That being said, I can explain a lot of things wrong with MP1, mostly dealing with the level design. MP2 has MUCH better level design, imo. And MP3 gets points for being the only Wii game that doesn't just use motion well, but uses motion to make its controls BETTER than a regular control could.

There's quite a few Wii games that do this. Including the other 2 Primes, in a way!

From: GuessMyUserName | #058
Metroid 1 is an unplayable wreck.

Just play Zero Mission, it turns the worst game in the franchise into the second best. (behind Super)

Hey, no. Metroid is not unplayable. It's perfectly playable. How can you not play it? Unplayable is Big Rigs. That word gets thrown around a lot, but it shouldn't be. Regardless of how much the rest of the series improves on the formula, Metroid doesn't stop being good. It's arcadey fun. Probably the weakest game in the series, but worth a look. It's a NES game, and that's about all that's wrong with it. Still a fun time, worth a look. Very hard. So if you like that sort of thing, go for it.

From: Jeff Zero | #062
I was looking at pics for Zero Mission just now and stumbled upon this:

I assume there's a story behind it, but it cracked me up

One of the most heartfelt moments in the series. Great part right there.

The entire Prime trilogy is great. Play all of those. 2 is the weakest but still excellent.

As for 2D games, Super Metroid and Zero Mission are the best. But really, the whole series comes recommended. Some are better than others, but all are pretty good.

RPGs are huge, though, and have been pretty much as long as gaming's been around. It's also a massive catch-all term, and "RPG" really covers about 5 or 6 wildly different genres. Taking gaming as a whole, I'd say the RPG is probably the single biggest genre, in terms of number of major releases.

Alright, just need to wait for my copy of The Last Story to arrive then.

Love how they've been promoting these three games together. There was actually a colletor's edition box and artbook for the three with Pandora's Tower preorders at HMV, but unfortunately it had a very limited print. I bet those will fetch a price. But anyway, it's a nice way of acknowledging the fans without going too far. This wouldn't have happened without the Operation Rainfall shenanigans.

Oh yeah, want.

Well, this album should quell the complaints of not enough songs intended for the characters they were given to.

It seems clear to me that based on this album, there simply weren't enough appropriate, high quality songs for the trolls. Looks like the human kids definitely won out! Red Disc is my favourite so far, of Side 1. Mainly because I am in love with the melody of Atomik Ebonpyre.

Guys, the MGS story has always been abominable, with the exception of 3's. If this game takes it from just plain bad to ironically bad, I'm all for it. I'll probably find this game's story much more entertaining than the dire previous plots in the series.

My main concern is the gameplay. Not that it isn't MGS-I wasn't expecting it to be, but it just doesn't look that promising even on its own.

But I have to say, that art is pretty bad indeed. Worse than the vast majority of major webcomics I've seen, and by a long way. The CDI Zelda comparison is pretty accurate.

This isn't true. The PS3's R&D and cost a couple of billion, as well as the first couple of years when it was sold at a loss, but the gaming division in Sony has been profitable for years. It's one of the few areas within the company as a whole that's doing well, which is why Sony is restructuring with a priority on gaming, as well as a couple of others, over some of their less profitable areas. The PS3 from a pure profitability standpoint hasn't been good, but it isn't still costing them money. The PSP was a big source of profit, too. Sony's game division is fine, it's their TVs that are doing especially poorly, and costing them billions of dollars.

Nope, they still lost money on their gaming division last year. However, they made money on their consoles and software, they simply lost it all through other expenses. It was the same with Nintendo last year. There's a lot more to turning a profit than just making money on your consoles and games. That said, you're certainly correct in that Sony's games division is doing the least badly. Incidentally that's why Sony push 3D and HD and all this other stuff-to move expensive TVs. That's what I don't like about Sony's business model in the games industry, it's just a cynical marketing ploy for other products.

...More so than everyone else's, that is.

But that's a completely different issue.

Since when did the Gamecube have RPGs? There's like three that are any good.

Exactly.

