(another game I played a lot that would have been funner with a controller (probably meant for a joystick but I only had keyboard) is Stellar 7)

(a reverse example might be Descent. I do play that entirely with keyboard, not even mouse. main limitations are the simultaneous key-press issue and in not being able to aim sensitively. not a platformer though.)

I'm just saying there's nothing intrinsic about the keyboard that makes it inferior to controllers for platformers. You can learn to play SMW with a keyboard and be just as good at it as with a controller. Lots of people grew up playing and beating Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, etc with a keyboard via emulation.
a standard keyboard does have simultaneous key-press limitations. otherwise I would still disagree but it's largely subjective. if you say a keyboard is just as good for you as a controller I can't tell you it isn't. but for me, having grown up with both at the same time, I would say a controller is undoubtedly better.

I in fact specifically did not play much of the PC platformers at least partly because it's not fun playing them with a keyboard, and I say that as a more or less life-long PC gamer. Even having beaten for example Thexder 2: Firehawk with just keyboard, that whole experience would have been vastly improved with a working controller. (well, probably. it feels like it would have been better but who knows. it's tricky to compare because the games are different. the PC platformers are worse games with IMO worse controls. but it's hard to pull apart the game itself from the different controls. I also have not played many games on emulators for partly similar reasons: it's just not as fun as playing it on a TV and with a controller.)

You did have SNES style controllers like the Gravis Gamepad.
I did have one of those eventually. but I think not at the same time that I was playing Commander Keen, etc. I don't think I ended up using it successfully on any game it was more of a novelty for me.

And I don't think keyboards are intrinsically worse for platformers than controllers. I think it's just a preference thing. I prefer a controller but if I had grown up playing a lot more platformers on keyboard, maybe that would be different.
I would say they are. The games mentioned were all in competition with SMB1-3 and at some point SMW so the overall experience was just not as great as what you had with Nintendo, both in game design and controls.

this is just my experience. for sure there are those people that had great joysticks and played the heck out of the PC platform games, but I think the quality of the experience is not going to be anywhere near the best NES/SNES games.

not really. they didn't work all that great because most PCs of the time had keyboards not controllers. (there were joystick ports etc. but I don't think they were used much and you didn't have something like an SNES controller. and configuring them was terrible too IIRC.)

the ones I know of are mostly already mentioned: Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Jazz Jackrabbit are the main ones if I'm not forgetting something.

there were probably lots of other crappier shareware ones but I can't think of any offhand. (I think of Paganitzu and Boppin but those are puzzle games.)

k thanks. just didn't see the connection to your situation.

it does make sense for that subset of people that have a need/desire for an especially decent PC without needing to be a computer person themselves.

also I do know the stress of having your own PC die. it's like having to do surgery on yourself sort of, where you have to apply your skills while crippled.

yes, it skips having to assemble it; I get those scenarios. but your motivation for the thread "This is why people buy consoles/prebuilts". the problem that you had here, it being a pre-built would not have changed this situation, right? unless it's very new and would have been under warranty?

except for the warranty you cannot escape the fact that the computer can fail and you can choose to repair it yourself or take it somewhere to be repaired. that's always the case. (except with a console you may actually lose the ability to repair it yourself.)
This day is gone. We can't relive it. It's gone forever.

it sounds like you get a warranty with a pre-built, but otherwise it's still just a PC and still requires the same repair that any PC would get. or what would a pre-built have changed? is it a nearly new PC? mine is 12 years old at this point so warranties are long long gone.

for motorsport... isn't motorsport like extremely interesting IF you could just watch it from the racer's viewpoint? but when you actually watch it all you see is random shots of random cars with no sense of who is where when and how anyone in particular's race is going. if you could actually watch a guy's race, it would be a lot more interesting to watch.

you can see some racing like this on youtube (both sim and real) and it's so much more interesting than what you could see from "real" racing.

now that I think of it, what does buying a "prebuilt" do that avoids these problems? you avoid putting it together at first but it can still fail and need repair. prebuilt or not, the components can fail, require diagnosing, and replacing.

a big difference is whether it's a modular system (PC) or not (console, though I think they're a tiny bit more modular these days). but prebuilt PCs are still PCs (and still modular). (right?)

