about messaging her? She has no friends, no acquaintances. She should care the least out of everyone about having her identity revealed. Can't wait for a whole episode to be wasted on that.

Ok rant over.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I couldn't disagree more. I thought a bit during the week of all the ways they could continue after last episode, but they managed to find a different way that was worse than all of them put together. What an absolute dumpster fire. I went into this episode only hating Yoru and exited it hating everyone.

Finished the Summer 1985 anime in my seasonal project. 3/120 done, aw yeah.

Dirty Pair was good. It's a sci-fi anime about two women who get hired to take care of various jobs (investigating murders, taking down criminal organizations, etc). It's extremely episodic, which I appreciated. While some of the episodes sucked super hard, like one where a group of literal children took over a military base somehow, they were all still creative short stories. Quite a few of the episodes were really enjoyable, too!

This anime has some shortcomings. I would've preferred it if the main duo were more skilled. My favorite episodes were the ones where they saw everything coming and prepared for it, which let them pull off some impressive feats against their enemies. Sadly, it was far more common for them to be genuinely surprised and just... be fine, because of plot armor. It was crazy how many times they were caught in an ambush and survived hails of gunfire from all sides. One time they blundered into a building rigged to explode and then just climbed out of the rubble, uninjured. This is primarily a comedy, but stuff like that still really killed the tension.

Thankfully, Dirty Pair had something else to make it enjoyable! I really loved the main characters, Kei and Yuri. They had a great friendship, the kind where they talk shit about each other constantly but only because of how close they are. It was funny seeing the sheer levels of collateral damage they managed to cause on their missions. These girls have accidentally destroyed planets. I was also a big fan of how sex-positive they were. I feel like it's rare for anime to have women so blatantly cruising for hunks and being so open about wanting to get laid. I also liked how they still had standards. Sometimes they'd find a guy attractive, then he'd get too forward or creepy and immediately get a boot to the face.

One other thing I wanted to mention, one episode had probably the most positive trans representation I've ever seen in an anime. For something that's (sadly) still a hot-button issue nearly forty years later, it was great seeing this anime from 1985 handle a trans character so well.

I thought I would finish Dirty Pair tonight, but it turns out there's an entire second season, two hour-long OVAs, and a full-length movie that aren't on Crunchyroll. Man, why are older anime always so long? I've downloaded the rest of Dirty Pair now... well, except for a reboot series from the 90s because apparently it sucks. It'll just be a few days before I finish this 1985 anime, the earliest entry in my seasonal watch project.

Speaking of that project, I expanded it into a few more seasons. Now it has 120 anime between 1985 and 2023, which is a nice even number so I doubt I'll add any more. I'm just going to list the new ones in case anyone wants to warn me away from any of them. These all feel super obscure though. I've never heard of them before.

-His and Her Circumstances (Fall 1998)
-Serial Experiments Lain (Summer 1998)
-All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (Winter 1998)
-Vampire Princess Miyu (Fall 1997)
-Flames of Recca (Summer 1997)
-Eat-Man (Winter 1997)
-Martian Successor Nadesico (Fall 1996)
-The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (Winter 1993)

I'd definitely choose an anime over that live service game that got meme'd on for being awful. I'd probably choose the one good Suicide Squad movie over either of those though (it was made by the same guy who did GotG I think? That's one of the only two Marvel movies I've seen and it was pretty good).

Terra is my favorite character in VI. She learns how to love (and I was glad it wasn't romantic love because VI proved with Locke/Celes it didn't know how to write that). The stuff with the orphans was the best part about her, that was her big moment where she took initiative! She found people who made her feel love and wanted to protect them. Pre-character development Terra wouldn't have cared about those kids at all.
