I agree with the sentiments in the opener that we should make the most of the contest. I don't, however, feel that Batman has any chance whatsoever to beat Link. Batman's absolute ceiling is slightly above Arkham Asylum. Acting like throwing him and a bunch of weaker guys in and expecting them to do anything is ridiculous, and the only reason we're even discussing it is because everyone seems so desperate to find anyone who can possibly beat Link. This feels like a less extreme version of the WWF No Mercy hype that happened, where a small core of people who were passionate about a shared common interest managed to convince each other that the next great thing was about to happen before finding out that they thought very differently from the rest of the site and everything fell apart.

I have a karma battle entry that is still perfect and I'm looking to finish in the top 2 for the private board. If I get it, I'll offer it to be a centralized area for the gurus to coordinate efforts to influence future contests for the better (to make up for the low quality of the current one) or coordinate noms or discuss contest stuff in general if people are interested in that.

Right now I need your help. I'm wondering what I should take in order to maximize my chances of finishing in the top 2. This is partially contingent on how many other karma entries are in the top 50, which I'm unsure of (but I know it can't be that many).

Right now I have a 10% pick with Link/Ganondorf with 60-69%. If Bacon had allowed specific 5% blocks I probably would have taken something like 62-66.99%, but the split came right at the 65% mark which made me uneasy enough to retreat back to 10%, which I'm thinking might be enough to get me in the top 2 karma entries.

But what you you do, board 8? Am I not being gutsy enough, and I should go for a 5% pick at 60-65%? Advice is appreciated.

Would people be interested in a board betting contest with differing odds on the characters instead of spreads? So, for example, Snake/Liquid might get 1:11 odds while Crono/Lavos gets 10:1 odds.

I'm also thinking of allowing bets during a match- the odds would be updated after the freeze, the 1 AM update, the 3 AM update, the 11 AM update, the 8 PM update, and the 11 PM update, and you would be allowed to make a new bet after the odds were updated until the next update. No bets between the beginning of the match until the first odds update of course.

I think this could be a good idea, largely because the spread betting format as-is was basically like a less-specific Oracle contest. The only downside is if it becomes too easy to predict straight-up winners in this contest, then it could get a bit boring, but every contest has given us something unexpected and I see no reason for that to change now.

Being a longtime (10+ years) fan of the Bills and Lions, I was telling all my friends that there was no way either of them were for real, going so far as to take Pats - 16.5 against my Pats-loving friend and Vikings PICK against the Lions. At one point each team was losing by at least 20. I'm still not convinced that either team is for real. Too many years of rooting for both of them has taught me not to believe.

But today is a good day.

or the league could be 'everyone go play on isotropic and post stories and whoever gets the most cool stories is league champion' with the advantage being that we have retroactively started.

serious answer: league, not tournament. I think about half of us are looking to improve, and playing one game won't help with that.

I just played my first game on Isotropic. I bought a Chancellor and won.

Ok fine, I tied, but it said it was a shared victory so we're going with that. Also Chancellor didn't help me very much, I think I used him like once after buying him, but to be fair that's probably due to horrible mismanagement on my part and buying too many cards that didn't give +1 action.

Bump.

Wii > 64 > SNES > DD > DS > Arcade: GP > SC

Arcade GP was surprisingly fun and true to the spirit of Mario Kart.

Why does everyone hate the Wii version so much? I've never figured that out. Sure it's got massive rubberband-effect, but all of them have that, and if you're playing Mario Kart as a test of skill then you're playing the wrong game. Wii was the most accessible to non-gamers, and if you hate the wheel you don't have to use it.

For those who have never played before, here's a link to the Dominion page at the Rio Grande Games website. Near the bottom right of the page is a pdf of the rules, which are a decent length but have an abridged tl;dr version running down a sidebar on the right for people who can't be bothered to read entire paragraphs.

http://www.riograndegames.com/games.html?id=278

If you want the rules for the expansions, poke around their site. There are rules pdfs for those as well.

Lastly, here's a full card list for those who want to see all the cards Tom is talking about.

Awesome, I've just gotten into eurogames in the past two months and this is the one I was looking to try next. I don't own it and have never played it, but I downloaded and read the rulebook and was thinking of jumping into an online game later with the expectation of being horrible. However, now that Tom is putting this out, I am going to wait and learn the TB school of Dominion and become a master dominion strategist, undoubtedly leading to the proliferation of a new post-Bombadil metagame that revolves around aggressive KC/Throne/Council Room strategies.

Oh yeah, I heard Gauntlet Legends for GNC was good. This group has played Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles and enjoyed it despite its flaws, and I was looking for some other similar titles and apparently Gauntlet Chronicles is supposed to be like that but better in a lot of respects. How old/available is it? I'd theoretically need to drive to some gamestop and buy it today, and if I can't then it's regrettable out.

Castle Crashers seems to be enjoyable, and is definitely short enough, but it seems a little strategically lacking. Is it a brainless beat-em-up or does it have some interesting things going on?

Also worth noting, one of the two friends gets motion sickness and can't play first-person games without getting sick, so none of those please.

Thanks for the ideas so far.

Some of my old friends are coming in from out of town for today only, and my friend and I will probably be playing games with them. Their favorite genre by far is RPG, specifically JRPGs; to put things in context ,they thought FFXIII was good. However they're not too picky in what they like, anything that's an RPG you can play as a group would be fine. It doesn't even necessarily have to be multiplayer, but it has to be engaging for the three who aren't playing at any given time. Please suggestions to the Wii, Gamecube, PS3, PS2, DS, GBA, and N64, because that's all we have right now.

I immediately thought of Tales of Symphonia, but from what I hear that doesn't have 4-player co-op the whole time. It's also way long; we probably have like 10 hours tops over the course of the weekend (which limits choices I know, but we don't necessarily have to finish it, it just has to be good but at the very most an hour and a half in and be enjoyable until we have to break up the group)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you actually play Magic: the Gathering, duels 2012 will make you cry. You seem like you know this already so I won't go into why. Deck editing has a lot to do with it.

The game you are looking for, I believe, is Spectromancer. It was designed by Richard Garfield, creator of Magic, and a few other guys who worked on Magic at one point or another and really know what they're doing. It doesn't have a large number of cards, but the game is set up to not require a lot of them. The third expansion does contain a deck editor, although the game really runs almost as well without one (I never thought I'd say that about any game ever, but just trust me on this). It's definitely worth checking out.

As for board games, Greed Corp is a hex based strategy and it's fun, kind of like Settlers of Catan meets Risk-but-good. Also, I hear Frozen synapse is kind of a turn-based game and it's supposedly really good, but I've never played it or seen footage of it so I don't know for sure.

I've never played it, but watching my non-gaming friends all play it and discover what it feels like to get into a game for the first time has been awesome.
