Hey Smuffin, how about taking the government out of marriage completely?

Government just does civil unions, churches and such do marriages.

Thus marriage has no governmental standing on its own, while civil unions have no religious standing of their own. Then the individual religious groups can determine what they believe marriage is.

Yeah, this is exactly what I want. Once again, moving it from the federal level to the state level is the first step. If people desire to "marry" they can do so through a church if they'd like, and the marriage would be recognized by/legislated by the rules of that particular church. If they'd like to sign a formal contract that the government would enforce, they could do that too, but that would be similar to any legal arrangement and every case would not have to be the same.

Let me as you a question though, what is the stated reason for the government to "recognize marriages" at all? As I said, the only one I can think of is to promote what the state views as morally correct behavior. If that's the stated reason, why shouldn't they be able to ban gay marriage? If we're allowing the government to make a value judgment that "married" is better than "not married" then why can't they also make a judgment that "opposite sex married" is better than "same sex married"?

If some of you are gay, then that would make sense, it's not an insult, just trying to reason with the way you're thinking. The Bible says to worship God. Rick Perry is just expressing himself as a Christian, which he has the right to. If I were in the Middle-East, I'd expect Islamics to expect that I'll be respectful about their religion and not bash them while trying to make expect ions.

I...fail to see how being homosexual is a sin. >_> Its a sin to live how you were born? You don't "choose" one day to be gay. Its just how your body works. If you're not attracted to the opposite sex, then you're just simply not attracted. You can make friends, but if you force a relationship you'd be lying to yourself and the spouse.