Because
I am still using the same PSU from like 16 years ago in mine.
And a lot of my friends have similar experiences. One of my friends is on his 4th build and is still using the same PSU from early 2000's. Like, seriously, those things never fail.

my previous PC had a PS fail, this PC had one fail, my current work PC had one fail, I just had one fail the other week, and I find it's a very common, maybe the most common, reason for a PC to fail. definitely one of the more common repair jobs I have to do. I mean there's a reason a power-supply tester is a thing.

actually just had a ~54V adapter fail yesterday which is almost the same thing. that one was interesting because when you plugged it in it would read like 53.6V, but would tick down very steadily about 0.1V per second almost like a clock. 52.0V, 51.9V, 51.8V, 51.7V down and down all the way to 13.2V, 13.1V, 13.0V, and on. but unplug it and plug it back in, and it's right back at 53.7V and counting down.

you had a single connection for the front panel?
it's usually in most cases just 4-6 individual pins.
what the fuck case was it
I don't know what you mean by single connection. there were four larger connectors total, one of which was front panel (and 2 USB and something else I can't recall), and two smaller 2-pin connectors (one chassis intrusion, one unknown, could probably look it up, 2-pin red + black; maybe fan or LED? not sure.).

the case front-panel was I think 14-pin (2x7 but some blocked), but the motherboard had something like 20-pins (2x10). I knew the motherboard model and could look up its pinouts, but not the case. it worked with the 14-pin connector on the left (or bottom) side of the 20-pins but not entirely sure why. I was just glad it worked. power button turns it on and HD light blinks. if I had more time I could do more research and maybe figure it out better.

(this is something like putting an Acer motherboard into an HP case or vice-versa which is possibly why it didn't match. or if the case connectors are standard I'm not familiar with them. the other connectors for USB and whatever the other one was were an exact match to the motherboard but not the front-panel one. if I had the case manual if there is one it would probably be more clear.)

Ogre Battle? get bad ending anyway.

games like SMB where you have a timer you can play skillfully but still die from the timer

there's a game where that was basically how the story went

4x games with alternative win-conditions

really what would qualify here is any game with alternative lose conditions. that's what the timer is and that's what alternative win conditions are if the AI can reach them too.

PSU is usually the last thing to die on a computer.
why would you say this? I think the only thing that fails more than power supplies are hard disk drives. although from my experience I think they might actually fail more than HDDs.

next would be motherboards. after that almost nothing. maybe RAM very very rarely. CPU basically never. optical drives basically never (probably don't get used though not sure about heavy use). video cards almost never. (I guess overclocking could change CPU and GPU rates; I don't do tons of overclocking.)

but power supply... if the computer lasts long enough I know I will have to replace it eventually. same as HDD. (like 3/4 on my own PCs and one of the most common failures on other people's PCs. I just changed one the other week which was the above story (had working full size PS but failed SFF one so had to move motherboard to a larger case.))

a tip that I never do myself and always regret is to take a picture (or many) of the initial setup so that you don't forget anything.

I moved a motherboard from a SFF case to a mid-tower that it did not belong in and everything went pretty smooth except for connecting the case to the motherboard. the front-panel connector in particular is important if you want to turn it on with the power switch. but the Acer motherboard and old case had different sized front-panel connectors from the new case (the new connector was 3-pins less wide IIRC). I tried putting it on all the way to the right and that did nothing, but it did turn on with it on all the way to the left. not sure if the speakers work though since I think they are mostly on the pins that didn't get connected. there is also a 2-pin red cable that I skipped and have no idea where it would go.

it's dark blue, or very dark blue. I have a black car and it's quite different than that. white and black vehicles are insanely common these days so it should be easy enough to find a comparison. just google "black car" and you see the difference immediately. an actually black car is more like the shade of coal or has an ashen quality, not sure how to say it.

comparing against the tires, which should be perfectly black, there's not a ton of difference, but there is some difference. and then you have a nearby blue car reflecting off it, as well as the sky... but if you compare it to an actually black car it sure seems different.

I would say that in your examples you are merging the concepts, which is valid, but not the same as unifying the categories. if I say "gravy", generally that will not include spaghetti sauce, and vice-versa. if I make something that has properties of both, you can say it's technically both, but the categories themselves don't merge. you can't really define one of these in terms of the other ("a spaghetti sauce is a gravy that... or a gravy is a spaghetti sauce that..."). they are both sauces. and you could have a sauce that has both qualities. but one category does not come from the other, they are sibling categories descended from a more general concept.

(not finding many sources for meatless gravy. a gravy without meat is really just something emulating gravy. generally "real" gravy involves meat juices; no-meat gravies are exceptions.)

pedantry time: you're moving laterally across a conceptual hierarchy. cats are not dogs, they are both mammal pets. apples are not oranges, they are both round fruits. spaghetti sauce is not gravy, they are both sauces.

at best you could maybe combine them, since they are not mutually exclusive. "spaghetti sauce" surprisingly means "sauce intended to be put on spaghetti" and "gravy" means something like "thickened sauce with meat flavor/based on meat juice". those have no overlap besides 'sauce' but have no contradiction either, so "thickened sauce based on meat juice intended to be put on spaghetti" is a valid concept. but neither "spaghetti sauce" nor "gravy" captures that idea.