Seriously the PS2 RPG situation was really really bad here until after the PS2's time. We got Square games and that's about it. Besides, the Gamecube had more than that, like Lost Kingdoms. But my main point was that all it needed was that small handful of good RPGs to beat the PS2's nigh non-existant library. Things were different in other regions, but I am talking from my perspective.

Things did improve eventually though.

Anyway, on the subject of lists:

I hate to invoke 4chan in anything, but these two might help:

http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/Playstation_2
http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/Nintendo_DS

Now not all of those games are good, but recommended. That's what the metacritic text colour is for. Definitely worth checking out that entire wiki if you want to compare libraries and get game recommendations.

I don't think the PS2 wins RPGs. Especially from my perspective, if we take region locking into account. A lot of great PS2 RPGs didn't make it to Europe, in fact it took until 2007 for the PS2 to overtake the Gamecube in RPG terms. But either way I think the DS offers a better RPG selection. The remakes and ports help.

Speaking of the DS, I think the 3DS wins for sheer good games/time available ratio. Best first year ever, I don't think anyone will dispute.

The DS name is clearly a godsend.

I want to say the DS. Not just for the quality of its library, but also the diversity of experiences. You get far better variety with the DS library than you do with the PS2 (not that the PS2 was lacking in that regard, but comparatively...).

Beyond that I have no preference.

It still sold like 3 million copies. But yeah, late N64 game. It was never going to do that well. Especially since it required the Expansion Pack. It's just that the average sales for Zelda are quite high.

My sources [VGchartz] indicate that SS is still about a million short of WW, and has just surpassed MM.

Wow, that source also indicates TP is the highest selling Zelda game, surpassing even OoT with GCN and Wii taken together.

Of course OoT comes out on top again if you throw in 3D with it.

Yeah.

VGChartz isn't very reliable. Figures from Nintendo themselves reveal that SS sold 3.42 million in 2011 alone. VGChartz says it's only sold 3.18 million now. I know who I'm trusting.

Hard proof: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2012/120127e.pdf#page=7

Yeah VGChartz is alright for estimates if there's nothing else to go on but they're usually off, often way underestimating sales.

lol

I enjoy the Wii, not a perfect console but it has some great games. I mean, nobody will deny that what are perhaps some of the best games ever made are on Wii (SMG, SS, Xenoblade). It's also done a lot for the medium in a positive sense. Frankly, bringing gaming into the mainstream was a good thing and the Wii helped that along. I'm not saying it's perfect, there's some bad shovelware on there and I wish more companies had made as good use of motion controls as games like SS did. But I don't hate the Wii, and that's an honest opinion you have no right to discredit me for.

Liquid Wind is factually wrong. I'm sorry, but there's no way to argue this. And while we're at it, on what authority do you say that both games disappointed fans? Your own? Is that what is true, or what you want to be true? Many consider SS to be one of the best Zelda games, let's not confuse a vocal minority with the majority.

As opposed to the Wii attack force?

Look, it's not about defending the Wii, it's about calling out Liquid Wind when he blatantly lies. And attacking fan myopia is good too.

Besides, the PS3 lost way more money than Nintendo has. To give you an idea of just how bad it was, it singlehandedly cancelled out the profits from the PS2's peak. It still hasn't recovered, either. Despite sales picking up Sony's gaming division is still losing billions, just as much if not more than Nintendo is. Not to mention the even greater, massive losses the rest of the company is suffering. It's not Nintendo who need to worry, it's Sony. And a few hundred people voting in a poll doesn't change that. In the end what matters is cold, hard cash. No matter how much people on a message board like the PS3, it doesn't change the fact that it's a colossal business failure and combined with all their other mistakes, Sony might honestly fold. Nintendo have dipped a little this year but they're projected to recover soon and start making a net profit again in a few months. Sony haven't made a net profit in years.

It's still the fastest selling Zelda ever. It's beating every other title in the series on a week-to-week basis. It won't keep that up most likely, but it certainly counts.

Seriously, I think this (and the poll itself) shows that fans tend to live in their own little worlds where what they think SHOULD be the case IS the case. They're overestimating the importance of their own opinions.

