Dembele winning it before Mbappe is hillarious. I think the award in recent years has been more debated because there any any players that were clearly above the rest of the field in the way we have gotten used to. Dembele is an unusual winner in the sense that, watching France, he's not the one you watch out for, that's Mbappe, but it also wouldn't be right to give it to him in a year where he only won trophies that were due to the recent of his new club winning CL the year before. I think it's fair as well.
My own one issue with the award is the favoring of offensive players but it's always been like that. As an example, Pedri being 11th is ridiculous, as someone who watches a lot of Spanish football, his absense weakens Barca far more than Yamal and Raphinha who were second and fifth but they take the headlines. Rodri was a nice exception though.
