Disappointing perhaps, but I wouldn't call DKC3 a "depressing" follow up. It's still a solid game, it just pales in comparison to 2.
I'd personally say Sonic Heroes. It just ruined almost everything, especially the character Shadow the Hedgehog(you can't tell me he'd be anywhere near as hated if he was only in Adventure 2). People get fixated over race as opposed to the fact that a young male was shot and killed for a dubious reason. I don't remember the exact time I got Life 3 on my first playthrough of the game, but I imagine it's not too strange for players to go to the tower before getting that spell.

I mean, you climb up this tower with increasingly annoying foes. You're pretty restricted if you haven't given enough characters good magic. The boss itself changes resistances every time you hit it and can deal some pretty nice damage itself. When you finally think you're beating him, then you start thinking "Yeah, I've got this in the bag".

Gold/Silver had Falkner. Up until this point, you've probably curbstomped every trainer you've fought. Your Rival? The Sprout Tower? Those are easy. If you picked Chikorita as your starter, its got a natural disadvantage against his Flying-types. Picked Totodile, nobody has an advantage. Picked Cyndaquil? I don't get all the hating on FF2. A real story, an awesome villain, a level-up system that, while flawed, was about twenty years ahead of its time, and on top of that you get to talk to beavers? What's not to like! FF3 is the worst for sure. Being unique is meaningless if it isn't good. The level up system was the main thing of the game, and it was heavily flawed. I don't care if the game was one hundred years ahead of its time if it isn't enjoyable then it's all for naught. The main issues I have with FF2 is... 1. The map was too vague. It was impossible to tell the difference between a section that had the beginner enemies, and a section that had enemies that would party wipe you on round one. Heck, even at the very start of the game you can walk all the way down and end up fighting a bomb that WILL kill you, and you're right in front of the castle you start off at. 2. The player was punished for playing the game. You saw a bunch of doors in a dungeon. In 99% of RPGs, these doors mean something. You can find treasure in the room or progress at least. In FFII? Almost all of them are empty rooms that have a 99% encounter rate. Not exactly fun. Not only does this stifle exploration, it makes the dungeons overall boring. Most of the rooms look exactly the same. I can barely tell the difference between one dungeon and the next. 3. The stats system. It may have been "ahead of its time" but it was still messed up. You mostly had to either be a magicless warrior or a frail caster with no room in between if you wanted a good character. Also, this may have just been me, but why is it so difficult to run away from even weak encounters? It's just annoying when it takes a long time to run from a goblin. 4. Lack of useful abilities. FFII had a lot of spells and weapons, but only a few of them mattered. Fist were better than any weapon until about the final dungeon with a few exceptions. Spells were mostly either pointless, or took forever to get useful(Level 7 Esuna I believe before it FINALLY cures petrification?). The worst case example is Ultima. You go into a mini storyline and a dungeon to get to it. It's "the most powerful magic" and you "need" it to defeat the Emperor. Except for the fact it starts at level 1 and you need to grind every other spell in the game before Ultima can actually be worth it. You can easily beat the game well before that happens.