SS was a huge success. It's still keeping up the sales to an extent, better than TP did. It's doing a fair bit worse in Japan, but that's more due to the death of console gaming in that region.

Saying otherwise just means that you're in denial.

Edit: Seriously, SS has sold almost a million more than TP had at this stage in its life cycle. Now it won't overtake TP because TP had amazing legs on account of coming out at the start of the Wii's life, but it's not because of word of mouth any more than it is simply the decline of the Wii. They could market it with the Wii U, I suppose (see: Pokémon Black and White and the 3DS) but they probably won't do that. I'm digressing though, my point is that your post there was pretty much a massive and blatant lie.

That one's not the best feet for Jake, but it's not like there's no possible way it could have been Jake's theme. It's obviously going for a tropical island/goofy action kind of vibe. But I can do it the other way, too, there's a bunch of songs that only vaguely fit what who they're trying to represent. Does Cobalt Thief really fit Vriska? No, not really. How about Indigo Heir for Equius? Sorta??? I just don't get the point of doing a fanmade character-theme album if you switch everything around and say "yeah good enough." I'm not knocking the quality of the songs but they obviously received a lot more diverse of a selection than 50 Karkat songs.

Eh. Regardless I guess I just don't care for the album in general as much. There are some good songs, particularly in the last half of the album, but there's also a bunch of meh tracks in there.

Cobalt Thief absolutely fits Vriska. It's different to the stuff she normally gets, but that's exactly why it's so good, and it's why it's such a good fit. Vriska is a multifaceted character and this song fits the parts that pretty much none of her previous tracks covered. That's why it's one of my favourites.

Anyway, it's clear that they didn't have any appropriate high quality songs for the characters they wanted to portray. And frankly, if the changes fit, especially for the better, why shouldn't they make those changes?

Thing is, this isn't just a fan album, it's also designed to reflect certain themes by the creators, not just the fans. So obviously they need to make some changes to fit those themes. And I personally prefer it this way.

then again, this is a site that dumped on AC2 and still gave it a 9.1 or something. not sure why people put so much stock into GT reviews besides their technical value and the voice.

Yeah it's hardly an overreaction. 9.3 is exactly what I was expecting from the review, and I was a bit concerned before it came out that it would be lower because GT are kind of obsessed about technical details.

Scores are important, btw. They summarise what the reviewer thought of the game as a whole rather than focusing on a simple list of positives or negatives.

So you're saying a cult game is more popular than cult series? I suppose it can happen every now and then. Persona is pretty popular all things considered, especially in Japan. It's not just restricted to gaming either since it has manga, figurines, anime series and other merchandise. The anime of Persona 4 is selling exceptionally well and is likely to hit about 375-400k volumes sold by the time it's done. Xenoblade has hype and good reception, but so did P3 and 4. I'll believe the popularity exceeding those series if I see anything to indicate it.

You have to remember Xenoblade has a different situation in NA too since Europe and Japan didn't restrict where it was available for sale as far as I know. I've seen people saying GameStop's only ordering enough copies to cover pre-orders too and Nintendo's online store won't ship the game until a couple weeks after it release. I don't think many people expect it to do well since Nintendo itself doesn't seem to want to give it an opportunity to do so. We'll just have to wait until it releases and see how it goes.

Xenoblade isn't really cult. Persona is cult. Xenoblade kinda sits on the cusp, in the space occupied by things like No More Heroes and Okami. And Persona 4.

And yes, Xenoblades sales were restricted in Europe-at first. I've said this before, but it got a very limited first shipment that only went to dedicated game stores because Nintendo apparently weren't expecting it do very well. They were wrong as this sold out entirely in about 3 days. So they gave it more, larger shipments (some of which sold out anyway) which went to more stores. Now it doesn't seem like the second part will be possible to Gamespot exclusivity, but if there is demand, and there probably will be, Nintendo will print more shipments if these sell out. It's just simple supply and demand. There'll certainly be demand, too.

