It's not 1992 anymore but the voters still act like it's the 90's so Mario/Sonic should still be quite strong.

The lower end of the poll probably isn't very reliable. The characters there will suffer from large amounts of SFF and the low vote counts means a small joke rally can get a joke character above more legitimate characters.

I don't think this match has really defied trends that much. Pokemon opened with a huge board votes, Cloud dominated the fight night vote followed by both going roughly even during the day. However it is rare that we see characters with such extreme trends in a match together. That board vote was just crazy considering Cloud/Sephiroth and Red/Blue are roughly equal in strength.

Nothing could be done about the finals in this contest. It's not like Link getting 58% on Cloud or smashing Pokemon is all that more interesting than Link killing Mario.

Except the whole point of the contest was for Cloud/Sephiroth to have a chance against Link. While the bracket could have been made better we can't make changes like that because we didn't know at the time.

You could place Link and Cloud anywhere in the bracket and they would meet up eventually. If Cloud wasn't able to make it to Link, he was never going to beat Link. However, the match Cloud loses in would probably be a good one as opposed to getting killed by Link. You are right that pre-contest there was no way to know that Cloud/Sephiroth could have been given a much better path. No one was supposed to be able to challenge them except Link.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Do you mean having Red fight Mario and Blue fight Bowser? I'm not sure if that would be allowed.

I would imagine Sony was advertising their online service with the disclaimer that it could end at anytime for any reason. Providing online service has an active cost involved so it's not something that you can reasonably expect to last forever.

For those who don't know, OtherOS was a feature that came with older PS3 that allowed the installation of alternate operating systems like Linux. Sony released a firmware update that removed the feature which forced PS3 owners to make a choice between keeping OtherOS or continuing to use any features that required an updated firmware. A class action lawsuit was filed regarding Sony removing a feature that people have already paid for but it has failed.

I don't think this match really says anything about Sora or Squall. Also keep in mind Sora nearly lost to Dante in the previous round which is a step down from where Sora used to be.

Sora isn't going to do as well percentagewise once the ASV starts to fade. On top of that, the number of voters per hour will start to fade as well. Sora barely staying on pace during the ASV isn't really that good and Sora is actually slightly behind pace right now.

66 cut in the first 40 minutes of the ASV? He'll drag Squall below 51% and no more. Would still expect Squall to win by over 1000.

65 of that came from the last 10 minutes which is the problem for Squall.

The last 30 posts or so show just how desperate people are for a match in this contest. Willing to grasp on to the slenderest of hopes.

Unless the previous close matches, the trends actually call for an outside chance at the upset. While I'm still confident in Squall, I think a match like this would get discussing in any contest not just because this one lacked upsets.

But what really changed for Alucard vs Frog though? This site loves jRPGs, and Dracula is weak. I don't think Alucard's last match was all that impressive. And if we're going to compare games CT is obviously a lot stronger than SOTN.

Chrono Trigger the game is really strong but Frog and Magus aren't. Dracula is an unknown and Alucard is way stronger than Frog or Magus. Alucard/Dracula weren't that impressive against Phoenix/Edgeworth but Frog/Magus nearly lost to Chell/GLaDOS. Frog/Magus were only slight favourites over Alucard/Dracula to begin with in the Guru and most seem to believe it's going to be a fairly close match.

Mario is a very high mark to beat. Even when Charizard went on a tear last contest, Mario stopped him cold. Charizard overperformed by quite a bit but still cleanly lost. Red/Blue still have a chance if they build up a bandwagon but it's going to be very tough to actually win.

Guru contest is based on what we thought pre-contest. Red/Blue over Samus is a Guru upset but you won't find too much support for Samus winning anymore.
