I beat Klonoa 2 just now! That was fun, I need to clean up the last couple trophies.

Like I was thinking before, my second October Nomination is Costume Quest 2.

I think that I am getting close to finishing the third jail in PS5, and while I'm having fun, it's also kind of a poor musou game, which makes me wonder how much of a role Koei Tecmo even had in its development. There's few battles where you face large amounts or endless enemies, and there's way too much stop-and-go here. I think the latter is the bigger issue as a more seamless experience would really mitigate the small and/or short battles.

Drawing in a week

I don't have too much to report on PS5. I think that I'm on the fourth or fifth jail. I've been mostly playing as Joker since I can change personas on the fly to take advantage of enemy weaknesses, but I've been branching out some, and I think that I prefer playing as Ann and Yusuke as a melee attacker.

Still making my way through Expedition 33.

I'm currently in the 2nd Axon's area .

My general strategy has been "burn, baby, burn" via Lune and Maelle. And also relying fairly heavily on the damage done from counterattacking with parrying.

I'll say, I feel like there are some battles that feel entirely too reliant on being able to do parry damage to succeed because I'm not doing enough damage and the enemy is getting too many turns. There was one battle in particular, against a Chromatic, where you HAD to parry counter to do any damage whatsoever until you could break him, which then gave you a chance for a "normal" turn for one round. Yes, the picto you get for winning that battle (+50% counterattack damage) makes sense for what you had to do, but holy shit do that battle get old.

Beat Klonoa 2 and Pastel Parade

Also beat Klonoa 1 before Klonoa 2 through Phantasy Reverie. 1 felt a bit off to me but 2 felt better and had a good flow to it with the boarding levels and a lean towards more puzzle elements. I did like the final boss of 1 more though.

Pastel Parade was nice and cute. Can get pretty tricky but the game doesn't demand you to do well to play through it.
Congrats to azuarc who beat me by 1 point!
Persona 5 Strikers beaten

also about done with act 2 in Clair Obscur, and made some progress in Indy. Only a little farther in Klonoa, beat the third boss.

Fucking hell, I'm STILL not finished with Act 2. The dungeon went on forever! That fight against the Clair Obscur was ROUGH! The fight against Renoir was easier...though he vanished Verso early on. I believe The Paintress is next, but that's for tomorrow.

Definitely playing Silksong (I'm surprised I held out this long.) and FFT. Might reread DDLC. I wasn't the biggest fan, but it's short enough that I guess I might as well.

I want to try TTYD, but not enough to buy it.

Might read DDLC to see what the fuss is about, though it's not super appealing to me conceptually

Will probably beat Silksong before October but maybe I'll replay it

Oh, FFT is a 40 hour game. That should have totally been an Oct-Dec nom

I remembered FFT being, like, 25 hours. Guess it's been too long since I've replayed it, and I didn't think to check how long to beat. Whoops.

I will definitely play FFT and TTYD
Into Act 3 now. That was a lot of story and exposition! Five days to finish this off. I think I should be good.

I'd say so.

Also, even though it's available on consoles, don't bother. You'll get the best experience by far playing it on PC.

Well, for what it's worth Silksong is apparently a 26 hour game and Paper Mario is 31 so there may not be an exact cutoff anyway.

You are looking at the top of three time figures when you should be looking at the middle one as a more realistic expectation and experience

I see Sean had the same idea

KCF has beaten Persona 5 Strikers

Battling was fun, and most of the cast was fun to play as, but my complaints of the poor Musou (is that capitalized?) implementation stuck through the entire experience.

Finally stared Expedition 33 (obviously not gonna finish for this) but I just can't dodge/parry. Like, I'm fighting Maelle at the dock at the very beginning of the game and I'm getting destroyed because I can't dodge properly. I can't even see the second part of her attack so I have no idea what the cue to dodge is.

Why do I always suck at games I want to play?
darkx
I didn't go back to the game after Crispy said this, but apparently there's an audio cue? It is definitely visually distracting and unnerving lol, but maybe take some punches and see if there's an obvious audio hint for when they are about to strike.
KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy
Yes, there is always an audio cue of some sort which is when you want to parry/dodge. And you always want to parry, fyi, because the counterattack damage from parrying every strike is crucial to success. Or at least it was for me. The camera and visual effects can really fuck with you, not to mention the many enemies who can have very funky timing on their attacks.

You'll get better at it, I promise. I was in the same boat. Once I got more in tune with the audio, it made everything a lot easier.

Honestly, a big part of the game is simply learning the timing of the various enemy attacks, making it feel more like some weird rhythm game than anything else. It kind of gets old after a while because you cannot switch off and "just press A"; you've always got to remain active and engaged in every fight.

So I fucked around today with a bunch of optional stuff now that I have full access to everything on the world map. I finished getting max level relationship with everyone , beat a bunch of Chromatic enemies, and get a nice haul of pictos and weapons. Based on looking at some guides, there's still A LOT of stuff I could do but...I'm kind of ready to be done. My mains are at level 66 and my backups are 59, which should be good enough to finish the game.

Clair Obscur beated!

Yeah, that last area was a joke if you do some of the "side" content in Act 3. I chose the Verso ending because that was the obvious "right" ending.

Overall, it was an enjoyable game. Interesting world and characters, good amount of variety to the locations and the way the characters played. I just think I got a bit bored by needing to parry everything because that was the easiest way to win (and in some cases practically the only way to do so). I can understand why it's some people's GotY (especially here...) but Bananza and The Dark Ages are definitely above it so far for me from the few 2025 releases that I've played.