Even Europe's combined with Japan's lifetime Xenoblade sales don't beat Tales of Xillia's week 1 sales from what I see. It looks like it's around 130-160k for Japan and Europe each. It just seems much more reasonable to expect Xenoblade to perform around the same in NA rather than doubling or tripling EU and JPN imo also when you factor in that it really doesn't have the selling power or popularity of other established niche JRPGs like Tales of and Persona worldwide.

Lifetime sales in Japan are pretty meaningless due to how insanely frontloaded games in Japan are. The first week sales are always a significant portion of the lifetime unlike everywhere else.

Furthermore, the game already has more preorders in the US than it has sold copies in Japan lifetime >_>.

Games like this always sell the best in the US, especially with the hype surrounding it.

And frankly, you really can't compare Persona to Xenoblade. With the possible exception of 4 (and I've seen conflicting sales figures on that one) that's a true cult series. Xenoblade is way more popular. I'd argue that it's more popular than Tales outside of Japan, too, but we need to wait and see for the US sales.

But yeah, Symphonia was the only Tales game that was a hit internationally. And that sold about as well in the US as it did in Japan and Europe combined. It can happen. The US is a huge market with a massive population, and the biggest market in terms of sheer numbers for JRPGs. I stand by my previous prediction.

This too. You have to remember it's not a huge title even as far as JRPGs go and Nintendo's not hopeful for it in NA. By the time most people have bought it and/or the copies are out its NA sales will probably be around half of what Tales of and Persona get at best.

Ha, what. The only Tales of game to sell 1 million was Symphonia, the rest don't come close. This will probably outsell them worldwide. Same for Persona, too, though 4 sold pretty well...

I'm expecting about 7-800,000 for Xenoblade worldwide. Pretty respectable, and better than the examples you mentioned.

And yes, I can see this selling really well in America. Pre-orders have apparently been really good, and there's no way Nintendo wouldn't print more if demand existed. That's exactly what happened in Europe. It was originally supposed to have a limited run, then came out and somehow topped the charts...

And it's like it started to gain praise once it got its name changed to Xenoblade, hmmm......

It's funny, because it's absolutely nothing like Xenogears or Xenosaga in terms of design or story, beyond some recurring themes. And frankly, it's better for it.

It started getting praise when people actually played it.

This extends to the graphics, too. The graphics don't come across very well in screenshots, but when you see them in game, it becomes clear that despite the low-res textures, this is one of the best looking Wii games. In fact, it has good graphic regardless of platform.

Dat draw distance.

The best part, though, is that unlike games like FFXIII where you're shown pretty vistas then can't actually go there, in Xenoblade, almost everything you can see, you can explore. And there's a lot to see!

Yeah basically this game turned out to be the polar opposite of expectations.

Best RPG of the generation, certainly.

It's not your usual JRPG, however, which is why swordz might think it doesn't appeal. A lot of JRPGs a much more narrative driven, while this one is more about creating an engrossing world, like say, Skyrim.

It's just as much about the gameplay as it is about the story. Actually, much moreso about the gameplay. If you want your JRPGs to be glorified visual novels or anime with mandatory button presses, then it might not be for you.

But the reason it's so much better than any modern RPG (besides just being really, really, well made) is that while it's about both gameplay and story, it doesn't skimp on either. It has the strong core experience that's lacking from most WRPGs, and the expansive world and complex customisation lacking from most JRPGs.

It's pretty much the perfect RPG as a result. It has some niggles, but for sheer game design, it's pretty immaculate.

Well immortal, literally, means "not mortal", meaning that whoever is immortal cannot dies, because otherwise they would be mortal. Hard to kill, yes, but mortal.

It's not true immortality unless you can't die.

Immortal, by definition, means that you cannot be killed. It does not necessarily make you invulnerable to harm however.

I'm trying to preorder right now because it seems good and if it's rare, I can definitely resell it for mega profitzz later, and the art book is good too. Also there is AT LEAST one Shimomura song in it, so that's enough for me.

Shimomura was the lead composer for the entire project (though there were quite a few involved). So there's quite a lot of her work on there.

And believe it or not, it's not even the best the game has to offer. ACE+ so good.
